ABSTRACT: The title ion pair, C(18)H(19)N(2)O(+)·NO(3) (-), features an N-H?O hydrogen bond linking the cation to the anion. The morpholine portion adopts a chair conformation; the aromatic rings of the biphenyl-ene portion are twisted [torsion angles for the four atoms involving the ar-yl-aryl bond = 35.1?(2)-40.4?(2)°].

C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds involving both ring and methyl H atoms in addition to cation-cation C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds (ring H to cyano N) serve to link the sheets together. In each set of parallel layers, the cations and anions stack with short distances of 3.094 (2) (between aligned nitrate N and pyridine N atoms) and 3.057 (2) Å (between a nitrate O atom and the ring centroid). This motif is strikingly similar to the one that features in the isomeric salt 2-cyano-1-methyl-pyridinium nitrate.

Project description:The title compound, (C(2)H(8)N)(C(5)H(12)NO)[ZnCl(4)], was synthesized by hydro-thermal reaction of ZnCl(2) with 4-methyl-morpholine in a dimethyl-formamide solution. The asymmetric unit is composed of half a [ZnCl(4)](2-) anion, half a 4-methyl-morpholin-4-ium cation and half a dimethyl-ammonium cation, all located on mirror planes parallel to ac. All the amine H atoms are involved in inter-molecular N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, building up an infinite chain parallel to the c axis.
