Lithium phenolates solvated by tetrahydrofuran and 1,2-dimethoxyethane: structure determination using the method of continuous variation.

ABSTRACT: The method of continuous variation in conjunction with (6)Li NMR spectroscopy was used to characterize lithium phenolates solvated by tetrahydrofuran and 1,2-dimethoxyethane. The strategy relies on the formation of ensembles of homo- and heteroaggregated phenolates. The symmetries and concentration dependencies of the heteroaggregates attest to the aggregation numbers of the homoaggregates. The structurally diverse phenols afford substrate- and solvent-dependent combinations of lithium phenolate monomers, dimers, trimers, tetramers, and pentamers. We discuss the refinement of protocols for characterizing O-lithiated species. Computational studies examine further the substituent and solvent dependencies of aggregation.

Project description:The method of continuous variation (MCV) was used in conjunction with (6)Li NMR spectroscopy to characterize four lithium phenolates solvated by a range of solvents, including N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine, Et2O, pyridine, protic amines, alcohols, and highly dipolar aprotic solvents. Dimers, trimers, and tetramers were observed, depending on the precise lithium phenolate-solvent combinations. Competition experiments (solvent swaps) provide insights into the relative propensities toward mixed solvation.

Lithium ions solvated in helium.

Project description:We report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of Li+ ions solvated by up to 50 He atoms. The experiments show clear enhanced abundances associated with HenLi+ clusters where n = 2, 6, 8, and 14. We find that classical methods, e.g. basin-hopping (BH), give results that qualitatively agree with quantum mechanical methods such as path integral Monte Carlo, diffusion Monte Carlo and quantum free energy, regarding both energies and the solvation structures that are formed. The theory identifies particularly stable structures for n = 4, 6 and 8 which line up with some of the most abundant features in the experiments.

Electrochemical behavior and electrodeposition of gallium in 1,2-dimethoxyethane-based electrolytes.

Project description:The electrochemical behavior and electrodeposition of gallium was studied in a non-aqueous electrolyte comprising of gallium(iii) chloride and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME). Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) measurements indicate that reduction of gallium(iii) is a two-step process: first from gallium(iii) to gallium(i), and then from gallium(i) to gallium(0). The morphology and elemental composition of the electrodeposited layer were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Metallic gallium was deposited as spheres with diameters of several hundred nanometers that were stacked on top of each other. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that each gallium sphere was covered by a thin gallium oxide shell. Electrochemical experiments indicated that these oxide layers are electrically conductive, as gallium can be electrodeposited and partially stripped on or from the layer of spheres below. This was further evidenced by simultaneous electrodeposition of gallium and indium, using indium as a tracer. Electrodeposition of gallium from an O2-containing electrolyte resulted in spheres with smaller diameters. This was due to the formation thicker oxide shells, through which diffusion of gallium atoms that were electrodeposited on the surface, was slower. The concentration of gallium adatoms on top of the gallium spheres to form a new sphere therefore reaches the critical concentration for nucleating a new gallium sphere sooner, leading to smaller spheres.

Azaaldol condensation of a lithium enolate solvated by N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine: dimer-based 1,2-addition to imines.

Project description:The lithium enolate of tert-amylacetate solvated by N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) is shown to be a doubly chelated dimer. Adding the dimeric enolate to 4-fluorobenzaldehyde-N-phenylimine affords an N-lithiated β-amino ester shown to be monomeric using (6)Li and (15)N NMR spectroscopies. Rate studies using (19)F NMR spectroscopy reveal reaction orders consistent with a transition structure of stoichiometry [(ROLi)2(TMEDA)2(imine)](‡). Density functional theory computations explore several possible dimer-based transition structures with monodentate and bidentate coordination of TMEDA. Supporting rate studies using trans-N,N,N',N'-1,2-tetramethylcyclohexanediamine showing analogous rates and rate law suggest that TMEDA is fully chelated.

An Experimental Validated Computational Method for pKa Determination of Substituted 1,2-Dihydroxybenzenes.

Project description:1,2-dihydroxybenzenes (DHBs) are organic compounds which are widely studied as they are applied to advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). These compounds are also related to the development of oxidative stress, wood biodegradation, and neuronal disease in humans. DHBs are metal ligands with pro-oxidant and antioxidant properties. These activities are related to their chelation properties and a consequence of the deprotonation of their hydroxyl groups. In literature, there are several pKa values for the hydroxyl groups of DHBs. These values vary depending on the experimental conditions or the algorithm used for calculation. In this work, an experimentally validated computational method was implemented in aqueous solution for pKa determination of 24 DHBs. The deprotonation order of the hydroxyl groups in DHB was determined observing a selective deprotonation, which depended on the ability of the substituent to donate or withdraw electron density over the ring.

