First report of Gordonibacter pamelaeae bacteremia.

ABSTRACT: We report the first case of Gordonibacter pamelaeae bacteremia, identified by phenotypic tests and 16S rRNA sequencing in a patient with disseminated rectosigmoid carcinoma and responsive to amoxicillin-clavulanate. The bacterium was a nonsporulating, anaerobic, gram-positive, nonmotile, coccobacillus that was catalase, arginine dihydrolase, and arginine acrylamidase positive. The gastrointestinal tract is probably its reservoir.

Project description:We report the first case of spontaneous intrapartum Atopobium vaginae bacteremia identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The bacterium was misidentified by RapID ANA II, API Rapid ID 32A, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The likely source of bacteremia was the female genital tract. In invasive infections caused by A. vaginae, ?-lactams and clindamycin are the antibiotics of choice, as most strains are resistant to metronidazole.

We report the first case of human bacteremia with Malacobacter (previously Arcobacter) mytili acquired after exposure to Maryland crab. First report of Mycobacterium canariasense catheter-related bacteremia in the Americas.

Project description:Mycobacterium canariasense is a recently described late-pigmenting, rapidly growing mycobacterium linked to bacteremia in patients with underlying malignant diseases. We report a case of M. canariasense infection in a patient from Massachusetts with underlying diffuse B cell lymphoma, which was identified both by multilocus sequence typing and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). To our knowledge, this is the first description after its original identification in Spain and the first report of this opportunistic pathogen in the Americas.

First case report of catheter-related bacteremia due to "Mycobacterium lacticola".

Project description:This is the first report of infection caused by "Mycobacterium lacticola," a rapidly growing, scotochromogenic mycobacterium that was isolated from the blood of an immunosuppressed child. The organism was identified by sequence analysis of >1,400 bp of the 16S rRNA gene. The clinical relevance of this isolate, coupled with its unique 16S rRNA gene sequence, should prompt further investigation to establish this organism as a valid mycobacterial species.

Vogesella perlucida-induced bacteremia in an advanced-age patient: first case report.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Vogesella species are common aquatic, Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria, originally described in 1997. Vogesella perlucida was first isolated from spring water in 2008. Furthermore, bacterial pathogenicity of Vogesella perlucida has never been reported. Here, we report the first case of rare Vogesella perlucida-induced bacteremia in an advanced-age patient with many basic diseases and history of dexamethasone abuse. CASE PRESENTATION:A 71-year-old female was admitted with inflamed upper and lower limbs, rubefaction, pain and fever (about 40?°C). She had been injured in a fall at a vegetable market and then touched river snails with her injury hands. A few days later, soft tissue infection of the patient developed and worsened. Non-pigmented colonies were isolated from blood cultures of the patient. Initially, Vogesella perlucida was wrongly identified as Sphingomonas paucimobilis by Vitek-2 system with GN card. Besides, we failed to obtain an acceptable identification by the MALDI-TOF analysis. Finally, the isolated strain was identified as Vogesella perlucida by 16S rRNA gene sequences. In addition, the patient recovered well after a continuous treatment of levofloxacin for 12?days. CONCLUSION:Traditional microbiological testing system may be inadequate in the diagnosis of rare pathogenic bacteria. Applications of molecular diagnostics techniques have great advantages in clinical microbiology laboratory. By using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, we report the the first case of rare Vogesella perlucida-induced bacteremia.

Project description:Infectious complications after chorionic villus sampling (CVS) are rare (<0.1%) but can lead to maternal sepsis and spontaneous abortion. We report the first bacteremia with Atopobium vaginae and suggest A. vaginae to be a pathogenic microorganism that can lead to intrauterine infection and fetal death following CVS.

First case report of bacteremia caused by Solobacterium moorei in China, and literature review.

Project description:BackgroundSolobacterium moorei, the only species in the genus Solobacterium, is a Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, strict anaerobic, short to long bacillus. It has rarely been documented to cause blood stream infections. Here we report the first case of bacteremia caused by S.moorei in China.Case presentationA 61-year-old male presented to Peking Union Medical College Hospital (Beijing) with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and several other underlying diseases. He also had persistent coma accompanied by intermittent convulsions, halitosis, and intermittent fever. Blood cultures taken when the patient had a high fever were positive, with the anaerobic bottle yielding an organism identified as S.moorei by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, whilst the aerobic bottle grew Streptococcus mitis. After replacement of venous pipeline, and empirical use of vancomycin and meropenem, the patient's body temperature and white blood cell count returned to normal. Unfortunately, the patient died of severe TTP.ConclusionThis is the first case report of S. moorei isolation from blood stream in China. 16S rRNA gene sequencing is the only method that can identify S. moorei. Blood cultures must be taken before administration of antibiotics, and anaerobic culture should be considered for such rare pathogens in patients with oral diseases and immune deficiency.
