Project description:The structure of the title compound, (NH4)[Cr(pydc)2] (pydc is pyridine-2,6-di-carboxyl-ate, C7H3NO4), has been determined from synchrotron data. The Cr(III) ion and the N atom of the ammonium cation are located on a crystallographic fourfold rotoinversion axis (-4). The Cr(III) cation is coordinated by four O atoms and the two N atoms of two meridional pydc ligands, displaying a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The Cr-N and Cr-O bond lengths are 1.9727?(15) and 1.9889?(9)?Å, respectively. The crystal structure is stabilized by inter-molecular hydrogen bonds involving the N-H groups of the ammonium cation and pyridine C-H groups as donors and the non-coordinating carbonyl O atoms as acceptors.

Project description:The structure of the title hybrid compound, (C6H16N2)[CrO4], has been determined from synchrotron data. The organic cation adopts a chair conformation. The inorganic CrO42- anion is slightly distorted owing to its involvement in N-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions with neighbouring trans-cyclo-hexane-1,2-di-ammonium cations, whereby the two Cr-O bonds to the O atoms acting as acceptor atoms for two hydrogen bonds are slightly longer than the other two Cr-O bonds for which only one acceptor inter-action per O atom is observed. In the crystal, cations and anions are packed into layers parallel to (001), held together through the aforementioned N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Project description:In the title mol-ecular salt [systematic name: 3-(5H-di-benzo[a,d]cyclo-hepten-5-yl-idene)-N,N-dimethyl-1-propanaminium 2-hy-droxy-benzoate], C(20)H(22)N(+)·C(7)H(5)O(3) (-), the benzene rings of the cyclo-benzaprinium cation are inclined with a dihedral angle of 61.66 (7)°. An intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond occurs within the salicylate anion, generating an S(6) ring. In the crystal, the cation and anion are linked by an N-H⋯O inter-action.

Project description:Polycrystalline tris-odium vanadium(III) nitridotriphosphate, Na3V(PO3)3N, was prepared by thermal nitridation of a mixture of NaPO3 and V2O5. The title compound is isotypic with Na3Al(PO3)3N. In the crystal, the P-atom and the three O-atom sites are on general positions, whereas the Na-, V- and N-atom sites are located on threefold rotation axes. The P atom is coordinated by three O atoms and one N atom in form of a slightly distorted tetra-hedron. Three PO3N tetra-hedra build up a nitridotriphosphate group, (PO3)3N, by sharing a common N atom. The V atom is coordinated by six O atoms in form of a slightly distorted octa-hedron. The Na(+) ions occupy three crystallographically distinct sites. One Na(+) ion is situated in an irregular polyhedral coordination environment composed of six O atoms and one N atom, while the other two Na(+) cations are surrounded by six and nine O atoms, respectively.

Project description:The structure of the title compound, [(NH4)0.8K0.2][Cr(C5H7NO4)2] (C5H7NO4 is methyl-iminodi-acetate; mida), has been determined from synchrotron data. The Cr(III) atom is located on a centre of symmetry and is coordinated by two N atoms and four O atoms of two facially arranged tridentate mida ligands, displaying a slightly distorted octa-hedral coordination environment. The Cr-N and mean Cr-O bond lengths are 2.0792 (14) and 1.958 (14) Å, respectively. The cation site is located on a twofold rotation axis and shows occupational disorder, being occupied by ammonium and potassium cations in a 0.8:0.2 ratio. In the crystal, inter-molecular hydrogen bonds involving the N-H groups of the ammonium cation as donor and the two non-coordinating O atoms of the carboxyl-ate group as acceptor groups consolidate the three-dimensional packing.

Deprotonation of the carb-oxy-lic acid group occurred on the phenolic hy-droxy group. The diaza-cyclo-hexane ring adopts a chair conformation. Intra-molecular O-H?O and inter-molecular C-H?O and N-H?O hydrogen bonds are observed. The N-H?O hydrogen bonds are bifurcated at the H atom and connect the cinnarizinium and 3,5-dinitro-salicylate ions together. Inter-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bonds connect the components into layers perpendicular to the crystallographic a axis.

Project description:IntroductionChronic salicylate toxicity is an uncommon, potentially life-threatening poisoning that requires high clinical suspicion in order to make the diagnosis. We created a simulation case that challenges learners to analyze case information, construct a differential diagnosis of an elevated anion gap metabolic acidosis with respiratory alkalosis, and initiate treatment for this toxicity.MethodsThe simulation case was designed for emergency medicine residents and pediatric emergency medicine fellows. The activity began with a brief overview of the monitors, equipment, and simulation experience. For interns, a team of two learners comanaged the case; for senior learners, the case was managed solo. The learners had 15 minutes to complete a focused history and physical exam, request and interpret labs and studies, and initiate specific treatments. The simulation was followed by a 15-minute facilitated debrief session that included an overview of key learning points and learner performance based on an evaluation checklist.ResultsResidents completed a postparticipation questionnaire consisting of six questions rated on a 5-point Likert scale. Overall, residents reported a high degree of satisfaction with the simulation experience. The case and debrief were effective in meeting the educational objectives and proved to be an effective modality to fill this educational gap.DiscussionThis simulation exercise was effective in showing residents the uncommon presentation of chronic salicylate toxicity. Learners reported increased confidence in recognizing and managing this ingestion. The simulation experience closed an identified education gap and provided an experiential learning opportunity that accomplished the targeted learning objectives.

Project description:Synchrotron radiation is the most versatile way to explore biological materials in different states: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, solution, colloids and multiscale architectures. Steady improvements in instrumentation have made synchrotrons the most flexible intense X-ray source. The wide range of applications of synchrotron radiation is commensurate with the structural diversity and complexity of the molecules and macromolecules that form the collection of substrates investigated by glycoscience. The present review illustrates how synchrotron-based experiments have contributed to our understanding in the field of structural glycobiology. Structural characterization of protein-carbohydrate interactions of the families of most glycan-interacting proteins (including glycosyl transferases and hydrolases, lectins, antibodies and GAG-binding proteins) are presented. Examples concerned with glycolipids and colloids are also covered as well as some dealing with the structures and multiscale architectures of polysaccharides. Insights into the kinetics of catalytic events observed in the crystalline state are also presented as well as some aspects of structure determination of protein in solution.
