Calreticulin is an essential, multifunctional Ca(2+)-binding protein that participates in the regulation of intracellular Ca(2+) homeostasis, cell adhesion, and chaperoning. Calreticulin is abundantly expressed and regulated by androgens in prostate epithelial cells.
