Microwave-assisted cyanation of an aryl bromide directly on a metal-organic framework.

ABSTRACT: A microwave-assisted postsynthetic modification (PSM) reaction on a metal-organic framework (MOF) has been realized. Cyanation of the Zr(4+)-based UiO-66-Br was achieved with CuCN and microwave irradiation to produce UiO-66-CN. This protocol represents a notable example of PSM on an aryl halide MOF producing a cyano-functionalized MOF.

The Preparation of Porous Sol-Gel Silica with Metal Organic Framework MIL-101(Cr) by Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Method for Adsorption Chillers.

Project description:Abstract: Metal organic framework (MOF) of MIL-101(Cr)-Silica (SiO₂) composites with highly mesoporous and uniform dispersions were synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method followed by the sol-gel technique. Water vapor adsorption experiments were conducted on the MIL-101(Cr)-SiO₂ composites for industrial adsorption chiller applications. The effects of MIL-101(Cr)-SiO₂ mixing ratios (ranging from 0% to 52%), the surface area and amount of Lewis and Brønsted sites were comprehensively determined through water vapor adsorption experiments and the adsorption mechanism is also explained. The BET and Langmuir results indicate that the adsorption isotherms associated with the various MIL-101(Cr)-SiO₂ ratios demonstrated Type I and IV adsorption behavior, due to the mesoporous structure of the MIL-101(Cr)-SiO₂. It was observed that the increase in the amount of Lewis and Brønsted sites on the MIL-101(Cr)-SiO₂ composites significantly improves the water vapor adsorption efficiency, for greater stability during the water vapor adsorption experiments.

Metal-Assisted and Microwave-Accelerated Evaporative Crystallization.

Project description:We describe a platform technology, called metal-assisted and microwave-assisted evaporative crystallization (MA-MAEC), based on the combined use of silver nanoparticles and microwave heating for selective and rapid crystallization of small molecules. In this regard, the crystallization of a model small molecule (glycine) was achieved in several seconds. Glycine crystals grown on silver nanostructures with and without microwave heating were found to be larger than those grown on blank glass slides. The MA-MAEC technique has the potential to selectively grow the desired polymorphs of small molecules "on-demand" in a fraction of the time as compared to the conventional evaporative crystallization.

Metal-organic framework patterns and membranes with heterogeneous pores for flow-assisted switchable separations.

Project description:Porous metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) are attractive materials for gas storage, separations, and catalytic reactions. A challenge exists, however, on how to introduce larger pores juxtaposed with the inherent micropores in different forms of MOFs, which would enable new functions and applications. Here we report the formation of heterogeneous pores within MOF particles, patterns, and membranes, using a discriminate etching chemistry, called silver-catalyzed decarboxylation. The heterogeneous pores are formed, even in highly stable MOFs, without altering the original structure. A decarboxylated MOF membrane is shown to have pH-responsive switchable selectivity for the flow-assisted separation of similarly sized proteins. We envision that our method will allow the use of heterogeneous pores for massive transfer and separation of complex and large molecules, and that the capability for patterning and positioning heterogeneous MOF films on diverse substrates bodes well for various energy and electronic device applications.

Assessing Crystallisation Kinetics of Zr Metal-Organic Frameworks through Turbidity Measurements to Inform Rapid Microwave-Assisted Synthesis.

Project description:Controlling the crystallisation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), network solids of metal ions or clusters connected by organic ligands, is often hindered by the significant number of synthetic variables inherent to their synthesis. Coordination modulation, the addition of monotopic competing ligands to solvothermal syntheses, can allow tuning of physical properties (particle size, porosity, surface chemistry), enhance crystallinity, and select desired phases, by modifying the kinetics of self-assembly, but its mechanism(s) are poorly understood. Herein, turbidity measurements were used to assess the effects of modulation on the solvothermal synthesis of the prototypical Zr terephthalate MOF UiO-66 and the knowledge gained was applied to its rapid microwave synthesis. The studied experimental parameters-temperature, reagent concentration, reagent aging, metal precursor, water content, and modulator addition-all influence the time taken for onset of nucleation, and subsequently allow microwave synthesis of UiO-66 in as little as one minute. The simple, low cost turbidity measurements align closely with previously reported in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies, proving their simplicity and utility for probing the nucleation of complex materials while offering significant insights to the synthetic chemist.

Dual Metal-Organic Framework Heterointerface.

