Bis(2,2'-bipyridine-?N,N')(croconato-?O,O')nickel(II).

ABSTRACT: The title compound, [Ni(C(5)O(5))(C(10)H(8)N(2))(2)], lies across a crystallographic twofold axis, around which two 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bipy) ligands are arranged in a propeller manner. The local geometry of the NiN(4)O(2) coordination core basically adopts an octa-hedral geometry. The mol-ecular twofold axis is along the direction of the mol-ecular dipole moment, and the complex is packed with its dipole moment alternately along the +b and -b directions. The crystal structure is stabilized by inter-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bonds.

Project description:The title compound, [Ni(C(4)H(2)O(4))(C(10)H(8)N(2))(2)]·7.34H(2)O, was obtained by crystallization from an aqueous ethano-lic reaction mixture containing nickel(II) acetate, maleic acid, bipyridine, sodium hydroxide and ammonia. The asymmetric unit contains one independent complex mol-ecule and 7.34 water mol-ecules occupying eight crystallographically independent positions. Two of these water molecules are disordered. The nickel(II) atom is coordinated in a distorted octa-hedral geometry by two O atoms from one carboxyl-ate group of the maleato ligand and by four N atoms from two 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) ligands. The water mol-ecules, along with the O atoms of the uncoordinated carboxyl-ate group, form an extended hydro-philic three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded system with large cavities in which the hydro-phobic bipy ligands are located. One H atom of the maleate ligand is involved in a weak hydrogen bond of the C-H⋯O type. Stacking inter-actions between the pyridyl rings of the bipy ligands [centroid-centroid distance = 3.549 (15) Å] lead to the formation of pairs of complex mol-ecules.

Project description:In the title compound, [Cu(NO(3))(C(10)H(8)N(2))(2)]ClO(4), the five-coordinated Cu(II) atom has a distorted square-pyramidal CuN(4)O environment; the O atom is in the axial position whereas the N atoms from two bipyridine (bipy) ligands are in the equatorial plane. In the crystal, mol-ecules are assembled by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonding and π-π inter-actions between bipy groups [centroid-centroid distances = 3.7686 (16) and 3.7002 (16) Å] into a three-dimensional network. The nitrite anion is equally disordered over two sets of sites.

The 2,2'-dpa ligand acts as a bridge between neighbouring Ni(II) atoms, forming one-dimensional coordination polymers along [100]. The coordinated water mol-ecules form hydrogen bonds to the carboxyl-ate O atoms of 2,2'-dpa within the same coordination polymer, and one O-H⋯π inter-action is also formed to 2,2'-dpa.

Each Ni(II) atom is chelated by two oxalate ligands and one 2,2'-bipyridine, forming a slightly distorted octa-hedral geometry. A partially overlapped arrangement between the bipyridine ligands and the aromatic ring of the sulfoisophthalate group of adjacent anions is observed; the distance (3.357 Å) indicates π-π stacking. Hydrogen bonds, with the water mol-ecules serving as hydrogen-bond donors, lead to a three-dimensional network architecture.
