ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(23)H(38)O(2), a tetra-cyclo-[10.2.2.0(1,10).0(4,9)] hexa-decane structure, crystallized with four independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. In the crystal, these independent mol-ecules are linked by O-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming a polymeric chain propagating in [100].

It contains two fused and unbridged cyclo-hexane rings, which form a trans ring junction with a chair conformation. The asymmetric unit includes one fumaropimaric acid and two dimethyl-formamide mol-ecules. The crystal structure is stabilized through inter-molecular O-H?O hydrogen bonds between dimethyl-formamide and fumaropimaric acid.

In the crystal, the triol mol-ecule and the ethanol solvent mol-ecule are linked by hydroxyl O-H?O hydrogen bonds, giving a two-dimensional network structure.

Intra-molecular C-H⋯O inter-actions generate S(5) ring motifs and an O-H⋯O inter-action generates an S(7) ring motif. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked via inter-molecular O-H⋯O inter-actions along the b axis and further stacked along a axis. The absolute configuration of the title compound was inferred from previously solved structures of its analogues.

Project description:The title compound, C16H20N2 2+·2Br-·H2O (1) is a member of the class of compounds called viologens. Viologens are quaternary salts of di-pyridyls and are especially useful as redox indicators as a result of their large negative one-electron reduction potentials. Compound 1 consists of a dication composed of a pair of 4-methyl-pyridine rings mutually joined at the 2-position, with a dihedral angle between the pyridine rings of 62.35 (4)°. In addition, the rings are tethered via the pyridine nitro-gen atoms by a tetra-methyl-ene bridge. Charge balance is provided by a pair of bromide anions, which are hydrogen bonded to a single water mol-ecule [D O⋯Br = 3.3670 (15) and 3.3856 (15) Å]. The crystal structure of 1, details of an improved synthesis, and a full analysis of its NMR spectra are presented.

The dication lies across a crystallographic inversion center. The imidazole ring is twisted away from the central benzene ring, making a dihedral angle of 76.23 (6)°. The hexa-fluoro-phosphate anions link the cations into a three-dimensional network via inter-molecular C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds. A weak C-H⋯π inter-action further stabilizes the crystal structure.
