ABSTRACT: In the title compound, [CuCl(2)(C(14)H(12)N(4))(2)]·3.33H(2)O, the Cu(II) atom is coordinated by two chelating 3-methyl-4-phenyl-5-(2-pyrid-yl)-1,2,4-triazole ligands and two chloride anions in a distorted octa-hedral geometry with a CuN(2)N(') (2)Cl(2) chromophore. The Cu atom is located on an inversion center. Two uncoordinated water mol-ecules lie on threefold rotation axes with disordered H atoms. Two hydrogen bonds are formed between the water mol-ecules, and another between water and a chlorido ligand.

Project description:The title coordination polymer, [CuCl(2)(C(8)H(8)N(4))(2)](n), arose from a layer-separated diffusion synthesis at room temperature. The Cu atom (site symmetry ) is coordinated by two chloride ions and four N atoms (two from triazole rings and two from pyridyl rings) in a distorted trans-CuCl(2)N(4) octa-hedral arrangement. The bridging 1-(4-pyridylmeth-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole ligands [dihedral angle between the triazole and pyridine rings = 68.08?(8)°] result in a two-dimensional 4(4) sheet structure in the crystal.

The conformations of the two crystallographically independent mol-ecules are slightly different: in A, the Cu?Cu separation is 4.174?(9)?Å and the dihedral angle between the triazole and phenyl rings is 74.23?(11)°; these values are 4.137?(9)?Å and 68.58?(13)°, respectively, in B. In each mol-ecule, the copper(II) ions have a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal coordination geometry with a CuCl(2)NN'N'' chromophore. The crystal packing exhibits weak inter-molecular C-H?Cl inter-actions.