Project description:Herein, a core-shell dual metal-organic framework (MOF) heterointerface is synthesized. The Prussian blue (PB) MOF acts as a core for the growth of a porphyrin-doped MOF which is named PB@MOF. Porphyrins can significantly enhance the transfer of photoinspired electrons from PB and suppress the recombination of electrons and holes, thus enhancing the photocatalytic properties and consequently promoting the yields of singlet oxygen rapidly under 660 nm illumination. PB@MOF can exhibit a better photothermal conversion efficiency up to 29.9% under 808 nm near-infrared irradiation (NIR). The PB@MOF heterointerface can possess excellent antibacterial efficacies of 99.31% and 98.68% opposed to Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, separately, under the dual light illumination of 808 nm NIR and 660 nm red light for 10 min. Furthermore, the trace amount of Fe and Zr ions can trigger the immune system to favor wound healing, promising that PB@MOF achieves the rapid therapy of bacterial infected wounds and environmental disinfection.

Project description:A family of ?-aryl-?-aminophosphonates and ?-aryl-?-aminophosphine oxides was synthesized by the microwave-assisted solvent-free addition of dialkyl phosphites and diphenylphosphine oxide, respectively, to imines formed from benzaldehyde derivatives and primary amines. After optimization, the reactivity was mapped, and the fine mechanism was evaluated by DFT calculations. Two ?-aminophosphonates were subjected to an X-ray study revealing a racemic dimer formation made through a N-H···O=P intermolecular hydrogen bridges pair.

Ultrathin two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic framework single-crystalline nanosheets enabled by surfactant-assisted synthesis.

Project description:Two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) have recently emerged for potential applications in (opto-)electronics, chemiresistive sensing, and energy storage and conversion, due to their excellent electrical conductivity, abundant active sites, and intrinsic porous structures. However, developing ultrathin 2D c-MOF nanosheets (NSs) for facile solution processing and integration into devices remains a great challenge, mostly due to unscalable synthesis, low yield, limited lateral size and low crystallinity. Here, we report a surfactant-assisted solution synthesis toward ultrathin 2D c-MOF NSs, including HHB-Cu (HHB = hexahydroxybenzene), HHB-Ni and HHTP-Cu (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene). For the first time, we achieve single-crystalline HHB-Cu(Ni) NSs featured with a thickness of 4-5 nm (∼8-10 layers) and a lateral size of 0.25-0.65 μm2, as well as single-crystalline HHTP-Cu NSs with a thickness of ∼5.1 ± 2.6 nm (∼10 layers) and a lateral size of 0.002-0.02 μm2. Benefiting from the ultrathin feature, the synthetic NSs allow fast ion diffusion and high utilization of active sites. As a proof of concept, when serving as a cathode material for Li-ion storage, HHB-Cu NSs deliver a remarkable rate capability (charge within 3 min) and long-term cycling stability (90% capacity retention after 1000 cycles), superior to the corresponding bulk materials and other reported MOF cathodes.

Metal-Organic Framework for Transparent Electronics.

Project description:Electronics allowing for visible light to pass through are attractive, where a key challenge is to make the core functional units transparent. Here, it is shown that transparent electronics can be constructed by epitaxial growth of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on single-layer graphene (SLG) to give a desirable transparency of 95.7% to 550 nm visible light and an electrical conductivity of 4.0 × 104 S m-1. Through lattice and symmetry match, collective alignment of MOF pores and dense packing of MOFs vertically on SLG are achieved, as directly visualized by electron microscopy. These MOF-on-SLG constructs are capable of room-temperature recognition of gas molecules at the ppb level with a linear range from 10 to 108 ppb, providing real-time gas monitoring function in transparent electronics. The corresponding devices can be fabricated on flexible substrates with large size, 3 × 5 cm, and afford continuous folding for more than 200 times without losing conductivity or transparency.

Minerals with metal-organic framework structures.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an increasingly important family of advanced materials based on open, nanometer-scale metal-organic architectures, whose design and synthesis are based on the directed assembly of carefully designed subunits. We now demonstrate an unexpected link between mineralogy and MOF chemistry by discovering that the rare organic minerals stepanovite and zhemchuzhnikovite exhibit structures found in well-established magnetic and proton-conducting metal oxalate MOFs. Structures of stepanovite and zhemchuzhnikovite, exhibiting almost nanometer-wide and guest-filled apertures and channels, respectively, change the perspective of MOFs as exclusively artificial materials and represent, so far, unique examples of open framework architectures in organic minerals.

Metal-organic framework crystal-glass composites.

Project description:The majority of research into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) focuses on their crystalline nature. Recent research has revealed solid-liquid transitions within the family, which we use here to create a class of functional, stable and porous composite materials. Described herein is the design, synthesis, and characterisation of MOF crystal-glass composites, formed by dispersing crystalline MOFs within a MOF-glass matrix. The coordinative bonding and chemical structure of a MIL-53 crystalline phase are preserved within the ZIF-62 glass matrix. Whilst separated phases, the interfacial interactions between the closely contacted microdomains improve the mechanical properties of the composite glass. More significantly, the high temperature open pore phase of MIL-53, which spontaneously transforms to a narrow pore upon cooling in the presence of water, is stabilised at room temperature in the crystal-glass composite. This leads to a significant improvement of CO2 adsorption capacity.
