TbNb(6)Sn(6): the first ternary compound from the rare earth-niobium-tin system.

ABSTRACT: The title compound, terbium hexa-niobium hexastannide, TbNb(6)Sn(6), is the first ternary compound from the rare earth-niobium-tin system. It has the HfFe(6)Ge(6) structure type, which can be analysed as an inter-growth of the Zr(4)Al(3) and CaCu(5) structures. All the atoms lie on special positions; their coordination geometries and site symmetries are: Tb (dodeca-hedron) 6/mmm; Nb (distorted icosa-hedron) 2mm; Sn (Frank-Caspar polyhedron, CN = 14-15) 6mm and m2; Sn (distorted icosa-hedron) m2. The structure contains a graphite-type Sn network, Kagome nets of Nb atoms, and Tb atoms alternating with Sn2 dumbbells in the channels.

Basic properties mapping of anodic oxides in the hafnium-niobium-tantalum ternary system.

Project description:A thin film combinatorial library deposited by co-sputtering of Hf, Nb and Ta was employed to characterise fundamental properties of the Hf-Nb-Ta system. Compositional mappings of microstructure and crystallography revealed similarities in alloy evolution. Distinct lattice distortion was observed upon addition of hexagonal Hf, leading to amorphisation of alloys containing more than 32 at.% Hf and less than 27 and 41 at.% Nb and Ta, respectively. Volta potential and open circuit potential mappings indicated minimal values for the highest Hf concentration. Localised anodisation of the library by scanning droplet cell microscopy revealed valve metal behaviour. Oxide formation factors above 2 nm V-1 were identified in compositional zones with high amounts of Nb and Ta. Fitting of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data allowed electrical permittivity and resistivity of mixed oxides to be mapped. Their compositional behaviours were attributed to characteristics of the parent metal alloys and particularities of the pure oxides. Mott-Schottky analysis suggested n-type semiconductor properties for all Hf-Nb-Ta oxides studied. Donor density and flat-band potential were mapped compositionally, and their variations were found to be related mainly to the Nb amount. Synergetic effects were identified in mappings of Hf-Nb-Ta parent metals and their anodic oxides.

Sn-Ag-Cu nanosolders: Melting behavior and phase diagram prediction in the Sn-rich corner of the ternary system.

Project description:Melting temperatures of Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) alloys in the Sn-rich corner are of interest for lead-free soldering. At the same time, nanoparticle solders with depressed melting temperatures close to the Sn-Pb eutectic temperature have received increasing attention. Recently, the phase stability of nanoparticles has been the subject of plenty of theoretical and empirical investigations. In the present study, SAC nanoparticles of various sizes have been synthesized via chemical reduction and the size dependent melting point depression of these particles has been specified experimentally. The liquidus projection in the Sn-rich corner of the ternary SAC system has also been calculated as a function of particle size, based on the CALPHAD-approach. The calculated melting temperatures were compared with those obtained experimentally and with values reported in the literature, which revealed good agreement. The model also predicts that with decreasing particle size, the eutectic composition shifts towards the Sn-rich corner.

Rare-earth vs. heavy metal pigments and their colors from first principles.

Project description:Many inorganic pigments contain heavy metals hazardous to health and environment. Much attention has been devoted to the quest for nontoxic alternatives based on rare-earth elements. However, the computation of colors from first principles is a challenge to electronic structure methods, especially for materials with localized f-orbitals. Here, starting from atomic positions only, we compute the colors of the red pigment cerium fluorosulfide as well as mercury sulfide (classic vermilion). Our methodology uses many-body theories to compute the optical absorption combined with an intermediate length-scale modelization to assess how coloration depends on film thickness, pigment concentration, and granularity. We introduce a quantitative criterion for the performance of a pigment. While for mercury sulfide, this criterion is satisfied because of large transition matrix elements between wide bands, cerium fluorosulfide presents an alternative paradigm: the bright red color is shown to stem from the combined effect of the quasi-2D and the localized nature of states. Our work shows the power of modern computational methods, with implications for the theoretical design of materials with specific optical properties.

A Hexanuclear Niobium Cluster Compound Crystallizing as Macroscopic Tubes.

Project description:Compounds with ordered structures in one or two dimensions are exciting materials and investigated intensively in many different areas of science. Many activities have been put into the preparation of low-dimensional nano-scaled structures and many compounds in this size regime are known. Contrary, the number of known compounds that have low-dimensional macroscopic sized structures that form directly in a chemical reaction is very limited. Here, we present the synthesis of the niobium cluster compound [(Et2 O)2 H]2 [Nb6 Cl18 ], crystals of which grow in form of large hexagonal empty tubes of several centimeter length and diameters in the range of 2?mm. The single-crystal X-ray structure of this compound has been refined. Under warming, the compound readily eliminates diethyl ether molecules and decomposes. From a closer look at the crystallization process a step-by-step scheme of the procedure of the tube growth is proposed. The overall conclusion from this proposal is that a crucial balance between the cluster solution concentration, the crystal growth speed and the ether diffusion speed results in the formation of macroscopic crystal tubes.

Recovery of niobium and tantalum by solvent extraction from Sn-Ta-Nb mining tailings.

