Synthesis of Ru alkylidene complexes.

ABSTRACT: The present work describes the robust synthesis of Ru alkylidene complexes (PCy(3))(2)Cl(2)Ru=CHR - precursors for metathesis catalysts. Moreover, the dynamic behavior of complexes where R = 2-naphthyl and 2-thienyl was studied. (1)H NMR techniques were employed to establish the preferred conformations in solution for both complexes and the energy barrier for rotation around single (Ru=)CH-C(thienyl) bond was estimated (?G(?) (303K) = 12.6 kcal/mol).

Project description:The catalytic performance of NHC-ligated Ru-indenylidene or benzylidene complexes bearing a tricyclohexylphosphine or a pyridine ligand in ring closing metathesis (RCM), cross metathesis, and ring closing enyne metathesis (RCEYM) reactions is compared. While the PCy₃ complexes perform significantly better in RCM and RCEYM reactions than the pyridine complex, all catalysts show similar activity in cross metathesis reactions.

Synthesis of High Oxidation State Molybdenum Imido Heteroatom-Substituted Alkylidene Complexes.

Project description:Reactions between Mo(NAr)(CHR)(Me2Pyr)-(OTPP) (Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3, R = H or CHCMe2Ph, Me2Pyr = 2,5-dimethylpyrrolide, OTPP = O-2,3,5,6-Ph4C6H) and CH2=CHX where X = B(pin), SiMe3, N-carbazolyl, N-pyrrolidinonyl, PPh2, OPr, or SPh lead to Mo(NAr)(CHX)-(Me2Pyr)(OTPP) complexes in good yield. All have been characterized through X-ray studies (as an acetonitrile adduct in the case of X = PPh2). The efficiencies of metathesis reactions initiated by Mo(NAr)(CHX)(Me2Pyr)(OTPP) complexes can be rationalized on the basis of steric factors; electronic differences imposed as a consequence of X being bound to the alkylidene carbon do not seem to play a major role. Side reactions that promote catalyst decomposition do not appear to be a serious limitation for Mo=CHX species.

Synthesis of Tungsten Imido Alkylidene Complexes that Contain an Electron-Withdrawing Imido Ligand.

Project description:Tungsten NArR alkylidene complexes have been prepared that contain the electron-withdrawing ArR groups 2,4,6-X3C6H2 (ArX3, X = Cl, Br), 2,6-Cl2-4-CF3C6H2 (ArCl2CF3), and 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3 (Ar(CF3)2). Reported complexes include W(NArR)2Cl2(dme) (dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), W(NArR)2(CH2CMe3)2, W(NArR)(CHCMe3)(OTf)2(dme), and W(NArR)(CHCMe3)(ODBMP)2 (DBMP = 4-Me-2,6-(CHPh2)C6H2). The W(NArR)(CHCMe3)(ODBMP)2 complexes were explored as initiators for the polymerization of 2,3-dicarbomethoxynorbornadiene (DCMNBD).

Synthesis of Molybdenum and Tungsten Alkylidene Complexes That Contain Sterically Demanding Arenethiolate Ligands.

Project description:Imido alkylidene complexes of Mo and W and oxo alkylidene complexes of W that contain thiophenoxide ligands of the type S-2,3,5,6-Ph4C6H (STPP) and S-2,6-(mesityl)2C6H3 (SHMT = S-hexamethylterphenyl) have been prepared in order to compare their metathesis activity with that of the analogous phenoxide complexes. All thiolate complexes were significantly slower (up to ?10× slower) for the metathesis homocoupling of 1-octene or polymerization of 2,3-dicarbomethoxynorbornene, and none of them was Z-selective. The slower rates could be attributed to the greater ?-donating ability of a thiophenoxide versus the analogous phenoxide and consequently a higher electron density at the metal in the thiophenoxide complexes.

Structure and reactivity of alkyne-chelated ruthenium alkylidene complexes.

Project description:The isolation and structural characterization of alkyne-bound Ru alkylidene complexes has been elusive. However, a sequential enyne ring-closing metathesis of a diyne moiety and metallotropic [1,3]-shift followed by a second enyne ring-closing metathesis allowed the formation of a highly stable alkyne-chelated ruthenium complex. The full characterization of this complex was realized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.

Synthesis and Biological Studies of Novel Aminophosphonates and Their Metal Carbonyl Complexes (Fe, Ru).

Project description:The quest to find new inhibitors of biologically relevant targets is considered an important strategy to introduce new drug candidates for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. A series of (aminomethyl)benzylphosphonates 8a-c and their metallocarbonyl iron 9a-c and ruthenium 10a-c complexes were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their inhibitory potentials against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) by determination of IC50. Metallocarbonyl derivatives, in general, did not show significant inhibition activity against these enzymes, the most potent inhibitor was the (aminomethyl)benzylphosphonate 8a (IC50 = 1.215 µM against AChE). Molecular docking analysis of AChE and (aminomethyl)benzylphosphonates 8a-c showed the strongest interactions of 8a and AChE compared to isomers 8b and 8c. Cytotoxicity studies of synthesized compounds towards the V79 cell line were also performed and discussed.

Salicylaldimine Ruthenium Alkylidene Complexes: Metathesis Catalysts Tuned for Protic Solvents.

