The cyanobactin biosynthetic pathways pat and tru, isolated from metagenomes of marine animals, lead to diverse natural products containing heterocycles derived from Cys, Ser, and Thr. Previous work has shown that PatD and TruD are extremely broad-substrate heterocyclase enzymes.
