Project description:Researchers have suggested that the reason behind infertility is pernicious effect of broad spectrum pesticides on non target, beneficial microorganism of soil. Here, studying the chelating effect of selective organophosphate and carbamate pesticides with essential metal ions, at all possible combinations of three different pH (4 ± 0.05, 7 ± 0.05 and 9 ± 0.05) and three different temperatures (15 ± 0.5°C, 30 ± 0.5°C and 45 ± 0.5°C), shows very fast rate of reaction which further increases with increase of pH and temperature. Carbonyl oxygen of carbamate and phosphate oxygen of organophosphate were found to be common ligating sites among all the complexes. Formed metal complexes were found to be highly stable and water insoluble on interaction with essential metal ions in solvent medium as well as over silica. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations not only reinforced the experimental observations, but, after a wide computational conformational analysis, unraveled the nature of the high stable undesired species that consist of pesticides complexed by metal ions from the soil. All in all, apart from the direct toxicity of pesticides, the indirect effect by means of complexation of free metal ions impoverishes the soil.

In comparison to the capture of Cs ions, the extent of which depends on the type and position of the anion employed in the cesium salt, the enhanced strength of Tl···π vs Cs···π interactions facilitates permanent entrapment of Tl(+) ions on the capsule interior. "Stitching-up" the capsule seam with a tertiary metal (Zn, Rb, or K) affords new trimetallic nanocapsules in solid state.

Project description:Humic acids (HAs) can act as electron shuttles and mediate biogeochemical cycles, thereby influencing the transformation of nutrients and environmental pollutants. HAs commonly complex with metals in the environment, but few studies have focused on how these metals affect the roles of HAs in extracellular electron transfer (EET). In this study, HA-metal (HA-M) complexes (HA-Fe, HA-Cu, and HA-Al) were prepared and characterized. The electron shuttle capacities of HA-M complexes were experimentally evaluated through microbial Fe(III) reduction, biocurrent generation, and microbial azoreduction. The results show that the electron shuttle capacities of HAs were enhanced after complexation with Fe but were weakened when using Cu or Al. Density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the structural geometry of the HA-M complexes and revealed the best binding sites of the HAs to metals and the varied charge transfer rate constants (k). The EET activity of the HA-M complexes were in the order HA-Fe > HA-Cu > HA-Al. These findings have important implications for biogeochemical redox processes given the ubiquitous nature of both HAs and various metals in the environment.

Project description:In this work, we prepared a fluorescein hydrazide-appended Ni(MOF) (Metal-Organic Framework) [Ni3(BTC)2(H2O)3]·(DMF)3(H2O)3 composite, FH@Ni(MOF). This composite was well-characterized by PXRD (powder X-ray diffraction), FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), N2 adsorption isotherm, TGA (thermogravimetric analysis), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and FESEM (field emission scanning electron microscopy). This composite was then tested with different heavy metals and was found to act as a highly selective and sensitive optical sensor for the Hg2+ ion. It was found that the aqueous emulsion of this composite produces a new peak in absorption at 583 nm, with a chromogenic change to a pink color visible to the naked eye upon binding with Hg2+ ions. In emission, it enhances fluorescence with a fluorogenic change to green fluorescence upon complexation with the Hg2+ ion. The binding constant was found to be 9.4 × 105 M-1, with a detection limit of 0.02 μM or 5 ppb. This sensor was also found to be reversible and could be used for seven consecutive cycles. It was also tested for Hg2+ ion detection in practical water samples from ground water, tap water, and drinking water.

Project description:Drug adulteration and contamination are serious threats to human health therefore, their accurate monitoring is very important. Allopurinol (Alp) and theophylline (Thp) are commonly used drugs for the treatment of gout and bronchitis, while their isomers hypoxanthine (Hyt) and theobromine (Thm) have no effect and affect the efficacy of the drug. In this work, the drug isomers of Alp/Hyt and Thp/Thm are simply mixed with α-, β-, γ-cyclodextrin (CD) and metal ions and separated using trapped ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (TIMS-MS). TIMS-MS results showed that Alp/Hyt and Thp/Thm isomers could interact with CD and metal ions and form corresponding binary or ternary complexes to achieve their TIMS separation. Different metal ions and CDs showed different separation effect for the isomers, among which Alp and Hyt could be successfully distinguished from the complexes of [Alp/Hyt+γ-CD + Cu–H]+ with separation resolution (RP–P) of 1.51; whereas Thp and Thm could be baseline separated by [Thp/Thm+γ-CD + Ca–H]+ with RP–P of 1.96. Besides, chemical calculations revealed that the complexes were in the inclusion forms, and microscopic interactions were somewhat different, making their mobility separation. Moreover, relative and absolute quantification was investigated with an internal standard to determine the precise isomers content, and good linearity (R2 > 0.99) was obtained. Finally, the method was applied for the adulteration detection where different drugs and urine were analyzed. In addition, due to the advantages of fast speed, simple operation, high sensitivity, and no chromatographic separation required, the proposed method provides an effective strategy for the drug adulteration detection of isomers. Project description:Small-molecular probes capable of monitoring and interfering with the activity of biomacromolecules - such as polysaccharides, nucleotides and proteins - are of paramount importance to the advancement of life science. However, such probes that can detect and simultaneously modulate the construction of biomacromolecules are elusive. Here we report a fluorogenic, foldable glycoprobe that can recognize and assemble a protein receptor in a synchronous fashion. The glycoprobe synthesized by introducing a glycoligand (for protein recognition) to a bola-type bis-fluorophore conjugate shows a "self-shielded" fluorescence in the folded state. Association with a receptor protein rapidly unfolds the probe, releasing a fluorophore capable of crosslinking the proteins - as determined using small-angle X-ray scattering - thereby producing a unique fluorescent supramolecular construct. We have demonstrated the use of the foldable glycoprobe in order to track the endocytic cycle of a transmembrane receptor.

