Anthracene functionalized terpyridines - synthesis and properties.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of several symmetrically 4,4''-functionalized 2,2':6',2''-terpyridines is reported. In addition to the biscarboxylic acid 4,4''-tpy(CO₂H)₂ (3), the anthryl esters 4,4''-tpy(CO₂CH₂Anth) ₂(5a) and 4,4''-tpy(CO₂CH₂CH₂OAnth)₂ (5b) were synthesized. Furthermore, both anthryl esters were used to synthesize symmetric iron(II)-bis(terpyridine)complexes 6a-b. Irradiation experiments were carried out with both the free ligands and an iron(II)-complex in order to investigate the photochemistry of the compounds.

Synthesis and properties of fluorescent 4'-azulenyl-functionalized 2,2':6',2″-terpyridines.

Project description:4'-Azulenyl-substituted terpyridines were efficiently synthesized following the Kröhnke methodology via azulenylchalcone intermediates. These azulenyl-containing terpyridines showed fluorescent emission with a fluorescence quantum yield varying from 0.14, in the case of parent terpyridine, to 0.64 when methyl groups are grafted on the azulenyl seven-membered ring. According to the crystal structures and TDDFT calculations, different twisting of the aromatic constituents is responsible for the observed fluorescent behavior. The electrochemical profile contains one-electron oxidation/reduction steps, which can only be explained on the basis of the redox behavior of the azulene unit. The ability of the 4'-azulenyl 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine to bind poisoning metal cations was studied by UV-vis titrations using aqueous solutions of Hg(II) and Cd(II) chlorides as illustrative examples.

A julolidine-fused anthracene derivative: synthesis, photophysical properties, and oxidative dimerization.

Project description:We describe the synthesis and characterization of a julolidine-fused anthracene derivative J-A, which exhibits a maximum absorption of 450 nm and a maximum emission of 518 nm. The fluorescent quantum yield was determined to be 0.55 in toluene. J-A dimerizes in solution via oxidative coupling. Structure of the dimer was characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Synthesis of Terpyridines: Simple Reactions-What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Project description:The preparation of 24-functionalized 12,22:26,32-terpyridines (4'-functionalized 3,2:6',3''-terpyridines) by the reaction of three 4-alkoxybenzaldehydes with 3-acetylpyridine and ammonia was investigated; under identical reaction conditions, two (R = nC4H9, C2H5) gave the expected products whereas a third (R = nC3H7) gave only a cyclohexanol derivative derived from the condensation of three molecules of 3-acetylpyridine with two of 4-(n-propoxy)benzaldehyde. A comprehensive survey of ''unexpected'' products from reactions of ArCOCH3 derivatives with aromatic aldehydes is presented. Three different types of alternative product are identified.

Synthesis and Properties of Bridgehead-Functionalized Permethylbicyclo[2.2.2]octasilanes.

Project description:A series of previously unknown bridgehead-functionalized bicyclo[2.2.2]octasilanes, Me3Si-Si8Me12-X, X-Si8Me12-X, and X-Si8Me12-Y [X, Y = -SiMe n Ph3-n (n = 1, 2) (2, 3, 10), -SiMe2Fc (Fc = ferrocenyl) (4, 11, 13, 14), -COR (R = Me, tBu) (6, 7, 12), COOMe (8), COOH (9)], have been prepared by the reaction of the silanides Me3Si-Si8Me12-K+ or K+-Si8Me12-K+ with proper electrophiles and fully characterized. The molecular structures of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 13 as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis exhibit a slightly twisted structure of the bicyclooctasilane cage. Endocyclic bond lengths, bond angles, and dihedral angles are not influenced considerably by the substituents attached to the bridgehead silicon atoms. Due to σ(SiSi)/π(aryl) conjugation, a 20-30 nm bathochromic shift of the longest wavelength UV absorption band relative to Me3Si-Si8Me12-SiMe3 (1) is evident in the UV absorption spectra of the phenyl and ferrocenyl derivatives. Otherwise, UV absorption data do not support the assumption of aryl/aryl or aryl/C=O interaction via the σ(SiSi) bicyclooctasilane framework.

An anthracene-containing crown ether: synthesis, host-guest properties and modulation of solid state luminescence.

Project description:Organic solid state vapochromic materials are of great significance for the development of supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Herein, we synthesize a crown ether derivative (An34C10) containing two anthracene units and construct new crown ether-based vapochromic host-guest co-crystals. Due to the presence of anthracene, An34C10 not only shows good fluorescence properties but also displays mechanochromism. Single crystal structural analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments demonstrate that the transformation between different stacking modes of An34C10 is responsible for mechanochromism. In addition, An34C10 can complex with 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) to form host-guest complex (An34C10@TCNB) co-crystals. Because organic solvent fuming alters charge-transfer interactions in An34C10@TCNB, the fluorescence of the co-crystals can be turned on and off by 4-methylpyridine and chloroform vapors, respectively, realizing selective detection with opposite emission outputs. Meanwhile, the stimuli-responsive properties of An34C10 and An34C10@TCNB possess good cycling performance. This work provides a new strategy for the construction of organic solid state luminescent materials.

Synthesis and fluorescence properties of europium complex functionalized fiberglass paper.

