Systematic Synthesis of a Metal Organic Framework Based on Triangular Cu(3)(?(3)-OH) Secondary Building Units: From a 0-D Complex, to an 1-D Chain and a 3-D Lattice

ABSTRACT: Reactions of Cu(CF(3)SO(3))(2) and pyrazole in methanolic solutions in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of py, py/4,4'-bpy, or 4,4'-bpy have yielded two new complexes [Cu(3)(?(3)-OH)(?-pz)(3)(py)(3)](CF(3)SO(3))(2)·0.5H(2)O (1) and [{Cu(3)(?(3)-OH)(?-pz)(3)(py)(2)}(2)(?-4,4'-bpy)](CF(3)SO(3))(4) (2), a one-dimensional coordination polymer, {[Cu(3)(?(3)-OH)(?-pz)(3)(py)(?-4,4'-bpy)](CF(3)SO(3))(2)·0.5H(2)O}(n) (3), and a three-dimensional, eight-fold interpenetrated extended lattice, {[Cu(3)(?(3)-OH)(?-pz)(3)(?-4,4'-bpy)(1.5)](CF(3)SO(3))(2)·1.5H(2)O}(n) (4).

A Homochiral Multifunctional Metal-Organic Framework with Rod-Shaped Secondary Building Units.

Project description:A new homochiral multifunctional metal-organic framework, [Zn₂(CTBA)₂·H₂O] (JUC-112), was synthesized under solvothermal conditions, through the design of chiral ligand 4-(3-carboxy-2,2,3-trimethylcyclopentanecarboxamido) benzoic acid (H₂CTBA) based on camphoric acid as building block. The crystal structure of the new material is a 2-dimensional (2D) chiral layer packed with infinite rod-shaped secondary building units (SBUs). The homochiral framework was identified by circular dichroism (CD) spectrum. Thermogravimetric measurement indicates its high thermal stability up to 450 °C. In addition, JUC-112 exhibits the capability of separating water from alcohols, second-order nonlinear optical effect, and photoluminescence.

Cobalt-bridged secondary building units in a titanium metal-organic framework catalyze cascade reduction of N-heteroarenes.

Project description:We report here a novel Ti3-BPDC metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed from biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate (BPDC) linkers and Ti3(OH)2 secondary building units (SBUs) with permanent porosity and large 1D channels. Ti-OH groups from neighboring SBUs point toward each other with an O-O distance of 2 Å, and upon deprotonation, act as the first bidentate SBU-based ligands to support CoII-hydride species for effective cascade reduction of N-heteroarenes (such as pyridines and quinolines) via sequential dearomative hydroboration and hydrogenation, affording piperidine and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives with excellent activity (turnover number ∼ 1980) and chemoselectivity.

Spin-lattice decoupling in a triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid.

Project description:A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic state of matter in condensed-matter systems, where the electron spins are strongly correlated, but conventional magnetic orders are suppressed down to zero temperature because of strong quantum fluctuations. One of the most prominent features of a QSL is the presence of fractionalized spin excitations, called spinons. Despite extensive studies, the nature of the spinons is still highly controversial. Here we report magnetocaloric-effect measurements on an organic spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet, showing that electron spins are decoupled from a lattice in a QSL state. The decoupling phenomena support the gapless nature of spin excitations. We further find that as a magnetic field is applied away from a quantum critical point, the number of spin states that interact with lattice vibrations is strongly reduced, leading to weak spin-lattice coupling. The results are compared with a model of a strongly correlated QSL near a quantum critical point.

Photocatalytic and Ferric Ion Sensing Properties of a New Three-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Based on Cuboctahedral Secondary Building Units.

Project description:A new three-dimensional microporous metal-organic framework based on Zn(II) clusters with the formula {[Zn7(NDC)5.5(μ4-OH)3]·7DMF} n (1) (H2NDC = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid) had been synthesized and characterized. The MOF 1 displays an uncommon bsn topology, which is based on a unique heptanuclear Zn7(OH)3(CO2)11 cluster as a secondary building unit. The MOF had been employed as a photocatalyst for the photodegradation of model organic dyes rhodamine B and methyl violet in light. The results of photocatalytic experiments showed that 1 can successfully be employed as the photocatalyst for the benign decomposition of these dyes. A mechanism for the photcatalysis exhibited by 1 had been proposed using the results of density of states (DOS) and partial DOS calculations. The fluorescence properties of the MOF have been investigated, which revealed that 1 could be exploited as the luminescent sensor to recognize Fe3+ ions with perceptible quenching (K sv = 6.55 × 104 M-1) and a limit of detection of 1.16 ppm.

RNA folding on the 3D triangular lattice.

Project description:BACKGROUND: Difficult problems in structural bioinformatics are often studied in simple exact models to gain insights and to derive general principles. Protein folding, for example, has long been studied in the lattice model. Recently, researchers have also begun to apply the lattice model to the study of RNA folding. RESULTS: We present a novel method for predicting RNA secondary structures with pseudoknots: first simulate the folding dynamics of the RNA sequence on the 3D triangular lattice, next extract and select a set of disjoint base pairs from the best lattice conformation found by the folding simulation. Experiments on sequences from PseudoBase show that our prediction method outperforms the HotKnot algorithm of Ren, Rastegari, Condon and Hoos, a leading method for RNA pseudoknot prediction. Our method for RNA secondary structure prediction can be adapted into an efficient reconstruction method that, given an RNA sequence and an associated secondary structure, finds a conformation of the sequence on the 3D triangular lattice that realizes the base pairs in the secondary structure. We implemented a suite of computer programs for the simulation and visualization of RNA folding on the 3D triangular lattice. These programs come with detailed documentation and are accessible from the companion website of this paper at http://www.cs.usu.edu/~mjiang/rna/DeltaIS/. CONCLUSION: Folding simulation on the 3D triangular lattice is effective method for RNA secondary structure prediction and lattice conformation reconstruction. The visualization software for the lattice conformations of RNA structures is a valuable tool for the study of RNA folding and is a great pedagogic device.

