ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(4)H(2)INO(2)S, was synthesized by nitration of iodo-thio-phene with acetyl nitrate. The molecule is essentially planar, withthe nitro group tilted by 1.78?(19)° and the iodine atom displaced by 0.0233?(2)?Å with respect to the thiophene ring. In the crystal structure, adjacent mol-ecules are linked through weak I?O inter-actions [3.039?(2)Å], forming chains extending along the b axis.

Project description:The title compound, C11H8N2O3S, shows two mol-ecules per asymmetric unit, with the dihedral angles between the benzene and thio-phene rings of 13.53 (6) and 8.50 (5)° being a notable difference between them. An intra-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen-bond in each mol-ecule generates an S(6) ring motif. The crystal packing shows no classical hydrogen bonds with the mol-ecules being packed to form weak C-H⋯O and C-H⋯S inter-actions leading to R 2 (2)(9) and R 4 (4)(25) rings which are edge-shared, giving layers parallel to (010).

Project description:In the crystal structure of the title compound, C28H36I2S3, a terthio-phene monomer, the central thio-phene unit is arranged anti-coplanar to the two outer thio-phene rings. There are two crystallographically independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit, which show different conformations. In one mol-ecule, the dihedral angles between the inner and the two outer thiophene rings are 15.7 (3) and 3.47 (3)°, whereas these values are 4.2 (3) and 11.3 (3)° for the second mol-ecule. Differences are also found in the arrangement of the hexyl chains: in one of the two molecules, both chains are nearly in plane to the central moiety, whereas in the second molecule, only one chain is in plane and the other one is nearly perpendicular to the central moiety. Some of the C atoms are disordered and were refined using a split model with occupancy ratios of 0.65:0.35 and 0.70:0.30 in the two mol-ecules.

In the crystal, inter-molecular N-H⋯N and C-H⋯O inter-actions lead to the formation of a supra-molecular chain extending along the c-axis direction.

In the crystal, the mol-ecules form layers that are linked by ?-? stacking inter-actions between the thio-phene and benzene rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.7089?(12) and 3.6170?(12)?Å].

The crystal structure was refined as a two-component pseudo-merohedral twin using the twin law 001 0-10 100. The refined domain fractions are 0.516 (3) and 0.484 (3).
