ABSTRACT: A microwave-assisted postsynthetic modification (PSM) reaction on a metal-organic framework (MOF) has been realized. Cyanation of the Zr(4+)-based UiO-66-Br was achieved with CuCN and microwave irradiation to produce UiO-66-CN. This protocol represents a notable example of PSM on an aryl halide MOF producing a cyano-functionalized MOF.

The Preparation of Porous Sol-Gel Silica with Metal Organic Framework MIL-101(Cr) by Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Method for Adsorption Chillers.

Project description:Abstract: Metal organic framework (MOF) of MIL-101(Cr)-Silica (SiO₂) composites with highly mesoporous and uniform dispersions were synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method followed by the sol-gel technique. Water vapor adsorption experiments were conducted on the MIL-101(Cr)-SiO₂ composites for industrial adsorption chiller applications. The effects of MIL-101(Cr)-SiO₂ mixing ratios (ranging from 0% to 52%), the surface area and amount of Lewis and Brønsted sites were comprehensively determined through water vapor adsorption experiments and the adsorption mechanism is also explained. The BET and Langmuir results indicate that the adsorption isotherms associated with the various MIL-101(Cr)-SiO₂ ratios demonstrated Type I and IV adsorption behavior, due to the mesoporous structure of the MIL-101(Cr)-SiO₂. It was observed that the increase in the amount of Lewis and Brønsted sites on the MIL-101(Cr)-SiO₂ composites significantly improves the water vapor adsorption efficiency, for greater stability during the water vapor adsorption experiments.

Perfluoropentane/apatinib-encapsulated metal-organic framework nanoparticles enhanced the microwave ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Project description:Microwave ablation (MWA) is a promising minimally invasive therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the efficiency of MWA in treating HCC is evidently limited by the incomplete ablation of large tumors and tumors in high-risk locations. Here we designed an iron-based metal-organic framework nanomedicine (PFP-Apa-MOF) by loading perfluoropentane (PFP) and apatinib (Apa). After being absorbed by HCC, iron could induce ferroptosis. PFP could be activated into bubbles and act as an ultrasound agent for detecting the ablation margin. As an effective antiangiogenic drug, Apa could inhibit tumor residual growth after MWA. The high efficiency of PFP-Apa-MOF was fully demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that MWA combined with PFP-Apa-MOF clearly enhanced the ablation efficiency, leading to apparent tumor inhibition, and increased tumor apoptosis and lipid peroxide. PFP-Apa-MOF could play a valuable role in enhancing MWA to achieve better therapeutic efficacy in HCC.

Plasmonic-Assisted Thermocyclizations in Living Cells Using Metal-Organic Framework Based Nanoreactors.

Project description:We describe a microporous plasmonic nanoreactor to carry out designed near-infrared (NIR)-driven photothermal cyclizations inside living cells. As a proof of concept, we chose an intramolecular cyclization that is based on the nucleophilic attack of a pyridine onto an electrophilic carbon, a process that requires high activation energies and is typically achieved in bulk solution by heating at ∼90 °C. The core-shell nanoreactor (NR) has been designed to include a gold nanostar core, which is embedded within a metal-organic framework (MOF) based on a polymer-stabilized zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8). Once accumulated inside living cells, the MOF-based cloak of NRs allows an efficient diffusion of reactants into the plasmonic chamber, where they undergo the transformation upon near-IR illumination. The photothermal-driven reaction enables the intracellular generation of cyclic fluorescent products that can be tracked using fluorescence microscopy. The strategy may find different type of applications, such as for the spatio-temporal activation of prodrugs.

Water-assisted hydrogen spillover in Pt nanoparticle-based metal-organic framework composites.

Project description:Hydrogen spillover is the migration of activated hydrogen atoms from a metal particle onto the surface of catalyst support, which has made significant progress in heterogeneous catalysis. The phenomenon has been well researched on oxide supports, yet its occurrence, detection method and mechanism on non-oxide supports such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) remain controversial. Herein, we develop a facile strategy for efficiency enhancement of hydrogen spillover on various MOFs with the aid of water molecules. By encapsulating platinum (Pt) nanoparticles in MOF-801 for activating hydrogen and hydrogenation of C=C in the MOF ligand as activated hydrogen detector, a research platform is built with Pt@MOF-801 to measure the hydrogenation region for quantifying the efficiency and spatial extent of hydrogen spillover. A water-assisted hydrogen spillover path is found with lower migration energy barrier than the traditional spillover path via ligand. The synergy of the two paths explains a significant boost of hydrogen spillover in MOF-801 from imperceptible existence to spanning at least 100-nm-diameter region. Moreover, such strategy shows universality in different MOF and covalent organic framework materials for efficiency promotion of hydrogen spillover and improvement of catalytic activity and antitoxicity, opening up new horizons for catalyst design in porous crystalline materials.

High-yield halide-assisted synthesis of metal-organic framework UiO-based nanocarriers.

Project description:The synthesis of nanosized metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) is requisite for their application as injectable drug delivery systems (DDSs) and other biorelevant purposes. Herein, we have critically examined the role of different synthetic parameters leading to the production of UiO-66 crystals smaller than 100 nm. Of note, we demonstrate the co-modulator role conferred by halide ions, not only to produce NMOFs with precise morphology and size, but also to significantly improve the reaction yield. The resulting NMOFs are highly crystalline and exhibit sustained colloidal stability in different biologically relevant media. As a proof of concept, these NMOFs were loaded with Rhodamine 6G (R6G), which remained trapped in most common biologically relevant media. When incubated with living mammalian cells, the R6G-loaded NMOFs were efficiently internalized and did not impair cell viability even at relatively high doses.

