The differential diagnosis of diarrhea in immunocompromised patients encompasses many intestinal parasites including the coccidian Cystoisospora belli. Gastrointestinal infection with C. belli leads to cystoisosporiasis with diarrhea and, depending on host immune status, can cause extraintestinal disease.
