Experimentally, it was observed that the oxidized guanine lesion spiroiminodihydantoin (Sp) contained in highly purified oligodeoxynucleotides slowly converts to guanidinohydantoin (Gh). The reaction is accelerated in the presence of acid. The possible mechanisms of this transformation have been analyzed computationally.
