Hollow Sodium Tungsten Bronze (Na0.15WO3) Nanospheres: Preparation, Characterization, and Their Adsorption Properties.

ABSTRACT: We report herein a facile method for the preparation of sodium tungsten bronzes hollow nanospheres using hydrogen gas bubbles as reactant for chemical reduction of tungstate to tungsten and as template for the formation of hollow nanospheres at the same time. The chemical composition and the crystalline state of the as-prepared hollow Na0.15WO3nanospheres were characterized complementarily, and the hollow structure formation mechanism was proposed. The hollow Na0.15WO3nanospheres showed large Brunauer-Emment-Teller specific area (33.8 m2 g-1), strong resistance to acids, and excellent ability to remove organic molecules such as dye and proteins from aqueous solutions. These illustrate that the hollow nanospheres of Na0.15WO3should be a useful adsorbent.

Structural Evolution of Ferroelectric and Ferroelastic Barium Sodium Niobate Tungsten Bronze.

Project description:The crystal structure of the ferroelastic and ferroelectric tungsten bronze Ba2NaNb5O15 (BNN) has been debated. Here, we re-examine the crystal structure of BNN by ambient powder X-ray diffraction combined with density functional theory calculations. We demonstrate that the room temperature space group is Cmm2 with significant cation disorder on the Ba and Na cation sublattices. Density functional theory calculations reveal a relatively flat energy landscape between structures of different symmetries, including the energetics of cation disorder. We also study the structural evolution and the ferroelectric and ferroelastic phase transitions by high-temperature X-ray diffraction and dilatometry. The ferroelectric phase transition at 570 °C is of first order and cause the cell to expand in the c direction, while the ferroelastic distortion starting at 270 °C takes place in the ab plane and does not affect the polarization. The phase transitions are not coupled, which means that BNN is a ferroic material with two primary and uncoupled order parameters.

A novel route for preparation of hollow carbon nanospheres without introducing template.

Project description:UNLABELLED:A newly developed route for the synthesis of hollow carbon nanospheres without introducing template under hydrothermal conditions was reported. Hollow carbon nanospheres with the diameter of about 100 nm were synthesized using alginate as reagent only. Many instruments were applied to characterize the morphologies and structures of carbon hollow nanospheres, such as XRD, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The possible formation and growth mechanism of carbon hollow spheres were discussed on the basis of the investigation of reaction influence factors, such as temperature, time, and content. The findings would be useful for the synthesis of more materials with hollow structure and for the potential use in many aspects. The loading of SnO(2) on the surface of carbon hollow spheres was processed, and its PL property was also characterized. Hollow Bio-derived Polymer Nanospheres with Ordered Mesopores for Sodium-Ion Battery.

Project description:Bio-inspired hierarchical self-assembly provides elegant and powerful bottom-up strategies for the creation of complex materials. However, the current self-assembly approaches for natural bio-compounds often result in materials with limited diversity and complexity in architecture as well as microstructure. Here, we develop a novel coordination polymerization-driven hierarchical assembly of micelle strategy, using phytic acid-based natural compounds as an example, for the spatially controlled fabrication of metal coordination bio-derived polymers. The resultant ferric phytate polymer nanospheres feature hollow architecture, ordered meso-channels of ~ 12 nm, high surface area of 401 m2 g-1, and large pore volume of 0.53 cm3 g-1. As an advanced anode material, this bio-derivative polymer delivers a remarkable reversible capacity of 540 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1, good rate capability, and cycling stability for sodium-ion batteries. This study holds great potential of the design of new complex bio-materials with supramolecular chemistry.

Preparation of Hollow Niobium Oxide Nanospheres with Enhanced Catalytic Activity for Oxidative Desulfurization.

