Catena-Poly[[(ethanol-?O)sodium(I)]-di-?-aqua-[(rac-2'-hydr-oxy-1,1'-binaphthyl-2-yl phosphato-?O)sodium]-tri-?-aqua].

ABSTRACT: The asymmetric unit of the polymeric title compound, [Na(2)(C(20)H(13)O(5)P)(C(2)H(6)O)(H(2)O)(5)](n), consists of two Na(I) ions, one 2'-hydr-oxy-1,1'-binaphthyl-2-yl phosphate anion, one ethanol ligand and five water molecules of crysallization. Each Na(I) ion has a distorted octa-hedral coordination geometry. The phosphate anion coordinates to one Na(I) ion and the ethanol mol-ecule coordinates to the other. The five water mol-ecules bridge the Na(I) ions, forming an inorganic chain structure along the b axis. The chains are connected by O-H?O hydrogen bonds into an organic-inorganic hybrid layer parallel to (001).

Project description:The title complex, [CoNa(CO5P)(H2O)5]n, was obtained by reacting sodium phosphono-formate with cobalt nitrate. The complex contains cobalt(II) and sodium ions, which are bridged by the O atoms of two aqua ligands. The Co(II) ion is octahedrally coordinated by three phosphonoformato ligands (one bi- and the other monodentate) and by two O atoms from the bridging aqua ligands. The sodium cation is hexa-coordinated by six O atoms from four bridging and two terminal aqua ligands. The complex mol-ecules are linked to give a three-dimensional structure by phosphono-formate ligands bridging Co(II) atoms and water mol-ecules establishing cobalt-sodium bridges. Project description:In the title coordination polymer, {[Sr(C2H5NO2)2(H2O)3]Br2} n , the Sr(2+) ion and one of the water mol-ecules are located on twofold rotation axes. The alkaline earth ion is nine-coordinated by three water O atoms and six O atoms of the carboxyl-ate groups of four glycine ligands, two in a chelating mode and two in a monodentate mode. The glycine mol-ecule exists in a zwitterionic form and bridges the cations into chains parallel to [001]. The Br(-) counter-anions are located between the chains. Inter-molecular hydrogen bonds are formed between the amino and carboxyl-ate groups of neighbouring glycine ligands, generating a head-to-tail sequence. Adjacent head-to-tail sequences are further inter-connected by inter-molecular N-H⋯Br hydrogen-bonding inter-actions into sheets parallel to (100). O-H⋯Br and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds involving the coordinating water mol-ecules are also present, consolidating the three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network.

Optical Stability of 1,1'-Binaphthyl Derivatives.

Project description:The racemization process of various 1,1'-binaphthyl derivatives is studied by quantum calculations. The preferred racemization pathway passes through a transition state belonging to the Ci symmetry group. The energy barrier for this process is independent of solvation, the electron-withdrawing/releasing power of substituents, or their ability to engage in H-bonds within the molecule. The primary factor is instead the substituent size. The barrier is thus reduced when the -OH groups of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol are replaced by H. There is a drop in the barrier also when the substituents are moved from the 2,2' positions to 6,6', where they will not come close to one another in the transition state. Upon removal of the peripheral aromatic rings of the binaphthyl system, the biphenyl system undergoes a facile racemization. It is concluded that the optimal means of improving optical stability of 1,1'-binaphthyl systems is the substitution of large bulky groups in the 2,2' positions.

Adjacent polyhedra share two O?O edges. The polymeric chains are linked into a three-dimensional network via O-H?O and O-H?N hydrogen bonds.
