Do animals bite more during a full moon? Retrospective observational analysis.

ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE:To test the hypothesis that the incidence of animal bites increases at the time of a full moon. DESIGN:Retrospective observational analysis. SETTING:Accident and emergency department at a general hospital in an English city. SUBJECTS:1621 consecutive patients, irrespective of age and sex. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Number of patients who attended an accident and emergency department during 1997 to 1999 after being bitten by an animal. The number of bites in each day was compared with the lunar phase in each month. RESULTS:The incidence of animal bites rose significantly at the time of a full moon. With the period of the full moon as the reference period, the incidence rate ratio of the bites for all other periods of the lunar cycle was significantly lower (P <0.001). CONCLUSIONS:The full moon is associated with a significant increase in animal bites to humans.

Full Moon and Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest in Japan　- Population-Based, Double-Controlled Case Series Analysis.

Project description:Background: It is commonly believed that a full moon affects human behavior or the occurrence and outcome of various diseases; thus, the occurrence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) might increase during full moon nights. Methods and Results: This nationwide, population-based observational study consecutively enrolled OHCA patients in Japan with attempted resuscitation between 2005 and 2016. The primary outcome measure was the occurrence of OHCA. Based on the double-control method, assuming Poisson sampling, we evaluated the average number of OHCA events that occurred on full moon nights compared with that which occurred on control nights, which included events that occurred on the same calendar days 1 week before and after the full moon nights. A total of 29,552 OHCA that occurred on 148 full moon nights and 58,707 OHCA that occurred on 296 control nights were eligible for analysis. The occurrence of OHCA did not differ between full moon and control nights (199.7 vs. 198.3 per night; relative risk [RR], 1.007; 95% CI: 0.993-1.021). On subgroup analysis, compared with control nights, the RR of OHCA occurrence were 1.013 (95% CI: 0.994-1.032, P=0.166) and 0.998 (95% CI: 0.977-1.020, P=0.866) for cardiac and non-cardiac origins, respectively. Conclusions: In this population, there was no significant difference in OHCA occurrence between full moon and control nights.

Fear of darkness, the full moon and the nocturnal ecology of African lions.

Project description:Nocturnal carnivores are widely believed to have played an important role in human evolution, driving the need for night-time shelter, the control of fire and our innate fear of darkness. However, no empirical data are available on the effects of darkness on the risks of predation in humans. We performed an extensive analysis of predatory behavior across the lunar cycle on the largest dataset of lion attacks ever assembled and found that African lions are as sensitive to moonlight when hunting humans as when hunting herbivores and that lions are most dangerous to humans when the moon is faint or below the horizon. At night, people are most active between dusk and 10:00 pm, thus most lion attacks occur in the first weeks following the full moon (when the moon rises at least an hour after sunset). Consequently, the full moon is a reliable indicator of impending danger, perhaps helping to explain why the full moon has been the subject of so many myths and misconceptions.

Xenon consumption during general surgery: a retrospective observational study.

Project description:High costs still limits the widespread use of xenon in the clinical practice. Therefore, we evaluated xenon consumption of different delivery modes during general surgery.A total of 48 patients that underwent general surgery with balanced xenon anaesthesia were retrospectively analysed according to the mode of xenon delivery during maintenance phase (ECO mode, AUTO mode or MANUAL mode).Xenon consumption was highest during the wash-in phase (9.4?±?2.1l) and further decreased throughout maintenance of anaesthesia. Comparison of different xenon delivery modes revealed significant reduced xenon consumption during ECO mode (18.5?±?3.7L (ECO) vs. 24.7?±?11.5L (AUTO) vs. 29.6?±?14.3L (MANUAL); p?=?0.033). No differences could be detected with regard to anaesthetic depth, oxygenation or performance of anaesthesia.The closed-circuit respirator Felix Dual offers effective reduction of xenon consumption during general surgery when ECO mode is used.

Environmental factors explain spawning day deviation from full moon in the scleractinian coral Acropora.

