Project description:Lead-free double perovskites are studied as an optional replacement to lead halide perovskites in optoelectronic applications. Recently, double-perovskite materials in which two divalent lead cations are replaced with an Ag+ and a trivalent cation have been demonstrated. The presence of a reactive silver cation and observations of metallic silver nanodecorations raised concerns regarding the stability and applicability of these materials. To better understand the nucleation and crystal growth of lead-free double perovskites, we explore the origin and role that metallic silver nanoparticles (NPs) play in the Ag-based Pb-free double-perovskite nanocrystal (NC) systems such as Cs2AgInCl6, Cs2AgSbCl6, Cs2AgBiCl6, and Cs2AgBiBr6. With major focus on Cs2AgInCl6 NCs, we show evidence supporting growth of the NCs through heterogeneous nucleation on preexisting metallic silver seeds. The silver seeds nucleate prior to injection of halide through reduction of the Ag+ ion by the aminic ligand. The presence of preexisting silver NPs is supported by a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The injection of halide precursor into the reaction mixture step initiates a fast nucleation and growth of the perovskite NC on the silver seed. The change in the dielectric medium at the interface of the silver NP results in a quantifiable red shift of the LSPR peak. In addition, we demonstrate charge transfer from the perovskite to the silver NP through photoinduced electrochemical Ostwald ripening of the silver NPs via UV irradiation. The ripened perovskite-metal hybrid nanocrystal exhibits modified optical properties in the form of quenched emission and enhanced plasmonic absorption. Future development of Ag-based double-perovskite NC applications depends on the ability to control Ag+ reduction at all synthetic stages. This understanding is critical for delivering stability and functionality for silver-based lead-free perovskite nanocrystals.

Project description:Many DNA-functionalized nanomaterials and biosensors have been reported, but most have ignored the influence of DNA on the stability of nanoparticles. We observed that cytosine-rich DNA oligonucleotides can etch silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In this work, we showed that phosphorothioate (PS)-modified DNA (PS-DNA) can etch AgNPs independently of DNA sequence, suggesting that the thio-modifications are playing the major role in etching. Compared to unmodified DNA (e.g., poly-cytosine DNA), the concentration of required PS DNA decreases sharply, and the reaction rate increases. Furthermore, etching by PS-DNA occurs quite independent of pH, which is also different from unmodified DNA. The PS-DNA mediated etching could also be controlled well by varying DNA length and conformation, and the number and location of PS modifications. With a higher activity of PS-DNA, the process of etching, ripening, and further etching was taken place sequentially. The etching ability is inhibited by forming duplex DNA and thus etching can be used to measure the concentration of complementary DNA.

Project description:The present article demonstrates the development of two-dimensional (2D) assembly of spherical nanocrystals (NCs) in the square arrangement through the delicate balance between repulsive ligand interactions and attractive van der Waals interactions of NCs, respectively, instead of the otherwise stable hexagonal arrangement. The experimental packing efficiency values matched quite well with the theoretically calculated square arrangement patterns. The above fact indicates that the formation of the 2D square arrangement of silver NCs can be explained by introducing the concept of softness to NCs in the hard sphere model.

Project description:This article presents a study on Metal-Assisted Chemical Etching (MACE) of silicon in HF-H2O2 using silver nanoparticles as catalysts. Our aim is a better understanding of the process to elaborate new 3D submicrometric surface structures useful for light management. We investigated MACE over the whole range of silicon doping, i.e., p++, p+, p, p-, n, n+, and n++. We discovered that, instead of the well-defined and straight mesopores obtained in p and n-type silicon, in p++ and n++ silicon MACE leads to the formation of cone-shaped macropores filled with porous silicon. We account for the transition between these two pore-formation regimes (straight and cone-shaped pores) by modeling (at equilibrium and under polarization) the Ag/Si/electrolyte (HF) system. The model simulates the system as two nanodiodes in series. We show that delocalized MACE is explained by a large tunnel current contribution for the p-Si/Ag and n-Si/HF diodes under reverse polarization, which increases with the doping level and when the size of the nanocontacts (Ag, HF) decreases. By analogy with the results obtained on heavily doped silicon, we finally present a method to form size-controlled cone-shaped macropores in p silicon with silver nanoparticles. This shape, instead of the usual straight mesopores, is obtained by applying an external anodic polarization during MACE. Two methods are shown to be effective for the control of the macropore cone angle: one by adjusting the potential applied during MACE, the other by changing the H2O2 concentration. Under appropriate etching conditions, the obtained macropores exhibit optical properties (reflectivity ~3 %) similar to that of black silicon.

Project description:A new method, named "re-growth etching", which introduces a unique etchant "Au(I)", has been developed to fabricate large-sized porous gold nanostructures. The size of nanostructures and the number of pores can be regulated by the molar ratio of Ag and Au in the precursor. We have evaluated their performance by a model reaction of the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The catalytic property of porous Au from Ag67.6Au32.4 (Sample 3) is higher than those of other obtained products, which are mainly attributed to its hollows-interior, porous-exterior, and the large amount of Au. The method for the large-sized porous metal nanostructures has been established for the first time and shows the potential of this route to expand the scope of fabricating porous metal nanostructures.

