N-(3-Chloro-phen-yl)maleamic acid.

ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(10)H(8)ClNO(3), the molecular conformation is stabilized by two intra-molecular hydrogen bonds. The first is a short O-H⋯O hydrogen bond within the maleamic acid unit and the second is a C-H⋯O hydrogen bond which connects the amide group with the phenyl ring. The maleamic acid unit is essentially planar, with an r.m.s. deviation of 0.044 Å, and makes a dihedral angle of 15.2 (1)° with the phenyl ring. In the crystal, inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into C(7) chains running [010].

Project description:In the mol-ecule of the title compound, C(10)H(7)ClN(2)O(5), the acyclic C=C double bond is cis configured. The C=O and O-H bonds of the acid group are in a relatively rare anti position to each other, due to the donation of intramolecular hydrogen bond to the amide by the carboxyl group. The nitro group is significantly twisted [dihedral angle = 66.9 (3)°] out of the plane of the remaining atoms, which are almost coplanar (r.m.s. deviation for non-H atoms except the nitro group = 0.202 Å). In the crystal, N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into zigzag chains running along the b axis.

The C=O and O-H bonds of the acid group are in the relatively rare anti position with respect to each other. This is an obvious consequence of the hydrogen bond donated to the amide carbonyl group. The central oxobutenoic acid core C(=O)-C=C-C-OH is twisted by 31.65 (6)° out of the plane of the 4-chloro-2-methyl-phenyl ring. An intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond occurs. In the crystal, N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into infinite chains running along the a axis.