Project description:Broadcast-spawning scleractinian corals annually release their gametes with high levels of synchrony, both within and among species. However, the timing of spawning can vary inter-annually. In particular, the night of spawning relative to the full moon phase can vary considerably among years at some locations. Although multiple environmental factors can affect the night of spawning, their effects have not been quantitatively assessed at the multi-regional level. In this study, we analysed environmental factors that are potentially correlated with spawning day deviation, in relation to the full moon phase, in Acropora corals inhabiting seven reefs in Australia and Japan. We accordingly found that sea surface temperature and wind speed within one to two months prior to the full moon of the spawning month were strongly correlated with spawning day deviations. In addition, solar flux had a weak effect on the night of spawning. These findings indicate that Acropora have the capacity to adjust their development and physiology in response to environmental factors for fine-tuning the timing of synchronous spawning, thereby maximizing reproductive success and post-fertilization survival.

Validation of a Deep Learning System for the Full Automation of Bite and Meal Duration Analysis of Experimental Meal Videos.

Project description:Eating behavior can have an important effect on, and be correlated with, obesity and eating disorders. Eating behavior is usually estimated through self-reporting measures, despite their limitations in reliability, based on ease of collection and analysis. A better and widely used alternative is the objective analysis of eating during meals based on human annotations of in-meal behavioral events (e.g., bites). However, this methodology is time-consuming and often affected by human error, limiting its scalability and cost-effectiveness for large-scale research. To remedy the latter, a novel "Rapid Automatic Bite Detection" (RABiD) algorithm that extracts and processes skeletal features from videos was trained in a video meal dataset (59 individuals; 85 meals; three different foods) to automatically measure meal duration and bites. In these settings, RABiD achieved near perfect agreement between algorithmic and human annotations (Cohen's kappa ? = 0.894; F1-score: 0.948). Moreover, RABiD was used to analyze an independent eating behavior experiment (18 female participants; 45 meals; three different foods) and results showed excellent correlation between algorithmic and human annotations. The analyses revealed that, despite the changes in food (hash vs. meatballs), the total meal duration remained the same, while the number of bites were significantly reduced. Finally, a descriptive meal-progress analysis revealed that different types of food affect bite frequency, although overall bite patterns remain similar (the outcomes were the same for RABiD and manual). Subjects took bites more frequently at the beginning and the end of meals but were slower in-between. On a methodological level, RABiD offers a valid, fully automatic alternative to human meal-video annotations for the experimental analysis of human eating behavior, at a fraction of the cost and the required time, without any loss of information and data fidelity.

Extensive volatile loss during formation and differentiation of the Moon.

Project description:Low estimated lunar volatile contents, compared with Earth, are a fundamental observation for Earth-Moon system formation and lunar evolution. Here we present zinc isotope and abundance data for lunar crustal rocks to constrain the abundance of volatiles during the final stages of lunar differentiation. We find that ferroan anorthosites are isotopically heterogeneous, with some samples exhibiting high ?(66)Zn, along with alkali and magnesian suite samples. Since the plutonic samples were formed in the lunar crust, they were not subjected to degassing into vacuum. Instead, their compositions are consistent with enrichment of the silicate portions of the Moon in the heavier Zn isotopes. Because of the difference in ?(66)Zn between bulk silicate Earth and lunar basalts and crustal rocks, the volatile loss likely occurred in two stages: during the proto-lunar disk stage, where a fraction of lunar volatiles accreted onto Earth, and from degassing of a differentiating lunar magma ocean, implying the possibility of isolated, volatile-rich regions in the Moon's interior.

Surgical Treatment of Pediatric Dog-bite Wounds: A 5-year Retrospective Review.

