Project description:A nickel-catalyzed deaminative cyanation of Katritzky pyridinium salts has been developed. When it is coupled with formation of the pyridinium salt from primary amines, this method enables alkyl amines to be converted to alkyl nitriles. A less toxic cyanide reagent, Zn(CN)2, is utilized, and diverse functional groups and heterocycles are tolerated. The method also enables a one-carbon homologation of alkyl amines via reduction of the nitrile products, in addition to many other potential transformations of the versatile nitrile group.

Homologation of Electron-Rich Benzyl Bromide Derivatives via Diazo C-C Bond Insertion.

Project description:The ability to manipulate C-C bonds for selective chemical transformations is challenging and represents a growing area of research. Here, we report a formal insertion of diazo compounds into the "unactivated" C-C bond of benzyl bromide derivatives catalyzed by a simple Lewis acid. The homologation reaction proceeds via the intermediacy of a phenonium ion, and the products contain benzylic quaternary centers and an alkyl bromide amenable to further derivatization. Computational analysis provides critical insight into the reaction mechanism, in particular the key selectivity-determining step.

Synthesis of alkynyl ethers and low-temperature sigmatropic rearrangement of allyl and benzyl alkynyl ethers.

Project description:Alpha-alkoxy ketones 3 can be transformed into 1-alkynyl ethers 5 by a two-step procedure involving formation of the enol triflate or phosphate and base-induced elimination. Performing the same reaction sequence with allylic alcohols (R2OH, R2 = allyl) furnishes instead gamma,delta-unsaturated carboxylic acid derivatives 6, derived from [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of the intermediate allyl alkynyl ethers at -78 degrees C and trapping of the subsequently formed ketene with nucleophiles (Nu-H). Benzyl alkynyl ether 5 (R2 = benzyl) rearranges to indanone 7 upon heating to 60 degrees C.

Phosphonic acid mediated practical dehalogenation and benzylation with benzyl halides.

Project description:For the first time, by using H3PO3/I2 system, various benzyl chlorides, bromides and iodides were dehalogenated successfully. In the presence of H3PO3, benzyl halides underwent electrophilic substitution reactions with electron-rich arenes, leading to a broad range of diarylmethanes in good yields. These transformations feature green, cheap reducing reagents and metal-free conditions. A possible mechanism was proposed.

Homologation and functionalization of carbon monoxide by a recyclable uranium complex.

Project description:Carbon monoxide (CO) is in principle an excellent resource from which to produce industrial hydrocarbon feedstocks as alternatives to crude oil; however, CO has proven remarkably resistant to selective homologation, and the few complexes that can effect this transformation cannot be recycled because liberation of the homologated product destroys the complexes or they are substitutionally inert. Here, we show that under mild conditions a simple triamidoamine uranium(III) complex can reductively homologate CO and be recycled for reuse. Following treatment with organosilyl halides, bis(organosiloxy)acetylenes, which readily convert to furanones, are produced, and this was confirmed by the use of isotopically (13)C-labeled CO. The precursor to the triamido uranium(III) complex is formed concomitantly. These findings establish that, under appropriate conditions, uranium(III) can mediate a complete synthetic cycle for the homologation of CO to higher derivatives. This work may prove useful in spurring wider efforts in CO homologation, and the simplicity of this system suggests that catalytic CO functionalization may soon be within reach.

Selective reduction and homologation of carbon monoxide by organometallic iron complexes.

Project description:Carbon monoxide is a key C1 feedstock for the industrial production of hydrocarbons, where it is used to make millions of tonnes of chemicals, fuels, and solvents per annum. Many transition metal complexes can coordinate CO, but the formation of new C-C bonds in well-defined compounds from the scission and subsequent coupling of two or more CO moieties at a transition metal centre remains a challenge. Herein, we report the use of low-coordinate iron(II) complexes for the selective scission and homologation of CO affording unusual squaraines and iron carboxylates at ambient temperature and pressure. A modification of the ligand framework allows for the isolation and structural characterisation of a proposed metallacyclic Fe(II) carbene intermediate. These results indicate that, with the appropriate choice of supporting ligands, it is possible to cleave and homologate carbon monoxide under mild conditions using an abundant and environmentally benign low-coordinate, first row transition metal.

Project description:Cyclopropanations of benzene rings by oxidatively generated ?-oxo gold carbenes are for the first time demonstrated in a Buchner reaction, in which readily available propargyl benzyl ethers are converted in one-pot to tetrahydropyranone-fused cycloheptatrienes via sequential oxidative gold catalysis and base-promoted isomerization. Additional examples of arene cyclopropanations without fragmentation of the cyclopropane ring are also realized.