Project description:Sugar degradation products generated through thermal treatment of foods are considered the key precursors for various flavor compounds, toxicants and browning, but their high reactivity makes their detection difficult. In this study, a convenient analytical procedure for profiling of various reactive sugar intermediates having enediol or α -dicarbonyl moieties through complexation with divalent metal ions combined with electrospray ionization/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was developed. Excess divalent iron chloride (FeCl2) was added to glucose or 13U6-[glucose] solutions in methanol either before or after heating at 110 °C for 2 h, and the samples were analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry. The results indicated the formation of ethylene glycol, glycolaldehyde, glyceraldehyde, glycerol, methylglyoxal, glyoxylic acid, erythrose, erythrosone, 3-deoxy-erythrosone, erythritol, ribose, ribosone, 3-deoxy-ribose, ribitol, 3-deoxy-glucosone, and rhamnose. These sugars and sugar degradation products acting as bidentate ligands were detected as positively charged mono- and bis-sugar iron complexes in the form of [M + H]+, [M + Na]+, [M + K]+, [M + Fe35Cl]+, and [M + Fe37Cl]+, as well as by charge localization on iron [M]+. The divalent metal complexation technique was applied for the profiling of sugar degradation products in aged manuka honey.

Project description:The development of new materials for separating ethylene (C2H4) from ethane (C2H6) by adsorption is of great importance in the petrochemical industry, but remains very challenging owing to their close molecular sizes and physical properties. Using isoreticular chemistry in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) enables the precise design and construction of target materials with suitable aperture sizes and functional sites for gas separations. Herein, it is described that fine-tuning of pore size and π-complexation simultaneously in microporous copper(I)-chelated MOFs can remarkably boost the C2H4/C2H6 adsorption selectivity. The judicious choice of organic linkers with a different number of carboxyl groups in the UiO-66 framework not only allows the fine tuning of the pore size but also immobilizes copper(I) ions onto the framework. The tailor-made adsorbent, CuI@UiO-66-(COOH)2, thus possesses the optimal pore window size and chelated Cu(I) ions to form π-complexation with C2H4 molecules. It can rapidly adsorb C2H4 driven by the strong π-complexation interactions, while effectively reducing C2H6 uptake due to the selective size-sieving. Therefore, this material exhibits an ultrahigh C2H4/C2H6 selectivity (80.8), outperforming most previously described benchmark materials. The exceptional separation performance of CuI@UiO-66-(COOH)2 is validated by breakthrough experiments for 50/50 v/v C2H4/C2H6 mixtures under ambient conditions.

Project description:Effective receptors for the separation of Li+ from a mixture with other alkali metal ions under mild conditions remains an important challenge that could benefit from new approaches. In this study, it is demonstrated that the 4-phosphoryl pyrazolones, HL2 -HL4 , in the presence of the typical industrial organophosphorus co-ligands tributylphosphine oxide (TBPO), tributylphosphate (TBP) and trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO), are able to selectively recognise and extract lithium ions from aqueous solution. Structural investigations in solution as well as in the solid state reveal the existence of a series of multinuclear Li+ complexes that include dimers (TBPO, TBP) as well as rarely observed trimers (TOPO) and represent the first clear evidence for the synergistic role of the co-ligands in the extraction process. Our findings are supported by detailed NMR, MS and extraction studies. Liquid-liquid extraction in the presence of TOPO revealed an unprecedented high Li+ extraction efficiency (78 %) for HL4 compared to the use of the industrially employed acylpyrazolone HL1 (15 %) and benzoyl-1,1,1-trifluoroacetone (52 %) extractants. In addition, a high selectivity for Li+ over Na+ , K+ and Cs+ under mild conditions (pH ∼8.2) confirms that HL2 -HL4 represent a new class of ligands that are very effective extractants for use in lithium separation.

Project description:Among a large variety of organic semiconducting materials, rubrene (5,6,11,12-tetraphenyltetracene) represents one of the most prominent molecular entities mainly because of its unusually high carrier mobility. Toward finding superior rubrene-based organic semiconductors, several synthetic strategies for related molecules have been established. However, despite its outstanding properties and significant attention in the field of materials science, late-stage functionalizations of rubrene remains undeveloped, thereby limiting the accessible chemical space of rubrene-based materials. Herein, we report on a late-stage π-extension of rubrene by dearomative annulative π-extension (DAPEX), leading to the generation of rubrene derivatives having an extended acene core. The Diels-Alder reaction of rubrene with 4-methyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione occurred to give 1:1 and 1:2 cycloadducts which further underwent iron-catalyzed annulative diarylation. The thus-formed 1:1 and 1:2 adducts were subjected to radical-mediated oxidation and thermal cycloreversion to furnish one-side and two-side π-extended rubrenes, respectively. These π-extended rubrenes displayed a marked red shift in absorption and emission spectra, clearly showing that the acene π-system of rubrene was extended not only structurally but also electronically. The X-ray crystallographic analysis uncovered interesting packing modes of these π-extended rubrenes. Particularly, two-side π-extended rubrene adopts a brick-wall packing structure with largely overlapping two-dimensional face-to-face π-π interactions. Finally, organic field-effect transistor devices using two-side π-extended rubrene were fabricated, and their carrier mobilities were measured. The observed maximum hole mobility of 1.49 × 10-3 cm2V-1 s-1, which is a comparable value to that of the thin-film transistor using rubrene, clearly shows the potential utility of two-side π-extended rubrene in organic electronics.
