ABSTRACT: Safflorite, a naturally occurring cobalt-nickel-iron diarsenide (Co,Ni,Fe)As(2), possesses the marcasite-type structure, with cations (M = Co + Ni + Fe) at site symmetry 2/m and As anions at m. The MAs(6) octa-hedra share two edges, forming chains parallel to c. The chemical formula for safflorite should be expressed as (Co,Ni,Fe)As(2), rather than the end-member format CoAs(2), as its structure stabilization requires the simultaneous inter-action of the electronic states of Co, Ni, and Fe with As(2) (2-) dianions.

Different Phenomena in Magnetic/Electrical Properties of Co(II) and Ni(II) Isomorphous MOFs.

Project description:Two unprecedented and stable metal-organic frameworks, {[Co2(H2O)2(L)(OH)]·2.5H2O·0.5DMF} n (1) and {[Ni2(H2O)2(L)(OH)]·1.75H2O} n (2), have been synthesized (H3L = 5-(5-carboxy-pyridin-3-yloxy)-isophthalic acid, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide). Structural analysis shows that 1 and 2 are heteronuclear isomorphous, possessing a three-dimensional (3D) (4,8)-connected flu/fluorite topological framework formed through the interconnection of tetranuclear butterfly {M4(COO)6(OH)2} clusters and the ligands. Although the frameworks of these two compounds are similar, their magnetic properties are different. Compound 1 exhibits an antiferromagnetic interaction in the high-temperature region, while 2 shows a weak ferromagnetic interaction in the whole-temperature region. Furthermore, considering the presence of hydroxyl groups and water molecules in the frameworks, we tested their proton conductivity. The efficient proton transfer pathway in the framework endowed 1 and 2 with excellent proton conductivities of 9.07 × 10-5 and 1.29 × 10-4 S·cm-1 at 363 K and 98% relative humidity (RH), respectively.

Understanding Coke Deposition Vis-a-Vis DRM Activity over Magnesia-Alumina Supported Ni-Fe, Ni-Co, Ni-Ce, and Ni-Sr Catalysts.

Project description:The catalytic conversion of CH4 and CO2 into H2-rich syngas is known as the dry reforming of methane (DRM). The dissociation of CH4 over active sites, coupled with the oxidation or polymerization of CH4-x (x = 1-4), plays a crucial role in determining in determining the DRM product yield and coke deposition. Herein, a series of bimetallic-supported catalysts are prepared by the dispersion of Ni-M (M = Ce, Co, Fe, and Sr) over 60 wt% MgO-40 wt% Al2O3 (60Mg40Al) support. Catalysts are tested for DRM and characterized with XRD, surface area and porosity, temperature-programmed reduction/desorption, UV-VIS-Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry. 2.5Ni2.5Sr/60Mg40Al and 2.5Ni2.5Fe/60Mg40Al, and 2.5Ni2.5Ce/60Mg40Al and 2.5Ni2.5Co/60Mg40Al have similar CO2 interaction profiles. The 2.5Ni2.5Sr/60Mg40Al catalyst nurtures inert-type coke, whereas 2.5Ni2.5Fe/60Mg40Al accelerates the deposition of huge coke, which results in catalytic inferiority. The higher activity over 2.5Ni2.5Ce/60Mg40Al is due to the instant lattice oxygen-endowing capacity for oxidizing coke. Retaining a high DRM activity (54% H2-yield) up to 24 h even against a huge coke deposition (weight loss 46%) over 2.5Ni2.5Co/60Mg40Al is due to the timely diffusion of coke far from the active sites or the mounting of active sites over the carbon nanotube.

