Two new species of Urothoe (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Gammaridea) from the East Johor Islands Archipelago, Malaysia.

ABSTRACT: Two new species of urothoid amphipods from Pulau Sibu and Pulau Tinggi, Johor are described and illustrated. The specimens of Urothoe sibuensis new species were collected by vertical haul plankton net and is distinctively different from other existing Urothoe species by these combination of special characters; similar gnathopods 1-2 with short and stout propodus expanded into poorly defined palms; large eyes and epimeron 3 smooth. Urothoe tinggiensis new species as collected using an airlift suction sampler at seagrass area is characterized by its different gnathopodal configuration with setose dactylus of 5th pereopod; eyes minute; carpus is wider than merus in the 5th pereopod; subquadrate coxa 4; merus and carpus of pereopods 6-7 are linear.

Project description:A new amphilochid amphipod, Apolochus cresti sp. n. is described from specimens collected in the shallow waters of Maryland coastal bays, Mid-Atlantic region, at depths from 1.7 to 2.1 m. The new species appears to be most closely related to the northeastern Atlantic species, Apolochus neapolitanus sensu Krapp-Schickel, 1982. Apolochus cresti sp. n. can be distinguished from Apolochus neapolitanus by a combination of characters, including the shape of the lateral cephalic lobe, shape of the mandible molar process, relative length of mandible palp article 3, the carpal lobe length of gnathopod 2, and the lack of sub-marginal spines on antero-lateral surface of gnathopod 2. Spearman's rank correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between the abundance of Apolochus cresti and the amount of macroalgae collected per station, bay, and month. Ovigerous females carrying eggs were present from March to May and in October, reaching their peak in May, although only ovigerous females carrying juveniles were found in May. Males were abundant in March and were collected also in May and October. A key for the separation of Apolochus species is presented.

Two new species of <i>Floresorchestia</i> (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Talitridae) in Thailand.

Project description:The beach-hopper and land-hopper genus Floresorchestia Bousfield, 1984 is most widespread in terrestrial and marine littoral habitats and has been recorded from the South African coasts through to tropical Indo-Pacific and Caribbean Sea. In Thailand, there is only Floresorchestia samroiyodensis Azman, Wongkamhaeng & Dumrongrojwattana, 2014 reported from the swamp of Prachuab Kiri Khan, southern Thailand. In this work, two new species of Floresorchestia from Phutsa Reservoir in Nakhon Ratchasima and the man-made swamp in Burapha University are described. The new species are characterised by the mandible left lacinia mobilis 4-dentate; the posterior margin of merus, carpus and propodus covered in palmate setae; the uropod 3 peduncle with two robust setae and the telson longer than broad. The characters of the specimens are described and illustrated in this paper. All specimens are deposited in the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand.

Project description:Two new species of the family Aoridae, one from the genus Aoroides Walker, 1898, and other from the genus Grandidierella Coutière, 1904, are reported from Korean waters. Aoroidesgracilicrus sp. nov. is similar to A.longimerus in having numerous plumose setae on the basis and carpus of gnathopod 1. However, the new species can be distinguished from A.longimerus by the numerous plumose setae on the bases of pereopods 3 and 4 and the slender basis of pereopod 7. Grandidierellanaroensis sp. nov. is morphologically most similar to G.pseudosakaensis. However, the new species can be distinguished by the presence of small distal and proximal processes and a large middle process on the carpus of gnathopod 1, and the subovate propodus of gnathopod 1. Both new species are illustrated and compared to related species. A key to species in the family Aoridae from Korean waters is also provided.

Two new species of the genus <i>Paradexamine</i> (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Dexaminidae) from Korean Waters.

Project description:Two dexaminid amphipod species belonging to the genus Paradexamine were collected from Korean waters. After observation and identification compared with related congeners, these two species are revealed to be new to science. In comparative identification, one of the new species, P.acuta sp. nov. is similar to P.houtete in having an acutely rounded lobe and posteroventrally pointed coxa 7. However, this new species is distinguished from P.houtete in having a larger number of medial setae on the propodus of gnathopod 1 and a rounded basis of pereopod 6. This new species is also very similar to P.marlie s.l. Hirayama from Japanese waters, and P.marlie s.l. might be re-established or synonymized with P.acuta sp. nov. in the future. The other new species, P.rotundogena sp. nov. is similar to P.tafunsaka in having a rounded eye lobe; however, it is distinguished from P.tafunsaka in having an elongate carpus on gnathopod 2 and the differently shaped basis of pereopod 7. A key to the five Korean species of Paradexamine, including the two new species, is also provided.

Project description:Two new species of maerid and melitid Amphipoda, Maeropsis paphavasitae and Rotomelita longipropoda, respectively, collected from a seagrassbed of the Lower Gulf of Thailand, are described. Maeropsis paphavasitae is characterized by it seven teeth on the palm of gnathopod 2 and Rotomelita longipropoda can be recognized by its long gnathopod 1 propodus. Their characters are described and illustrated. All specimens are deposited at Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand and the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin.

A new terrestrial talitrid genus, Myanmarorchestia, with two new species from Myanmar (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Talitridae).

Project description:Myanmarorchestia Hou, gen. n. with two new species is described from terrestrial habitats in Myanmar. This new genus is characterised by 4-dentate lacinia on left mandible, simple gnathopod I in both sexes, weakly chelate gnathopod II in male, simplidactylate pereopods and complex and lobed gills. Myanmarorchestia peterjaegeri Hou, sp. n. closely resembles M. seabri Hou, sp. n. in gnathopod II merus and carpus protuberant on posterior margin; however, the former is distinguished from the latter by palp of maxilla I with two articles, coxal gills convoluted, and telson with nicks on surface. Additionally, DNA barcodes of the new species are obtained to confirm their distinctiveness.
