Bis[4-(2-benzyl-idenepropyl-idene-amino)phen-yl] ether.

ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(32)H(28)N(2)O, is a flexible Schiff base displaying a trans configuration across the C=N double bond. It was prepared in high yield by condensation of ?-methyl-cinnamaldehyde and bis-(4-amino-phen-yl) ether in methanol at room temperature. The sample, with pseudo-ortho-rhom-bic cell parameters, exhibited merohedral twinning by rotation 180° around a*, with a refined twin domain fraction of 0.722?(1). The elongated shape of the elementary cell corresponds to the shape and direction of the mol-ecules. The dihedral angle between the O-linked aromatic rings is 57.86?(8)°.

Project description:The title compound, C(26)H(24)N(2)O(3), was synthesized by reduction of the corresponding Schiff base. The mol-ecule does not possess crystallographic or non-crystallographic symmetry. The dihedral angle between the oxygen-bridged benzene rings is 67.98 (8)°. The dihedral angle between the planes of the central benzene ring and the terminal phenol ring is 4.9 (2)°. Each half of the mol-ecule exhibits an imine E configuration. An intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond is present. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are linked into layers parallel to the ab plane via C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The whole mol-ecule of compound (2) is generated by twofold symmetry, with the ether O atom located on the twofold axis. Both compounds have intra-molecular ?-? inter-actions between terminal phenyl rings with centroid-centroid distances of 3.6214?(16) and 3.8027?(14)?Å in (1) and (2), respectively.
