ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(6)H(7)N(3), has an ethyl-ene group connecting an imidazole ring and a -CN group. These groups are in a staggered conformation. The shortest inter-molecular contact is found between the imidazole N atom and a -CH(2)- group of a neighboring mol-ecule.

Project description:In the title compound, C18H12N4O2, which has a delocalized D-π-A electronic structure, the dihedral angles between the central benzene ring and the planes of the pendant imidazole and nitro-benzene rings are 37.65 (9) and 4.96 (7)°, respectively. In the centrosymmetric crystal structure, mol-ecules are linked by weak C-H⋯O inter-actions, generating [001] C(6) chains.

Inter-molecular N-H?S hydrogen bonding results in the formation of a linear chain in the c-axis direction.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C11H8N2O2, contains two independent mol-ecules (A and B). Each mol-ecule is build up from fused five- and six-membered rings with the former linked to a cyano-ethyl group. The indoline ring and two carbonyl O atoms of each mol-ecule are nearly coplanar, with the largest deviations from the mean planes being 0.0198 (9) (mol-ecule A) and 0.0902 (9) Å (mol-ecule B), each by a carbonyl O atom. The fused ring system is nearly perpendicular to the mean plane passing through the cyano-ethyl chains, as indicated by the dihedral angles between them of 69.72 (9) (mol-ecule A) and 69.15 (9)° (mol-ecule B). In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯O and π-π [inter-centroid distance between inversion-related indoline (A) rings = 3.6804 (7) Å] inter-actions into a double layer that stacks along the a-axis direction.

The pyrrolidine ring and the fused five-membered pyrrolidine ring of the oxindole moiety exhibit twisted conformations. The amide N atom is involved in both intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonding, having a bifurcated character. The mol-ecular structure is characterized by an intra-molecular N-H?O hydrogen bond, which generates an S(7) ring motif while an inter-molecular N-H?O hydrogen bond links the organic and solvent water mol-ecules. In the crystal, N-H?N hydrogen bonds generate a zigzag chain running parallel to c-axis direction. The H atoms of the solvent water mol-ecule were not located.

The complex mol-ecule lies about a crystallographic inversion centre. The Zn(II) atom exhibits a distorted tetra-hedral coordination geometry defined by two imidazole N atoms and two Cl atoms. O-H?Cl hydrogen bonding between the lattice water mol-ecules and the terminal Cl atoms of the mol-ecule lead to a two-dimensional structure extending parallel to (100).