2D Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Frameworks Featuring Rod-Shaped Secondary Building Units.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) encompass a rapidly expanding class of materials with diverse potential applications including gas storage, molecular separation, sensing and catalysis. So-called 'rod MOFs', which comprise infinitely extended 1D secondary building units (SBUs), represent an underexplored subclass of MOF. Further, porphyrins are considered privileged ligands for MOF synthesis due to their tunable redox and photophysical properties. In this study, the CuII complex of 5,15-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-10,20-diphenylporphyrin (H2L-CuII, where H2 refers to the ligand's carboxyl H atoms) is used to prepare two new 2D porphyrinic rod MOFs PROD-1 and PROD-2. Single-crystal X-ray analysis reveals that these frameworks feature 1D MnII- or CoII-based rod-like SBUs that are coordinated by labile solvent molecules and photoactive porphyrin moieties. Both materials were characterised using infrared (IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The structural attributes of PROD-1 and PROD-2 render them promising materials for future photocatalytic investigations.

The Anisotropic Responses of a Flexible Metal-Organic Framework Constructed from Asymmetric Flexible Linkers and Heptanuclear Zinc Carboxylate Secondary Building Units.

Project description:A new porous and flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized from the flexible asymmetric linker N-(4-carboxyphenyl)succinamate (CSA) and heptanuclear zinc oxo-clusters of formula [Zn7O2(carboxylate)10DMF2] involving two coordinated terminal DMF ligands. The structural response of this MOF to the removal or exchange of its guest molecules has been probed using a combination of experimental and computational approaches. The topology of the material, involving double linker connections in the a and b directions and single linker connections along the c axis, is shown to be key in the material's anisotropic response. The a and b directions remain locked during guest removal, whereas the c axis linker undergoes large changes significantly reducing the material's void space. The changes to the c axis linker involve a combination of a hinge motion on the linker's rigid side and conformational rearrangements on its flexible end, which were probed in detail during this process despite the presence of crystallographic disorder along this axis, which prevented accurate characterization by experimental methods alone. Although inactive during guest removal, the flexible ends of the a and b axis linkers are observed to play a prominent role during DMF to DMSO solvent exchange, facilitating the exchange reaction arising in the cluster.

Boron Triangular Kagome Lattice with Half-Metallic Ferromagnetism.

Project description:Based on the first-principles evolutionary materials design, we report a stable boron Kagome lattice composed of triangles in triangles on a two-dimensional sheet. The Kagome lattice can be synthesized on a silver substrate, with selecting Mg atoms as guest atoms. While the isolated Kagome lattice is slightly twisted without strain, it turns into an ideal triangular Kagome lattice under tensile strain. In the triangular Kagome lattice, we find the exotic electronic properties, such as topologically non-trivial flat band near the Fermi energy and half-metallic ferromagnetism, and predict the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the presence of spin-orbit coupling.

Quantum electric-dipole liquid on a triangular lattice.

Project description:Geometric frustration and quantum fluctuations may prohibit the formation of long-range ordering even at the lowest temperature, and therefore liquid-like ground states could be expected. A good example is the quantum spin liquid in frustrated magnets. Geometric frustration and quantum fluctuations can happen beyond magnetic systems. Here we propose that quantum electric-dipole liquids, analogues of quantum spin liquids, could emerge in frustrated dielectrics where antiferroelectrically coupled electric dipoles reside on a triangular lattice. The quantum paraelectric hexaferrite BaFe12O19 with geometric frustration represents a promising candidate for the proposed electric-dipole liquid. We present a series of experimental lines of evidence, including dielectric permittivity, heat capacity and thermal conductivity measured down to 66 mK, to reveal the existence of an unusual liquid-like quantum phase in BaFe12O19, characterized by itinerant low-energy excitations with a small gap. The possible quantum liquids of electric dipoles in frustrated dielectrics open up a fresh playground for fundamental physics.

A Porphyrinic Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework for Oxygen Reduction Reaction: Tailoring the Spacing between Active-Sites through Chain-Based Inorganic Building Units.

Project description:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is central in carbon-neutral energy devices. While platinum group materials have shown high activities for ORR, their practical uses are hampered by concerns over deactivation, slow kinetics, exorbitant cost, and scarce nature reserve. The low cost yet high tunability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide a unique platform for tailoring their characteristic properties as new electrocatalysts. Herein, we report a new concept of design and present stable Zr-chain-based MOFs as efficient electrocatalysts for ORR. The strategy is based on using Zr-chains to promote high chemical and redox stability and, more importantly, tailor the immobilization and packing of redox active-sites at a density that is ideal to improve the reaction kinetics. The obtained new electrocatalyst, PCN-226, thereby shows high ORR activity. We further demonstrate PCN-226 as a promising electrode material for practical applications in rechargeable Zn-air batteries, with a high peak power density of 133 mW cm-2. Being one of the very few electrocatalytic MOFs for ORR, this work provides a new concept by designing chain-based structures to enrich the diversity of efficient electrocatalysts and MOFs.
