N-[(2,4-Dimethyl-phen-yl)carbamothio-yl]-2-methyl-benzamide.

ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(17)H(18)N(2)OS, adopts a trans-cis geometry of the thio-urea group which is stabilized by intra-molecular hydrogen bonds between the O atom of the carbonyl group and the H atom of the thio-amide group. A C-H?S intramolecular hydrogen bond is also present. In the crystal structure, mol-ecules are linked by inter-molecular N-H?S hydrogen bonds to form centrosymmetric dimers.

The amide group is twisted by 28.1?(3) and 76.3?(2)° out of the planes of the 4-methyl-phenyl and 2,4-dimethyl-phenyl rings, respectively. In the crystal, inter-molecular N-H?O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into chains running along the c axis. The crystal studied was hemihedrally twinned with a twin law resulting from a twofold rotation about the a axis.

The aniline and benzoyl rings are almost coplanar, making a dihedral angle of 4.9 (3)°. The plane of the amide group makes an angle of 61.3 (3)° with the aniline ring and 58.3 (3)° with the benzoyl ring. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are linked by N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into chains running along the b axis.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(20)H(24)N(2)OS, consists of two crystallographically independent mol-ecules. In each mol-ecule, an intra-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond forms an S(6) ring motif. The dihedral angles between the terminal benzene rings in the two mol-ecules are 75.52 (7) and 42.80 (7)°. In the crystal, inter-molecular N-H⋯S inter-actions link the mol-ecules into a chain along the c axis.

Furthermore, the conformation of the C=O group with respect to the methyl substituent in the 2-methyl-phenyl ring is syn, as has also been observed in related structures. The amide group makes dihedral angles of 50.3 (3) and 64.6 (3)° with the 2-methyl-phenyl and 2,6-dimethyl-phenyl rings, respectively, while the angle between the planes of the two rings is 14.26 (7)°. The mol-ecules are packed into chains via N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. An intramolecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bond is also observed.

Project description:The synthesis of the title compound, C(21)H(18)N(2)OS, involves the reaction of 3-methyl-benzoyl chloride with potassium thio-cyanate in dry acetone followed by condensation of the 3-methyl-benzoyl isothio-cyanate with diphenyl-amine. The carbonyl [C-O = 1.215?(2)?Å] and thio-carbonyl [C-S = 1.6721?(17)?Å] distances indicate that these correspond to double bonds. The short C-N bonds at the center of the mol-ecule reveal the effects of resonance in this part of the mol-ecule. The conformation of the mol-ecule with respect to the thio-carbonyl and carbonyl groups is twisted. The 3-methyl-phenyl and two phenyl rings are also twisted, with dihedral angles of 75.67?(9) and 14.91?(9)°. The phenyl rings are rotated out of the mean plane of the N-C-S-N atoms by 66.87?(8) and 78.40?(9)°. Pairs of mol-ecules are linked into centrosymmetric dimers via inter-molecular N-H?S inter-actions and a C-H?O link also occurs. The dimers are stacked along the a axis.