Project description:The development of novel rare earth fluorescent materials and the exploration of their applications have consistently been focal points of research in the fields of materials science and chemistry. In this work, a novel rare earth composite material with good photo-fluorescence properties and self-supporting has been prepared via a simple ultrasonic solvent reaction method. Initially, the Phen moieties is immobilized onto the surface of a self-supporting fiberglass paper using ICPTES, followed by the coordination of Eu(TTA)3 moieties with Phen moieties through a convenient ultrasonic solvent reaction. The resulting GF-Phen-Eu(TTA)3 has been characterized using FTIR, UV-Vis DRS, fluorescence measurements, and so on. The results indicate that the composite material exhibits strong fluorescent emission and presents a vivid red color under ultraviolet light. Further research has shown that the fluorescence of GF-Phen-Eu(TTA)3 strips demonstrated a pronounced quenching effect in response to some transition metal ions (1 mM). Hence, the rare earth composite materials presented here can be utilized not only for the production of optical materials, but also for the development of fluorescence sensing strips.

Data on synthesis and thermo-mechanical properties of stimuli-responsive rubber materials bearing pendant anthracene groups.

Project description:The photo-reversible [4πs+4πs] cycloaddition reaction of pendant anthracene moieties represents a convenient strategy to impart wavelength dependent properties into hydrogenated carboxylated nitrile butadiene rubber (HXNBR) networks. The present article provides the 1H NMR data on the reaction kinetics of the side chain functionalization of HXNBR. 2-(Anthracene-9-yl)oxirane with reactive epoxy groups is covalently attached to the polymer side chain of HXNBR via ring opening reaction between the epoxy and the carboxylic groups. Along with the identification, 1H NMR data on the quantification of the attached functional groups are shown in dependence on reaction time and concentration of 2-(anthracene-9-yl)oxirane. Changes in the modification yield are reflected in the mechanical properties and DMA data of photo-responsive elastomers are illustrated in dependence on the number of attached anthracene groups. DMA curves over repeated cycles of UV induced crosslinking (λ>300 nm) and UV induced cleavage (λ=254 nm) are further depicted, demonstrating the photo-reversibility of the thermo-mechanical properties. Interpretation and discussion of the data are provided in "Design and application of photo-reversible elastomer networks by using the [4πs+4πs] cycloaddition reaction of pendant anthracene groups" (Manhart et al., 2016) [1].

Synthesis and properties of sulfur-functionalized triarylmethylium, acridinium and triangulenium dyes.

Project description:Triangulenium dyes functionalized with one, two or three ethylthiol functionalities were synthesized and their optical properties were studied. The sulfur functionalities were introduced by aromatic nucleophilic substitution of methoxy groups in triarylmethylium cations with ethanethiol followed by partial or full ring closure of the ortho positions with nitrogen or oxygen bridges leading to sulfur-functionalized acridinium, xanthenium or triangulenium dyes. For all the dye classes the sulfur functionalities are found to lead to intensely absorbing dyes in the visible range (470 to 515 nm), quite similar to known analogous dye systems with dialkylamino donor groups in place of the ethylthiol substituents. For the triangulenium derivatives significant fluorescence was observed (Φf = 0.1 to Φf = 0.3).

Synthesis and biophysical properties of C5-functionalized LNA (locked nucleic acid).

Project description:Oligonucleotides modified with conformationally restricted nucleotides such as locked nucleic acid (LNA) monomers are used extensively in molecular biology and medicinal chemistry to modulate gene expression at the RNA level. Major efforts have been devoted to the design of LNA derivatives that induce even higher binding affinity and specificity, greater enzymatic stability, and more desirable pharmacokinetic profiles. Most of this work has focused on modifications of LNA's oxymethylene bridge. Here, we describe an alternative approach for modulation of the properties of LNA: i.e., through functionalization of LNA nucleobases. Twelve structurally diverse C5-functionalized LNA uridine (U) phosphoramidites were synthesized and incorporated into oligodeoxyribonucleotides (ONs), which were then characterized with respect to thermal denaturation, enzymatic stability, and fluorescence properties. ONs modified with monomers that are conjugated to small alkynes display significantly improved target affinity, binding specificity, and protection against 3'-exonucleases relative to regular LNA. In contrast, ONs modified with monomers that are conjugated to bulky hydrophobic alkynes display lower target affinity yet much greater 3'-exonuclease resistance. ONs modified with C5-fluorophore-functionalized LNA-U monomers enable fluorescent discrimination of targets with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). In concert, these properties render C5-functionalized LNA as a promising class of building blocks for RNA-targeting applications and nucleic acid diagnostics.

Synthesis and Properties of Norphthalocyanines Functionalized with a Tetrathiacrown Ether-Tetrathiafulvalene Substituent.

Project description:To construct novel ion receptors and D-A self-assembly systems for materials with better functions, the annulation of a tetrathiafulvalene donor with a magnesium norphthalocyanine core via a flexible tetrathiacrown ether bridge afforded a new triad 1. The structure of this product was characterized by 1H NMR and infrared spectroscopy, time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The optical and electrochemical properties were investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The complex of triad 1 and 2,3,5,6- tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane produced electron transfer with a radical cationic character, as confirmed by UV-Vis and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. Furthermore, the target compound presented evident intramolecular charge-transfer interactions in ground states, which were explained using density functional theory. Furthermore, norphthalocyanine 1 was able to coordinate Ag+ through the peripheral ligating oxathiaether crown.
