Heterozygous mutations in the ribosomal protein S19 (RPS19) gene are associated with Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA). The mechanism by which RPS19 mediates anemia are still unclear, as well as the regulation of RPS19 expression. We show herein that RPS19 binds specifically to the 5' untranslated region of its own mRNA with an equilibrium binding constant (K(D)) of 4.1+/-1.9 nM.