Advanced Ultrathin RuPdM (M = Ni, Co, Fe) Nanosheets Electrocatalyst Boosts Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the most significant reactions in the electrolysis water process, and electrocatalysts which possess high mass activity and excellent stability are the most important driving factors to improve the efficiency of HER. As for the efficient commercially electrocatalyst, Pt/C is limited in development because of its high cost. Therefore, the study of non-Pt high-efficiency catalysts is particularly important at this moment. Here, we creatively report for the first time a kind of RuPdM (M= Ni, Co, Fe) ultrathin nanosheets (NSs), which exhibit extraordinary electrochemical properties for HER under alkaline conditions. The overpotential of optimized trimetallic Ru38Pd34Ni28 ultrathin NSs is only 20 mV (10 mA cm-2), and the mass activity reaches 6.15 A mg-1 noble metal at -0.07 V vs RHE. It can be compared to Pt-based electrocatalysts, which have the highest mass activity currently reported. The durability tests also prove that the stability of the electrocatalyst is outstanding. DFT calculations disclose that the flexible modulation of electronic structures of RuPd ultrathin NSs is achieved by utilizing the additional 3d transition metals Fe, Co, and Ni. In particular, the Ni-3d bands act as the continuous electron-supply center for Ru to ensure an efficient electron transfer toward the adsorbates. Meanwhile, the stable Pd sites are critical for coupling the O-2p? orbital in the initial H2O splitting with a facile barrier. This work will open up a new era of non-Pt materials for alkaline hydrogen evolution toward practical application.

Preferential Co substitution on Ni sites in Ni-Fe oxide arrays enabling large-current-density alkaline oxygen evolution.

Project description:Developing low-cost and high-activity transition metal oxide electrocatalysts for an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a large current density is highly demanded for industrial application and remains a big challenge. Herein, we report vertically aligned cobalt doped Ni-Fe based oxide (Co-NiO/Fe2O3) arrays as a robust OER electrocatalyst via a simple method combining hydrothermal reaction with heat treatment. Density functional theory calculation and XRD Rietveld refinement reveal that Co preferentially occupies the Ni sites compared to Fe in the Ni-Fe based oxides. The electronic structures of the Co-NiO/Fe2O3 could be further optimized, leading to the improvement of the intrinsic electronic conductivity and d-band center energy level and the decrease in the reaction energy barrier of the rate-determining step for the OER, thus accelerating its OER electrocatalytic activity. The Co-NiO/Fe2O3 nanosheet arrays display state-of-the-art OER activities at a large current density for industrial demands among Fe-Co-Ni based oxide electrocatalysts, which only require an ultra-low overpotential of 230 mV at a high current density of 500 mA cm-2, and exhibit superb durability at 500 mA cm-2 for at least 300 h without obvious degradation. The Co-NiO/Fe2O3 nanosheet arrays also have a small Tafel slope of 33.9 mV dec-1, demonstrating fast reaction kinetics. This work affords a simple and effective method to design and construct transition metal oxide based electrocatalysts for efficient water oxidation.

Co-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni Oxide as a Highly Efficient Thermoelectric High-Entropy Alloy.

Project description:Among the existing materials for heat conversion, high-entropy alloys are of great interest due to the tunability of their functional properties. Here, we aim to produce single-phase high-entropy oxides composed of Co-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni-O through spark plasma sintering (SPS), testing their thermoelectric (TE) properties. This material was successfully obtained before via a different technique, which requires a very long processing time. Hence, the main target of this work is to apply spark plasma sintering, a much faster and scalable process. The samples were sintered in the temperature range of 1200-1300 °C. Two main phases were formed: rock salt-structured Fm3̅m and spinel-structured Fd3̅m. Comparable transport properties were achieved via the new approach: the highest value of the Seebeck coefficient reached -112.6 μV/K at room temperature, compared to -150 μV/K reported before; electrical properties at high temperatures are close to the properties of the single-phase material (σ = 0.2148 S/cm, σ ≈ 0.2009 S/cm reported before). These results indicate that SPS can be successfully applied to produce highly efficient TE high-entropy alloys in a fast and scalable way. Further optimization is needed for the production of single-phase materials, which are expected to exhibit an even better TE functionality.

Influence of interconfigurational electronic States On Fe, Co, Ni-silicene materials selection for spintronics.

