Metallo-beta-lactamases (MbetaLs) constitute an increasingly serious clinical threat by giving rise to beta-lactam antibiotic resistance. They accommodate in their catalytic pocket one or two zinc ions, which are responsible for the hydrolysis of beta-lactams.
