Several pathogenic bacteria, including Listeria monocytogenes, use an F-actin motility process to spread between mammalian cells. Actin 'comet tails' propel Listeria through the cytoplasm, resulting in bacteria-containing membrane protrusions that are internalized by neighbouring cells.