Project description:Hollow niobium oxide nanospheres were successfully synthesized by using prepared three-dimensional (3D) mesoporous carbon as the hard template. The 3D mesoporous carbon materials were prepared by using histidine as the carbon source and silica microspheres as the hard template. The samples were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and other methods. The results show that the prepared niobium oxide nanospheres have a hollow spherical structure with an outer diameter of about 45 nm and possess a high specific surface area of 134.3 m2·g-1. Furthermore, the 3D mesoporous carbon materials have a typical porous structure with a high specific surface area of 893 m2·g-1. The hollow niobium oxide nanospheres exhibit high catalytic activity in oxidative desulfurization. Under optimal reaction conditions, the DBT conversion rate of the simulated oil is as high as 98.5%. Finally, a possible reaction mechanism is proposed.

Facile synthesis of ultrahigh-surface-area hollow carbon nanospheres for enhanced adsorption and energy storage.

Project description:Exceptionally large surface area and well-defined nanostructure are both critical in the field of nanoporous carbons for challenging energy and environmental issues. The pursuit of ultrahigh surface area while maintaining definite nanostructure remains a formidable challenge because extensive creation of pores will undoubtedly give rise to the damage of nanostructures, especially below 100?nm. Here we report that high surface area of up to 3,022?m(2)?g(-1) can be achieved for hollow carbon nanospheres with an outer diameter of 69?nm by a simple carbonization procedure with carefully selected carbon precursors and carbonization conditions. The tailor-made pore structure of hollow carbon nanospheres enables target-oriented applications, as exemplified by their enhanced adsorption capability towards organic vapours, and electrochemical performances as electrodes for supercapacitors and sulphur host materials for lithium-sulphur batteries. The facile approach may open the doors for preparation of highly porous carbons with desired nanostructure for numerous applications.

Preparation and Adsorption Properties of Lignin/Cellulose Hydrogel.

Project description:With the development of global industry, industrial wastewater pollution has caused serious environmental problems, and the demand for green and sustainable adsorbents is increasingly strong in the society. In this article, lignin/cellulose hydrogel materials were prepared using sodium lignosulfonate and cellulose as raw materials and 0.1% acetic acid solution as a solvent. The results showed that the optimal adsorption conditions for Congo red were as follows: an adsorption time of 4 h, a pH value of 6, and an adsorption temperature of 45 °C. The adsorption process was in line with the Langmuir isothermal model and a quasi-second-order kinetic model, which belonged to single molecular layer adsorption, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 294.0 mg/g. The optimal adsorption conditions for Malachite green were as follows: an adsorption time of 4 h, a pH value of 4, and an adsorption temperature of 60 °C. The adsorption process was consistent with the Freundlich isothermal model and a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which belonged to the chemisorption-dominated multimolecular layer adsorption with the maximum adsorption capacity of 129.8 mg/g.

A Polar Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze with Colossal Second-Harmonic Generation.

Project description:A polar tetragonal tungsten bronze, Pb1.91 K3.22 □0.85 Li2.96 Nb10 O30 (□: vacancies), has been successfully synthesized by a high temperature solid-state reaction. Single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction indicate that the structure of Pb1.91 K3.22 □0.85 Li2.96 Nb10 O30 crystallizing in the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) space group, P4bm, consists of 3D framework with highly distorted NbO6 , LiO9 , PbO12 , and (Pb/K)O15 polyhedra. While NCS Pb1.91 K3.22 □0.85 Li2.96 Nb10 O30 undergoes a reversible phase transition between polar (P4bm) and nonpolar (P4/mbm) structure at around 460 °C, the material decomposes to centrosymmetric Pb1.45 K3.56 Li3.54 Nb10 O30 (P4/mbm) once heated to 1200 °C. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements with 1064 nm radiation indicate that Pb1.91 K3.22 □0.85 Li2.96 Nb10 O30 exhibits a giant phase-matchable SHG intensity of ≈71.5 times that of KH2 PO4 , which is the strongest intensity in the visible range among all nonlinear optical materials reported to date. The observed colossal SHG should be attributable to the synergistic effect of dipole moments from the well-aligned NbO6 octahedra, the constituting distortive channels with vacancies, and highly polarizable cations.