Project description:Self-replicating gene drives that can spread deleterious alleles through animal populations have been promoted as a much needed but controversial 'silver bullet' for controlling invasive alien species. Homing-based drives comprise an endonuclease and a guide RNA (gRNA) that are replicated during meiosis via homologous recombination. However, their efficacy for controlling wild populations is threatened by inherent polymorphic resistance and the creation of resistance alleles via non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ)-mediated DNA repair. We used stochastic individual-based models to identify realistic gene-drive strategies capable of eradicating vertebrate pest populations (mice, rats and rabbits) on islands. One popular strategy, a sex-reversing drive that converts heterozygous females into sterile males, failed to spread and required the ongoing deployment of gene-drive carriers to achieve eradication. Under alternative strategies, multiplexed gRNAs could overcome inherent polymorphic resistance and were required for eradication success even when the probability of NHEJ was low. Strategies causing homozygotic embryonic non-viability or homozygotic female sterility produced high probabilities of eradication and were robust to NHEJ-mediated deletion of the DNA sequence between multiplexed endonuclease recognition sites. The latter two strategies also purged the gene drive when eradication failed, therefore posing lower long-term risk should animals escape beyond target islands. Multiplexing gRNAs will be necessary if this technology is to be useful for insular extirpation attempts; however, precise knowledge of homing rates will be required to design low-risk gene drives with high probabilities of eradication success.

Project description:The optical and electronic properties of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have been explored extensively due to their increasing demand in photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. But little is known about the growth kinetics of these nanocrystals. In this work, we demonstrate an interesting new mechanism using the method of arrested growth and precipitation to isolate the intermediates. We find that growth is driven by oriented attachment competing with the surface energetics. Hence, we observe a rare example of self-assembly driven dimensional growth characterized by suitable surface passivation that competes with the exposed surface facets through dimensional growth. This provides an explanation for not only the lack of size and shape tunability but also the emergence of a cubic shape rather than commonly observed spherical shapes in nanocrystals. Additionally, we find that this also corresponds to the observed phase transitions as well as correlating with pathways of decay of the photoluminescence spectra.

Project description:LiMnPO4 is an attractive cathode material for the next-generation high power Li-ion batteries, due to its high theoretical specific capacity (170 mA h g(-1)) and working voltage (4.1 V vs Li(+)/Li). However, two main drawbacks prevent the practical use of LiMnPO4: its low electronic conductivity and the limited lithium diffusion rate, which are responsible for the poor rate capability of the cathode. The electronic resistance is usually lowered by coating the particles with carbon, while the use of nanosize particles can alleviate the issues associated with poor ionic conductivity. It is therefore of primary importance to develop a synthetic route to LiMnPO4 nanocrystals (NCs) with controlled size and coated with a highly conductive carbon layer. We report here an effective surface etching process (using LiPF6) on colloidally synthesized LiMnPO4 NCs that makes the NCs dispersible in the aqueous glucose solution used as carbon source for the carbon coating step. Also, it is likely that the improved exposure of the NC surface to glucose facilitates the formation of a conductive carbon layer that is in intimate contact with the inorganic core, resulting in a high electronic conductivity of the electrode, as observed by us. The carbon coated etched LiMnPO4-based electrode exhibited a specific capacity of 118 mA h g(-1) at 1C, with a stable cycling performance and a capacity retention of 92% after 120 cycles at different C-rates. The delivered capacities were higher than those of electrodes based on not etched carbon coated NCs, which never exceeded 30 mA h g(-1). The rate capability here reported for the carbon coated etched LiMnPO4 nanocrystals represents an important result, taking into account that in the electrode formulation 80% wt is made of the active material and the adopted charge protocol is based on reasonable fast charge times.

Project description:Root growth and architecture are major components of plant nutrient and water use efficiencies and these traits are the matter of extensive genetic analysis in several crop species. Because root growth relies on exported assimilate from the shoot, and changes in assimilate supply are known to alter root architecture, we hypothesized (i) that the genetic bases of root growth could be intertwined with the genetic bases of shoot growth and (ii) that the link could be either positive, with alleles favouring shoot growth also favouring root growth, or negative, because of competition for assimilates. We tested these hypotheses using a quantitative genetics approach in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana and the Bay-0 × Shahdara recombinant inbred lines population. In accordance with our hypothesis, root and shoot growth traits were strongly correlated and most root growth quantitative trait loci (QTLs) colocalized with shoot growth QTLs with positive alleles originating from either the same or the opposite parent. In order to identify regions that could be responsible for root growth independently of the shoot, we generated new variables either based on root to shoot ratios, residuals of root to shoot correlations or coordinates of principal component analysis. These variables showed high heritability allowing genetic analysis. They essentially all yielded similar results pointing towards two regions involved in the root--shoot balance. Using Heterogeneous Inbred Families (a kind of near-isogenic lines), we validated part of the QTLs present in these two regions for different traits. Our study thus highlights the difficulty of disentangling intertwined genetic bases of root and shoot growth and shows that this difficulty can be overcome by using simple statistical tools.