Project description:The slag from the extraction processes of metals from their ores may contain valuable components that, if adequately recovered, can be reintroduced in the technological life cycle. This is the case for the material obtained in Penouta mines in the North of Spain. These mineral sites are a main source of tin obtained from cassiterite. The mineral is submitted to a pyrometallurgical process to separate tin, however cassiterite is not the only mineral present in the veins, and large amounts of other minerals are normally discarded, constituting the slag. In the present case, besides cassiterite, one of the most abundant minerals in the ore is columbo tantalite, the source of the strategic coltan. In this work the raw material (slag) has been treated by acid leaching, using HF/H2SO4 as the leaching agent. Then liquid-liquid extraction of Nb and Ta was performed, with Cyanex®923 extractant, so that both metals were obtained separately. Then they were precipitated from the corresponding aqeuous solution, and calcined in order to yield Nb2O5 of 98.5% purity and tantalum salt, after calcination and purification, of 97.3% purity. The process described in this work opens a possibility to produce high quality materials that are considered critical by the EU from alternative sources exempt of criticality factors.

Mechanism of Rare Earth Incorporation and Crystal Growth of Rare Earth Containing Type-I Clathrates.

Project description:Type-I clathrates possess extremely low thermal conductivities, a property that makes them promising materials for thermoelectric applications. The incorporation of cerium into one such clathrate has recently been shown to lead to a drastic enhancement of the thermopower, another property determining the thermoelectric efficiency. Here we explore the mechanism of the incorporation of rare earth elements into type-I clathrates. Our investigation of the crystal growth and the composition of the phase Ba8-x RE x TM y Si46-y (RE = rare earth element; TM = Au, Pd, Pt) reveals that the RE content x is mainly governed by two factors, the free cage space and the electron balance.

Intrinsic Formamidinium Tin Iodide Nanocrystals by Suppressing the Sn(IV) Impurities.

Project description:The long search for nontoxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites (LHPs) has shown that some compelling properties of LHPs, such as low effective masses of carriers, can only be attained in their closest Sn(II) and Ge(II) analogues, despite their tendency toward oxidation. Judicious choice of chemistry allowed formamidinium tin iodide (FASnI3) to reach a power conversion efficiency of 14.81% in photovoltaic devices. This progress motivated us to develop a synthesis of colloidal FASnI3 NCs with a concentration of Sn(IV) reduced to an insignificant level and to probe their intrinsic structural and optical properties. Intrinsic FASnI3 NCs exhibit unusually low absorption coefficients of 4 × 103 cm-1 at the first excitonic transition, a 190 meV increase of the band gap as compared to the bulk material, and a lack of excitonic resonances. These features are attributed to a highly disordered lattice, distinct from the bulk FASnI3 as supported by structural characterizations and first-principles calculations.

Coevaporation Stabilizes Tin-Based Perovskites in a Single Sn-Oxidation State.

Project description:Chemically processed methylammonium tin-triiodide (CH3NH3SnI3) films include Sn in different oxidation states, leading to poor stability and low power conversion efficiency of the resulting solar cells (PSCs). The development of absorbers with Sn [2+] only has been identified as one of the critical steps to develop all Sn-based devices. Here, we report on coevaporation of CH3NH3I and SnI2 to obtain absorbers with Sn being only in the preferred oxidation state [+2] as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Sn [4+]-free absorbers exhibit smooth highly crystalline surfaces and photoluminescence measurements corroborating their excellent optoelectronic properties. The films show very good stability under heat and light. Photoluminescence quantum yields up to 4 × 10-3 translate in a quasi Fermi-level splittings exceeding 850 meV under one sun equivalent conditions showing high promise in developing lead-free, high efficiency, and stable PSCs.

Rare earth elements from waste.

Project description:Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical materials in electronics and clean technologies. With the diminishing of easily accessible minerals for mining, the REE recovery from waste is an alternative toward a circular economy. Present methods for REE recovery suffer from lengthy purifications, low extractability, and high wastewater streams. Here, we report an ultrafast electrothermal process (~3000°C, ~1 s) based on flash Joule heating (FJH) for activating wastes to improve REE extractability. FJH thermally degrades or reduces the hard-to-dissolve REE species to components with high thermodynamic solubility, leading to ~2× increase in leachability and high recovery yields using diluted acid (e.g., 0.1 M HCl). The activation strategy is feasible for various wastes including coal fly ash, bauxite residue, and electronic waste. The rapid FJH process is energy-efficient with a low electrical energy consumption of 600 kWh ton-1. The potential for this route to be rapidly scaled is outlined.

Sn(IV)-free tin perovskite films realized by in situ Sn(0) nanoparticle treatment of the precursor solution.

Project description:The toxicity of lead perovskite hampers the commercialization of perovskite-based photovoltaics. While tin perovskite is a promising alternative, the facile oxidation of tin(II) to tin(IV) causes a high density of defects, resulting in lower solar cell efficiencies. Here, we show that tin(0) nanoparticles in the precursor solution can scavenge tin(IV) impurities, and demonstrate that this treatment leads to effectively tin(IV)-free perovskite films with strong photoluminescence and prolonged decay lifetimes. These nanoparticles are generated by the selective reaction of a dihydropyrazine derivative with the tin(II) fluoride additive already present in the precursor solution. Using this nanoparticle treatment, the power conversion efficiency of tin-based solar cells reaches 11.5%, with an open-circuit voltage of 0.76 V. Our nanoparticle treatment is a simple and broadly effective method that improves the purity and electrical performance of tin perovskite films.
