A deficiency in hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) activity leads to overproduction of uric acid. According to the degree of enzymatic deficiency, a large spectrum of neurologic features can also be observed, ranging from mild or no neurologic involvement to complete Lesch-Nyhan disease.