Project description:Growth through controlled adsorption of ferromagnetic elements such as Fe, Co and Ni on two-dimensional silicene provides an alternative route for silicon-based spintronics. Plane wave DFT calculations show that Fe, Co and Ni adatoms are strongly chemisorbed via strong sigma bonds, with adsorption energies (1.55 - 2.29 eV) that are two to six times greater compared to adsorption on graphene. All adatoms adsorb more strongly at the hole site than at the atom site, with Ni adsorbing strongest. Of the dimer configurations investigated, the hole--hole, b-atom--hole, vertically stacked at hole, vertically stacked at b-atom and bridge sites were found to be stable. The Co and Ni dimers are most stable when adsorbed in the hole-hole configuration while the Fe dimer is most stable when adsorbed in the atom-hole configuration. Metal-to-silicene and interconfigurational s-to-d electron transfer processes underpin the trends observed in adsorption energies and magnetic moments for both adatoms and dimers. Adsorption of these metals induces a small band gap at the Dirac Cone. In particular Co adatom adsorption at the hole site induces the largest spin-polarized band gaps of 0.70 eV (spin-up) and 0.28 eV (spin-down) making it a potential material candidate for spintronics applications.

Tuneable Giant Magnetocaloric Effect in (Mn,Fe)₂(P,Si) Materials by Co-B and Ni-B Co-Doping.

Project description:The influence of Co (Ni) and B co-doping on the structural, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of (Mn,Fe) 2 (P,Si) compounds is investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry, magnetic and direct temperature change measurements. It is found that Co (Ni) and B co-doping is an effective approach to tune both the Curie temperature and the thermal hysteresis of (Mn,Fe) 2 (P,Si) materials without losing either the giant magnetocaloric effect or the positive effect of the B substitution on the mechanical stability. An increase in B concentration leads to a rapid decrease in thermal hysteresis, while an increase in the Co or Ni concentration hardly changes the thermal hysteresis of the (Mn,Fe) 2 (P,Si) compounds. However, the Curie temperature decreases slowly as a function of the Co or Ni content, while it increases dramatically for increasing B concentration. Hence, the co-substitution of Fe and P by Co (Ni) and B, respectively, offers a new control parameter to adjust the Curie temperature and reduce the thermal hysteresis of the (Mn,Fe) 2 (P,Si) materials.

Project description:The title complex, dicarbonyl-3?(2)C-(?(3)-3,6-dimethyl-3,6-diaza-octane-1,8-dithiol-ato-1:2:3?(7)S:S,N,N',S':S,S')(?(2)-3,6-di-methyl-3,6-diaza-octane-1,8-dithiol-ato-1:2?(5)S,N,N',S':S)-1,2-diiron(II)-3-nickel(0) [Fe(2)Ni(C(8)H(18)N(2)S(2))(2)(CO)(2)], is the second example showing M(?-SR)(2)Ni(0)(CO)(2) coordination (M = any metal atom). Both Fe(II) ions are five-coordinated in distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometries by two N atoms and three S atoms. The Ni atom is four-coordinated in a distorted tetra-hedral geometry by two S atoms and two carbonyl ligands. One of the 3,6-dimethyl-3,6-diaza-octane-1,8-dithiol-ate ligands is disordered, the major component having a refined occupancy of 0.873?(2). The Fe?Fe distance is 3.0945?(3)Å and the Ni?Fe distance is 2.8505?(3)?Å.

Optical, Structural, and Crystal Defects Characterizations of Dip Synthesized (Fe-Ni) Co-Doped ZnO Thin Films.

Project description:Sol-gel technique is used to synthesize as-grown zinc oxide (ZnO) and iron-nickel (Fe-Ni) co-doped ZnO thin films deposited on glass substrates using dip coating technique. The structural properties and crystal imperfections of as-prepared thin films are investigated. We performed the structural analysis of films using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD analysis reveal that the as-prepared films exhibit wurtzite structure. Furthermore, XRD-line profile analysis is performed to study the correlation between structural properties and imperfections of the nanocomposite thin films. The crystallite size and microstrains parameters are predicted using the Williamson-Hall method. We found that the crystallites size increases as the co-doped (Fe-Ni) concentration is increased. However, microstrains of the nanocomposite films decreases as (Fe-Ni) concentration is increased. The optical properties of the (Fe-Ni) co-doped nanocomposite films are investigated by performing UV-Vis (250 nm-700 nm) spectrophotometer measurements. We found that as the (Fe-Ni) concentration level is steadily increased, transmittance of the undoped ZnO thin films is decreased. Remarkably, refractive index of undoped ZnO thin films is found to exhibit values extending from 1.55 to1.88 that would increase as (Fe-Ni) concentration is increased.
