The nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway is a well-known eukaryotic surveillance mechanism that eliminates aberrant mRNAs that contain a premature termination codon (PTC). The UP-Frameshift (UPF) proteins, UPF1, UPF2, and UPF3, are essential for normal NMD function. Several NMD substrates have been identified, but detailed information on NMD substrates is lacking.
