Clearance of apoptotic cells is necessary for tissue development, homeostasis and resolution of inflammation. The uptake of apoptotic cells is initiated by an 'eat-me' signal, such as phosphatidylserine, on the cell surface and phagocytes recognize the signal by using specific receptors.