Facile Synthesis of Functional Mesoporous Organosilica Nanospheres and Adsorption Properties Towards Pb(II) Ions.

Project description:We successfully synthesize monodisperse sulfhydryl-modified mesoporous organosilica nanospheres (MONs-SH) via one-step hydrolytic condensation, where cetyltrimethylammonium chloride and dodecyl sulfobetaine are employed as dual-template agents with (3-mercaptopropyl)triethoxysilane and 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane as the precursors and concentrated ammonia as the alkaline catalyst. The prepared MONs-SHs deliver a large specific surface area (729.15 m2 g-1), excellent monodispersity, and homogeneous particle size. The introduction of ethanol into the reaction systems could expand the particle size of the synthesized MONs-SH materials from 18 to 182 nm. Moreover, the successful modification of -SH groups endowed MONs-SHs with an excellent adsorption capacity (297.12 mg g-1) for Pb2+ ions in aqueous solution through ion exchange and complexation function. In addition, the established isotherm model and kinetic analyses reveal that the adsorption of Pb2+ ions on MONs-SHs follows the secondary reaction kinetic models, where both physisorption and chemisorption contribute to the adsorption of Pb2+ ions. The favorable recyclability of MONs-SHs is demonstrated with the maintained adsorption efficiency of 85.35% after six cycles. The results suggest that the synthesized MONs-SHs exhibit considerable application prospects for effectively eliminating Pb2+ ions from aqueous solutions.

Preparation of Aminated Sodium Lignosulfonate and Efficient Adsorption of Methyl Blue Dye.

Project description:The aminated sodium lignosulfonate (AELS) was prepared through a Mannich reaction and characterized via FT-IR, TG, SEM and XPS in this study. Subsequently, the adsorption capacity of AELS for methyl blue (MB) was evaluated under various conditions such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration and temperature. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics of AELS for methyl blue were investigated and analyzed. The results were found to closely adhere to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting a single-molecular-layer adsorption process. Notably, the maximum adsorption capacity of AELS for methyl blue (153.42 mg g-1) was achieved under the specified conditions (T = 298 K, MAELS = 0.01 g, pH = 6, VMB = 25 mL, C0 = 300 mg L-1). The adsorption process was determined to be spontaneous and endothermic. Following five adsorption cycles, the adsorption capacity exhibited a minimal reduction from 118.99 mg g-1 to 114.33 mg g-1, indicating good stability. This study contributes to the advancement of utilizing natural resources effectively and sustainably.

Preparation of Hollow Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> Nanorods and Nanospheres by Nanoscale Kirkendall Diffusion, and Their Electrochemical Properties for Use in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:A novel process for the preparation of aggregate-free metal oxide nanopowders with spherical (0D) and non-spherical (1D) hollow nanostructures was introduced. Carbon nanofibers embedded with iron selenide (FeSe) nanopowders with various nanostructures are prepared via the selenization of electrospun nanofibers. Ostwald ripening occurs during the selenization process, resulting in the formation of a FeSe-C composite nanofiber exhibiting a hierarchical structure. These nanofibers transform into aggregate-free hollow Fe2O3 powders via the complete oxidation of FeSe and combustion of carbon. Indeed, the zero- (0D) and one-dimensional (1D) FeSe nanocrystals transform into the hollow-structured Fe2O3 nanopowders via a nanoscale Kirkendall diffusion process, thus conserving their overall morphology. The discharge capacities for the 1000th cycle of the hollow-structured Fe2O3 nanopowders obtained from the FeSe-C composite nanofibers prepared at selenization temperatures of 500, 800, and 1000 °C at a current density of 1 A g-1 are 932, 767, and 544 mA h g-1, respectively; and their capacity retentions from the second cycle are 88, 92, and 78%, respectively. The high structural stabilities of these hollow Fe2O3 nanopowders during repeated lithium insertion/desertion processes result in superior lithium-ion storage performances.