Project description:Tuning the electronic and steric environment of olefin metathesis catalysts with specialized ligands can adapt them to broader applications, including metathesis in aqueous solvents. Bidentate salicylaldimine ligands are known to stabilize ruthenium alkylidene complexes, as well as allow ring-closing metathesis in protic media. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of exceptionally robust olefin metathesis catalysts bearing both bidentate salicylaldimine and N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, including a trimethylammonium-functionalized complex adapted for polar solvents. NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallographic analysis confirm the structures of the complexes. Although the N-heterocyclic carbene-salicylaldimine ligand combination limits the activity of these catalysts in nonpolar solvents, this pairing enables efficient ring-closing metathesis of both dienes and enynes in methanol and methanol-water mixtures under air.

Bipyridine Adducts of Molybdenum Imido Alkylidene and Imido Alkylidyne Complexes.

Project description:Seven bipyridine adducts of molybdenum imido alkylidene bispyrrolide complexes of the type Mo(NR)(CHCMe(2)R')(Pyr)(2)(bipy) (1a-1g; R = 2,6-i-Pr(2)C(6)H(3) (Ar), adamantyl (Ad), 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (Ar'), 2-i-PrC(6)H(4) (Ar(iPr)), 2-ClC(6)H(4) (Ar(Cl)), 2-t-BuC(6)H(4) (Ar(t) (Bu)), and 2-MesitylC(6)H(4) (Ar(M)), respectively; R' = Me, Ph) have been prepared using three different methods. Up to three isomers of the adducts are observed that are proposed to be the trans and two possible cis pyrrolide isomers of syn alkylidenes. Sonication of a mixture containing 1a-1g, HMTOH (2,6-dimesitylphenol), and ZnCl(2)(dioxane) led to the formation of MAP species of the type Mo(NR)(CHCMe(2)R')(Pyr)(OHMT) (3a-3g). DCMNBD (2,3-dicarbomethoxynorbornadiene) is polymerized employing 3a-3g as initiators to yield >98% cis,syndiotactic poly(DCMNBD). Attempts to prepare bipy adducts of bisdimethylpyrrolide complexes led to formation of imido alkylidyne complexes of the type Mo(NR)(CCMe(2)R')(Me(2)Pyr)(bipy) (Me(2)Pyr = 2,5-dimethylpyrrolide; 4a - 4g) through a ligand-induced migration of an alkylidene ? proton to a dimethylpyrrolide ligand. X-ray structures of Mo(NAr)(CHCMe(2)Ph)(Pyr)(2)(bipy) (1a), Mo(NAr(iPr))(CHCMe(2)Ph)(Pyr)(OHMT) (3d), Mo(NAr)(CCMe(2)Ph)(Me(2)Pyr)(bipy) (4a), and Mo(NAr(T))(CCMe(3))(Me(2)Pyr)(bipy) (Ar(T) = 2-(2,4,6-i-Pr(3)C(6)H(2))C(6)H(4); 4g) showed structures with the normal bond lengths and angles.

Comparison Between Binuclear and Mononuclear Ru(II) Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, Photophysics, and Oxygen Sensing Performance.

Project description:Owing to their attractive potential in optoelectronic application, luminescent Ru(II) complexes with diamine ligands are harvesting more and more research efforts. These literature efforts, however, are mostly mononuclear ones, with no detailed discussion on the performance comparison between mononuclear and multinuclear Ru(II) complexes. This work synthesized three diamine ligands having two or multiple chelating sites in each ligand, as well as their Ru(II) complexes. The single-crystal structure, electronic structure, and photophysical parameters of these Ru(II) complexes were analyzed and compared. It was found that multinuclear Ru(II) complexes had a pure MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer)-based emissive center, showing longer emission lifetime and higher emission quantum yield, which were desired for oxygen sensing. Then, the oxygen sensing performance of these mononuclear and multinuclear Ru(II) complexes was systematically compared by doping them into polymer fibers via electrospinning method. Improved oxygen sensing performance was observed from binuclear Ru(II)-doped nanofibrous samples, compared with the sensing performance of mononuclear ones, including higher sensitivity, shorter response/recovery time, and better photostability. The causation was attributed to the fact that the emissive state of multinuclear Ru(II) complexes was MLCT-based ones and thus more sensitive to O2 quenching than monocular Ru(II) complexes whose emissive state was a mixture of MLCT and LLCT (ligand-to-ligand charge transfer). In addition, a multinuclear Ru(II) complex had multiple emissive/sensing components, so that its sensing collision probability with O2 was increased, showing better photostability and shorter response/recovery time. The novelty of this work was the linear oxygen sensing curve, which was rarely reported in the previous work.

Z-Selective olefin metathesis reactions promoted by tungsten oxo alkylidene complexes.

Project description:Addition of LiOHMT (OHMT = O-2,6-dimesitylphenoxide) to W(O)(CH-t-Bu)(PMe(2)Ph)(2)Cl(2) led to WO(CH-t-Bu)Cl(OHMT)(PMe(2)Ph) (4). Subsequent addition of Li(2,5-Me(2)C(4)H(2)N) to 4 yielded yellow W(O)(CH-t-Bu)(OHMT)(Me(2)Pyr)(PMe(2)Ph) (5). Compound 5 is a highly effective catalyst for the Z-selective coupling of selected terminal olefins (at 0.2% loading) to give product in >75% yield with >99% Z configuration. Addition of 2 equiv of B(C(6)F(5))(3) to 5 afforded a catalyst activated at the oxo ligand by B(C(6)F(5))(3). 5·B(C(6)F(5))(3) is a highly active catalyst that produces thermodynamic products (~20% Z).
