(Z)-Ethyl 2-hydroxy-imino-2-(4-nitro-benz-yl)ethanoate.

ABSTRACT: The title mol-ecule, C(11)H(10)N(2)O(6), has a Z conformation about the C=N bond of the oxime unit. There are significant twists from planarity throughout the mol-ecule, the most significant being between the hydroxy-imino and ester groups which are effectively orthogonal with an N-C-C-O(carbon-yl) torsion angle of 91.4?(2)°. The crystal packing features oxime-benzoyl O-H?O contacts that lead to chains along [010] and C-H?O interactions also occur.

The methoxy-imino and ester residues are effectively coplanar with each other (r.m.s. deviation for the nine non-H atoms = 0.127 Å) and almost orthogonal [with dihedral angles of 99.44 (13) and -77.85 (13)°, respectively] to the carbonyl and nitro-phenyl groups which lie to either side of this central plane. The crystal structure is consolidated by C-H⋯O contacts.

Project description:In the title compound, C20H16N2O4, the mol-ecule adopts an E conformation about the N=C bond. There is an intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond forming an S(6) ring motif. The nitro-benzene and benz-yloxy rings are inclined to the central benzene ring by 4.34 (10) and 27.66 (11)°, respectively, and to one another by 31.40 (12)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked via C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming zigzag chains along [001]. Within the chains there are C-H⋯π inter-actions present. The chains are linked via π-π inter-actions [inter-centroid distance = 3.7048 (15) Å], forming slabs parallel to the bc plane.

Project description:The mol-ecule of the title compound, C(5)H(9)NO(3), is essentially planar [the maximum deviation for a non-H atom from the mean plane is 0.021 (3) Å] due to the π-conjugation of the hydroxy-imino and carbonyl groups, which are trans to each other; ab initio calculations in vacuo at the DFT (B3LYP/6-311G**++) level of theory confirmed that E conformer is indeed the lowest in energy. The packing in crystal structure is influenced by strong inter-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen-bonding inter-actions between oxime groups and also by π-stacking of the mol-ecules due to the carbonyl and oxime group orbital overlap [inter-planar distance between adjacent mol-ecules = 3.143 (4) Å]. Jointly, these factors afford infinite 6.32 Å thick mol-ecular sheets, where the plane of each mol-ecule is perpendicular to the plane of the sheet. Seen from above, the mol-ecules within the sheet are arranged in a herringbone pattern. Such sheets form a stack due to weak van der Waals inter-actions; the gap between adjacent sheets is 2.07 Å.
