Hexaaqua-cadmium(II) bis-{[N-(2-oxidobenzyl-idene)glycyl-l-leucinato]cuprate(II)} dihydrate.

ABSTRACT: The title compound, [Cd(H(2)O)(6)][Cu(C(15)H(17)N(2)O(4))](2)·2H(2)O, has a chiral structure. Copper has a square-planar coordination with two N and two O atoms of the quadridentate chiral Schiff base ligand. The Cd(2+) ion is coordinated by six aqua ligands with a slightly distorted octa-hedral configuration. Ions are linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, and the [Cd(H(2)O)(6)](2+) cations and [CuL](-) anions (L = Schiff base derived from glycyl-l-leucine and salicylaldehyde) occupy a stacking structure within well separated columns along the a axis. The two crystallographically independent copper-Schiff base anions each have a chiral carbon centre with an S configuration. They are related by a non-crystallographic twofold rotation axis parallel to the [010] direction.

The Mg(II) center, which sits on an inversion center, is coordinated by six aqua ligands and exhibits a slightly distorted octa-hedral conformation. The asymmetric unit consists of an [N-(4-meth-oxy-2-oxidobenzyl-idene)glycyl-glycinato]cuprate(II) anion, one half of an [Mg(H(2)O)(6)](2+) cation and three free water mol-ecules. The cations and anions form columns by O-H?O hydrogen bonds.

The Cu(II) atoms are coordinated by one phenolate O atom, one imine N atom, one amido N atom and one carboxyl-ate O atom. The Cd(II) atom is connected via the carboxyl-ate groups, forming a heterotrinuclear Cu(II)-Cd(II)-Cu(II) system. The Cd(II) atom is seven-coordinate in a penta-gonal-bipyramidal geometry with four O atoms from two carboxyl-ate groups and three aqua ligands. The heterotrinuclear mol-ecules are linked to the uncoordinated water mol-ecules by O-H?O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional framework.

The Mn(II) atom is located on an inversion center and is coordinated to six water mol-ecules in a slightly distorted octa-hedral geometry. The Cu(II) atom is chelated by the tetra-dentate Schiff base ligand in a distorted CuN(2)O(2) square-planar coordination. In the crystal structure, the complex [Mn(H(2)O)(6)](2+) cations and the [CuL](-) anions are arranged in columns parallel to the a axis and are held together by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding. Additional hydrogen bonds of the same type further link the columns into a three-dimensional network.