Morphology of lithium halides in tetrahydrofuran from molecular dynamics with machine learning potentials.

Project description:The preferred structures of lithium halides (LiX, with X = Cl, Br, I) in organic solvents have been the subject of a wide scientific debate, and a large variety of forms has been isolated and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The identified molecular scaffolds for LiX are diverse, often built on (LiX) n rings with a prevalence of rhomboidal arrangements and an appropriate number of solvent or Lewis base molecules coordinating the lithium ions. Much less is known about the structures of LiX in solution, limiting the understanding of the synergistic role of LiX in reactions with various organometallic complexes, as prominently represented by the turbo Grignard reaction. Here, we trained a machine learning potential on ab initio data to explore the complex conformational landscape for systems comprising four LiX moieties in tetrahydrofuran (THF). For all the considered halogens a large number of scaffolds were found at thermally accessible free energy values, indicating that LiX in solution are a diverse ensemble constituted of (LiX) n moieties of various sizes, completed by the appropriate number of coordinating THF. LiCl shows a preference for compact, pseudo-cubane Li4Cl4(THF)4 structures, coexisting with open rings. At concentrations close to the solubility limit, LiCl forms hexagonal structures, in analogy with literature observations on pre-nucleating NaCl. LiBr tends to favour less compact, more solvated aggregates. LiI significantly differs from the two other cases, producing highly solvated, monomeric, dimeric, or linear structures. This study provides a comprehensive view of LiX in organic solvent, revealing dynamical polymorphism that is not easily observable experimentally.

Structures of beta-amino ester enolates: new strategies using the method of continuous variation.

Project description:The solution structures of four enolates derived from beta-amino esters are investigated using (6)Li NMR spectroscopy in conjunction with the method of continuous variation (method of Job). Ensembles of homo- and heteroaggregated enolates are generated by mixing enantiomers of a single enolate (R/S mixtures), opposite antipodes of two different enolates (R/S' mixtures), and the same antipodes of two different enolates (R/R' mixtures). The numbers of observable aggregates and their dependence on the mole fraction of the two enolates confirm the hexamer assignments. Inherent symmetries observable in the (6)Li NMR spectra show the stereochemistry of chelation about the hexagonal drum.

Weakly solvated EC-free linear alkyl carbonate electrolytes for Ni-rich cathode in rechargeable lithium battery.

Project description:Ethylene carbonate (EC) in the electrolyte is not stable in cells operated at high voltage (≥4.4V) or with Li metal anode, which greatly reduce the energy density and lifetime of the rechargeable lithium battery. Herein, an EC-free linear alkyl carbonate-based electrolyte is developed, which enables the high-voltage (≥4.4V) and low-temperature (-30°C) application of Ni-rich cathode (LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2, NCM811). The EC-free system, consisting of LiPF6 and LiNO3 in ternary linear alkyl carbonates, possesses low viscosity, weakly solvated structure, and high interfacial stability with both the Ni-rich cathode and the Li metal anode to avoid continuous electrode/electrolyte side reactions and metal dissolution from the cathode. As a result, the Li||NCM811 cell delivers remarkable capacity retention of 93 ± 0.5% at the voltage of 4.4V and 88 ± 0.6% at 4.5V over 100 cycles. This study provides very encouraging perspective to develop EC-free carbonate-based electrolyte for high-voltage and low-temperature application in high-energy-density rechargeable lithium batteries.

Solution structures of lithium enolates, phenolates, carboxylates, and alkoxides in the presence of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine: a prevalence of cyclic dimers.

Project description:The method of continuous variation was used to characterize lithium enolates, phenolates, carboxylates, and alkoxides solvated by N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA). The method relies on characterizing an ensemble of homo- and heteroaggregates using (6)Li NMR spectroscopy. A combination of aggregate counts and symmetries, nearly statistical distributions, and quantitative parametric fits revealed that cyclic dimers are the dominant forms. Nonstatistical distributions favoring heteroaggregated dimers were observed when hindered enolates and carboxylates were mixed with unhindered enolates. Hindered (tertiary) alkoxides form higher aggregates (possibly hexamers), whereas hindered lithium phenolates appear to form TMEDA-solvated monomers.
