ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(14)H(10)O(4)·H(2)O, isolated from the roots of Calophyllum membranaceum, the xanthene ring system is almost planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.008?Å). In the crystal structure, inter-molecular O-H?O and O-H?(O,O) hydrogen bonds connect the mol-ecules.

Project description:The Schiff base mol-ecule of the title compound, C(15)H(14)N(2)O(4)·H(2)O, adopts a trans configuration with respect to the C=N double bond; the Schiff base itself is almost planar (r.m.s. deviation for all non-H atoms = 0.040 Å). The amido N atom is the hydrogen-bond donor to the water mol-ecule, which is the hydrogen-bond donor to the hydr-oxy groups of two neighboring mol-ecules. One of the hydroxyl groups acts as an intra-molecular and the other as an inter-molecular hydrogen-bond donor.

Further O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds assemble these rings through R(6) (6)(18) rings, giving rise to infinite helical chains arranged around the b axis. These helical chains are assembled by offset π-π stacking inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance = 3.6432 (8) Å] between the aromatic rings of neigboring chains, forming a supra-molecular network.

In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked into a three-dimensional network by strong and weak O-H?O and strong N-H?O hydrogen bonds. The hydr-oxy H atom deviates from the 4-hydr-oxy-3-methoxy-phenyl mean plane by 0.319?(2)?Å, probably due to the involvement of this H atom in the O-H?O hydrogen bond. The weak O-H?O hydrogen bond is involved in a bifurcated hydrogen bond with R(1) (2)(4) motif. A weak C-H?? inter-action is also present.

The N-tert-butyl-carboxamide substituent is equatorial. The 3?-hydr-oxy H atom and one H atom of the water mol-ecule are disordered over two positions with equal occupancies. In the crystal structure, O-H?O hydrogen bonds between the 3?-hydr-oxy groups of neighbouring mol-ecules form dimers in the bc plane and these dimers are stacked along the a axis by additional O-H?O hydrogen bonds involving the water mol-ecules. The steric effect of the bulky tert-butyl substituent in the carboxamide chain precludes hydrogen-bond formation by the N-H group.
