In apoptosis, mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP) triggers caspase-dependent death. However, cells undergo clonogenic death even if caspases are blocked. One proposed mechanism involved the release of cytotoxic proteins (e.g., AIF and endoG) from mitochondria.