Graphene-containing metal-organic framework nanocomposites for enhanced microwave ablation of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Project description:Salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC), one of the most common malignant tumors in the head and neck region, is characterized by high postoperative recurrence rate and poor prognosis. Microwave (MW) ablation possesses advantages in preserving SACC patients' facial aesthetics and oral function, but unfortunately, it suffers from low therapeutic efficacy due to the limited MW-thermal efficiency. Moreover, the insufficient thermal ablation may aggravate hypoxic state in tumors, which is deleterious to the treatment of residual tumors and aggressive tumors. Hence, MW ablation has been rarely applied in treating head and neck tumors in recent years. To minimize the unfavorable outcomes and maximize the therapeutic effects of MW ablation, a MW sensitizer coupled with a self-sufficient oxygen nanoagent was employed for the first time in MW ablation to treat head and neck tumors. We prepared a graphene-containing metal-organic framework (ZIF67@Gr-PEG), which exhibited excellent MW thermal conversion ability endowed by the incorporated Gr and showed in situ oxygen generation capacity derived from the ZIF67 matrix. In an animal experiment, ZIF67@Gr-PEG-based MW ablation with a temperature up to 66.1 °C exhibited a high tumor ablation rate. More importantly, insufficient MW ablation-induced high expressions of HIF-1α and VEGF were observed in our experiment, whereas the levels of tumor hypoxia and angiogenesis were efficiently decreased in MW ablation with the assistance of ZIF67@Gr-PEG nanocomposites (NCs). Notably, our strategy for MW ablation not only evidences the great potential of ZIF67@Gr-PEG but also promotes the translation of thermotherapeutic graphene from basic research to clinical practice.

Effects of Acid Modulators on the Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Cr/Sn Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted remarkable attention for their distinguished structural designability. Precisely controlling the particle size and improving the structural stability of MOF nanoparticles influence their catalytic activity significantly. In this study, six acids (nitric, hydrochloric, formic, acetic, succinic, and citric acids) were used as modulators to prepare bimetallic MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) (MIL stands for Materials of Institut Lavoisier) via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Changes in volumetric, structural, stability, and catalytic properties, size, and shape of MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) were examined using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and N2 adsorption-desorption measurements. All modulators altered the MOF properties. Compared with other samples, acetic acid as a modulator mildly altered the MOF morphology by narrowing their particle size distribution, enhancing the specific surface area, and significantly improving their water and thermal stabilities. The addition of acetic acid was suitable for the catalytic conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), achieving a 43.1% 5-HMF yield with 91.4% glucose conversion in a mixed solution of γ-valerolactone and saturated salt water at 150 °C after 30 min.

Metal-Assisted and Microwave-Accelerated Evaporative Crystallization.

Project description:We describe a platform technology, called metal-assisted and microwave-assisted evaporative crystallization (MA-MAEC), based on the combined use of silver nanoparticles and microwave heating for selective and rapid crystallization of small molecules. In this regard, the crystallization of a model small molecule (glycine) was achieved in several seconds. Glycine crystals grown on silver nanostructures with and without microwave heating were found to be larger than those grown on blank glass slides. The MA-MAEC technique has the potential to selectively grow the desired polymorphs of small molecules "on-demand" in a fraction of the time as compared to the conventional evaporative crystallization.

Metal-organic framework patterns and membranes with heterogeneous pores for flow-assisted switchable separations.

Project description:Porous metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) are attractive materials for gas storage, separations, and catalytic reactions. A challenge exists, however, on how to introduce larger pores juxtaposed with the inherent micropores in different forms of MOFs, which would enable new functions and applications. Here we report the formation of heterogeneous pores within MOF particles, patterns, and membranes, using a discriminate etching chemistry, called silver-catalyzed decarboxylation. The heterogeneous pores are formed, even in highly stable MOFs, without altering the original structure. A decarboxylated MOF membrane is shown to have pH-responsive switchable selectivity for the flow-assisted separation of similarly sized proteins. We envision that our method will allow the use of heterogeneous pores for massive transfer and separation of complex and large molecules, and that the capability for patterning and positioning heterogeneous MOF films on diverse substrates bodes well for various energy and electronic device applications.

Assessing Crystallisation Kinetics of Zr Metal-Organic Frameworks through Turbidity Measurements to Inform Rapid Microwave-Assisted Synthesis.

Project description:Controlling the crystallisation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), network solids of metal ions or clusters connected by organic ligands, is often hindered by the significant number of synthetic variables inherent to their synthesis. Coordination modulation, the addition of monotopic competing ligands to solvothermal syntheses, can allow tuning of physical properties (particle size, porosity, surface chemistry), enhance crystallinity, and select desired phases, by modifying the kinetics of self-assembly, but its mechanism(s) are poorly understood. Herein, turbidity measurements were used to assess the effects of modulation on the solvothermal synthesis of the prototypical Zr terephthalate MOF UiO-66 and the knowledge gained was applied to its rapid microwave synthesis. The studied experimental parameters-temperature, reagent concentration, reagent aging, metal precursor, water content, and modulator addition-all influence the time taken for onset of nucleation, and subsequently allow microwave synthesis of UiO-66 in as little as one minute. The simple, low cost turbidity measurements align closely with previously reported in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies, proving their simplicity and utility for probing the nucleation of complex materials while offering significant insights to the synthetic chemist.
