ABSTRACT: The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(12)H(12)N(2), contains two half-mol-ecules related by an inversion center, the planes of their pyridine rings being oriented at a dihedral angle of 69.62?(4)°. In the crystal structure, a ?-? contact between the pyridine rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.895?(3)?Å] may stabilize the structure. A weak C-H?? inter-action is also found.

The CH(3) group trans to the I atom has a slightly elongated bond to Pt compared to the other CH(3) groups, indicating a difference in trans influence between iodine and the bipyridine ligand.

Project description:The metal site in the title compound [MnCl(2)(C(12)H(12)N(2))(2)]·2.5H(2)O has a distorted octa-hedral geometry, coordinated by four N atoms of two 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-dipyridine ligands and two Cl atoms. Two and a half water molecules of hydration per complex unit are observed in the crystal structure. The compounds extend along the c axis with O-H?Cl, O-H?O, C-H?Cl and C-H?O hydrogen bonds and ?-? inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance = 3.70?(2)?Å] contributing substanti-ally to the crystal packing.
