The beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) is an orphan transmembrane receptor whose physiological role is largely unknown. APP is cleaved by proteases generating amyloid-beta (Abeta) peptide, the main component of the amyloid plaques that are associated with Alzheimer's disease.
