Dichlorido{2-(morpholin-4-yl)-N-[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl-idene]ethanamine-?N,N',N''}copper(II) monohydrate.

ABSTRACT: In the title compound, [CuCl(2)(C(13)H(19)N(3)O)]·H(2)O, the tridentate Schiff base ligand and the two Cl atoms complete a distorted square-pyramidal coordination geometry around the Cu(II) ion in which the three N atoms and one Cl atom are located in the basal plane and the other Cl atom is at the apical position. In the crystal, O-H?Cl hydrogen bonds link the complex mol-ecules and the uncoordinated water mol-ecules into infinite chains along the a axis. The chains are further connected into a three-dimensional network via C-H?O and C-H?Cl inter-actions.

The tridentate acetohydrazide ligand chelates in a meridional fashion. The chloride ligand in the axial position forms a long Cu-Cl distance of 2.4892?(9)?Å. In contrast, the Cu-Cl distance from the equatorial chloride ligand is much shorter [2.2110?(7)?Å]. Inter-molecular N-H?Cl and C-H?Cl hydrogen bonds link the complexes into a three-dimensional network.

The coordination geometry is defined by three N-atom donors from the tridentate 2-(pyridin-2-yl)-N-(pyridin-2-yl-methyl-idene)ethanamine ligand and two terminal Cl atoms. Although the H atoms of the lattice water molecule were not located, O?O distances of 3.103?(7)?Å and O?Cl distances of 3.240?(3) and 3.482?(4)?Å suggest that hydrogen bonding is responsible for the stabilization of the crystal packing.

The apical Cl atoms of adjacent complex units are hydrogen-bond acceptors to two water mol-ecules, the inter-action generating a centrosymmetric dimer through a cyclic R(4) (2)(8) association.

Project description:The reaction of N-phenyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine with copper chloride dihydrate produced the title neutral complex, [CuCl2(C12H10N2)(H2O)]·H2O. The CuII ion is five-coordinated in a distorted square-pyramidal geometry, in which the two N atoms of the bidentate Schiff base, as well as one chloro and a water mol-ecule, form the irregular base of the pyramidal structure. Meanwhile, the apical chloride ligand inter-acts through a strong hydrogen bond with a water mol-ecule of crystallization. In the crystal, mol-ecules are arranged in pairs, forming a stacking of symmetrical cyclic dimers that inter-act in turn through strong hydrogen bonds between the chloride ligands and both the coordinated and the crystallization water mol-ecules. The mol-ecular and electronic structures of the complex were also studied in detail using EPR (continuous and pulsed), FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, as well as magnetization measurements. Likewise, Hirshfeld surface analysis was used to investigate the inter-molecular inter-actions in the crystal packing.