Project description:IntroductionDog bites are a significant health concern in the pediatric population. Few studies published to date have stratified the injuries caused by dog bites based on surgical severity to elucidate the contributing risk factors.MethodsWe used an electronic hospital database to identify all patients ≤17 years of age treated for dog bites from 2013-2018. Data related to patient demographics, injury type, intervention, dog breed, and payer source were collected. We extracted socioeconomic data from the American Community Survey. Data related to dog breed was obtained from public records on dog licenses. We calculated descriptive statistics as well as relative risk of dog bite by breed.ResultsOf 1,252 injuries identified in 967 pediatric patients, 17.1% required consultation with a surgical specialist for repair. Bites affecting the head/neck region were most common (61.7%) and most likely to require operating room intervention (P = 0.002). The relative risk of a patient being bitten in a low-income area was 2.24, compared with 0.46 in a high-income area. Among cases where the breed of dog responsible for the bite was known, the dog breed most commonly associated with severe bites was the pit bull (relative risk vs German shepherd 8.53, relative risk vs unknown, 3.28).ConclusionThe majority of injuries did not require repair and were sufficiently handled by an emergency physician. Repair by a surgical specialist was required <20% of the time, usually for bites affecting the head/neck region. Disparities in the frequency and characteristics of dog bites across socioeconomic levels and dog breeds suggest that public education efforts may decrease the incidence of pediatric dog bites.

Safety of bedside surgical tracheostomy during COVID-19 pandemic: A retrospective observational study.

Project description:Data regarding safety of bedside surgical tracheostomy in novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) mechanically ventilated patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) are lacking. We performed this study to assess the safety of bedside surgical tracheostomy in COVID-19 patients admitted to ICU. This retrospective, single-center, cohort observational study (conducted between February, 23 and April, 30, 2020) was performed in our 45-bed dedicated COVID-19 ICU. Inclusion criteria were: a) age over 18 years; b) confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 infection (with nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swab); c) invasive mechanical ventilation and d) clinical indication for tracheostomy. The objectives of this study were to describe: 1) perioperative complications, 2) perioperative alterations in respiratory gas exchange and 3) occurrence of COVID-19 infection among health-care providers involved into the procedure. A total of 125 COVID-19 patients were admitted to the ICU during the study period. Of those, 66 (53%) underwent tracheostomy. Tracheostomy was performed after a mean of 6.1 (± 2.1) days since ICU admission. Most of tracheostomies (47/66, 71%) were performed by intensivists and the mean time of the procedure was 22 (± 4.4) minutes. No intraprocedural complications was reported. Stoma infection and bleeding were reported in 2 patients and 7 patients, respectively, in the post-procedure period, without significant clinical consequences. The mean PaO2 / FiO2 was significantly lower at the end of tracheostomy (117.6 ± 35.4) then at the beginning (133.4 ± 39.2) or 24 hours before (135.8 ± 51.3) the procedure. However, PaO2/FiO2 progressively increased at 24 hours after tracheostomy (142 ± 50.7). None of the members involved in the tracheotomy procedures developed COVID-19 infection. Bedside surgical tracheostomy appears to be feasible and safe, both for patients and for health care workers, during COVID-19 pandemic in an experienced center.

Project description:The aim of this study was to identify the specific molecular biological features predicting the therapeutic outcomes of three bDMARDs, infliximab (IFX), tocilizumab (TCZ), and abatacept (ABT) by studying blood gene expression signature of patients prior to biologic treatment in a unified test platform. GSEA analyses showed that inflammasome genes were significantly upregulated in IFXâs NON-REM compared with its REM. In TCZâs REM, B cell-specifically expressed genes were upregulated. RNA elongation, apoptosis-related, and NK cell-specifically expressed genes were upregulated in ABTâs NON-REM. RA patients who responded inadequately to methotrexate and were later commenced with any one of IFX (n=140), TCZ (n=38), and ABT (n=31) as their first biologic between May 2007 and November 2011 were enrolled. Whole blood gene expression data were obtained prior to their biologic administration. They were defined as remission and non-remission groups, according to CDAI at 6 months of biologic therapy.
