ABSTRACT: Stomosisarachnophila Brake sp. n. (Diptera, Milichiidae) is described from Western Australia. The species is kleptoparasitic on araneid spiders. The paper is an example for a new approach in cybertaxonomy which includes generation of manuscripts within a Virtual Research Environment (Scratchpads), semantic enhancement, parallel release of the publication on paper and online accompanied with registration of new taxa with ZooBank.

Frit flies of Turkey with descriptions of two new species and new records (Diptera, Chloropidae).

Project description:Faunistic records for 88 frit flies species from southwestern Turkey (Mu?la province) and from Samsun (north Turkey) are given. Two species, Dicraeus civelekisp. n., and Meromyza samsunensissp. n., are described as new to science. Altogether, nine genera (Calamoncosis, Eribolus, Gaurax, Incertella, Speccafrons, Trachysiphonella, Chloropsina, Eutropha, and Lagaroceras) and 46 species are recorded for the first time from Turkey.

New genera of Australian stiletto flies (Diptera, Therevidae).

Project description:Two new stiletto fly genera of Agapophytinae (Diptera: Therevidae) are described from Australia. Sidarenagen. n. comprises six new species (Sidarena aurantiasp. n., Sidarena flavipalpasp. n., Sidarena geraldtonsp. n., Sidarena hortorumsp. n., Sidarena macfarlandisp. n., and Sidarena yallingupsp. n.) and is largely endemic to Western Australia. Zelothrix gen. n. is described based on two species; Zelothrix warrumbunglessp. n. is a locally abundant species in Eastern Australia, while Zelothrix yeatesisp. n. is restricted to southwestern Western Australia. These sister genera are likely closely related to Taenogerella Winterton & Irwin and Actenomeros Winterton & Irwin.

New <i>Metalimnobia</i> crane flies (Diptera, Limoniidae) from China with an update of species distributions.

Project description:Two new species of the genus Metalimnobia Matsumura, 1911 from southwest China, M. (M.) bicolorsp. nov. and M. (M.) caudifuscasp. nov., are described and illustrated. The new species can be distinguished from congeners by their wing patterns and male genitalia. New distributional data are given for the following species: M. (M.) bifasciata (Schrank, 1781), M. (M.) quadrinotata (Meigen, 1818) and M. (M.) tenua Savchenko, 1976. An updated key for all Chinese Metalimnobia crane flies is presented.

Aquatic dance flies (Diptera, Empididae, Clinocerinae and Hemerodromiinae) of Greece: species richness, distribution and description of five new species.

Project description:All records of aquatic dance flies (37 species in subfamily Clinocerinae and 10 species in subfamily Hemerodromiinae) from the territory of Greece are summarized, including previously unpublished data and data on five newly described species (Chelifera horvati Ivković & Sinclair, sp. n., Wiedemannia iphigeniae Ivković & Sinclair, sp. n., W. ljerkae Ivković & Sinclair, sp. n., W. nebulosa Ivković & Sinclair, sp. n. and W. pseudoberthelemyi Ivković & Sinclair, sp. n.). The new species are described and illustrated, the male terminalia of Clinocera megalatlantica (Vaillant) are illustrated and the distributions of all species within Greece are listed. The aquatic Empididae fauna of Greece consists of 47 species, with the following described species reported for the first time: Chelifera angusta Collin, Hemerodromia melangyna Collin, Clinocera megalatlantica, Kowarzia plectrum (Mik), Phaeobalia dimidiata (Loew), W. (Chamaedipsia) beckeri (Mik), W. (Philolutra) angelieri Vaillant and W. (P.) chvali Joost. A key to species of aquatic Empididae of Greece is provided for the first time. Information related to the European Ecoregions in which species were found is given. Compared to the other studied countries in the Balkans, the Greek species assemblage is most similar to that of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Project description:In the context of a major monitoring program of Culicoides in Denmark and Sweden due to the appearance of bluetongue disease in 2007-2008, a large number of specimens were collected by light traps and sorted morphologically, with COI barcodes generated for selected specimens.Three species are described as new to science based on both morphological and molecular data: Culicoides (Culicoides) boyi sp. nov. (Denmark: Jutland), C. (C.) selandicus sp. nov. (Denmark: Zealand) and C. (C.) kalix sp. nov. (Sweden: Norrbotten). All are diagnosed morphologically as well as by molecular barcoding. A key to slide-mounted females of all Scandinavian species of Culicoides (Culicoides) is presented.

Five species, Eurasimonastigma (Loew, 1840), Noeetabisetosa Merz, 1992, Campiglossadoronici (Loew, 1856), Xyphosialaticauda (Meigen, 1826) and Rhagoletisberberidis Jermy, 1961 are recorded from Italy for the first time, whereas four species, Inuromaesamaura (Frauenfeld, 1857), Urophoracuspidata (Meigen, 1826), Tephritisconyzifoliae Merz, 1992 and T.mutabilis Merz, 1992, previously recorded in the Fauna Europaea database without reference to collection material, are confirmed and supplemented with host plant data and other collection data.

New records of moth flies (Diptera, Psychodidae) for the Dutch Fauna.

Project description:BackgroundPrior to this study, the moth flies in The Netherlands were represented by 61 species. Our findings derive from a citizen-science expedition in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam, one of the oldest public parks and best known parks in The Netherlands. The combination of citizen science and the exploration of a well-known urban park has allowed us to contribute to the knowledge of moth fly species present in The Netherlands. The findings from this study provide valuable insights into the distribution, taxonomy and genetic resources of Psychoda and Panimerus species, enhancing our understanding of insect biodiversity and promoting future research in this field.New informationOur study provides two new geographical records of the moth flies in The Netherlands, namely, Psychodauniformata Haseman, 1907 and Panimerusmaynei (Tonnoir, 1920) elevating the total number of species to 63. Furthermore, we provide re-descriptions of the females of Panimerusnotabilis (Eaton, 1893) and P.goetghebueri (Tonnoir, 1919). Additionally, we make available for the first time, the sequence of the 5'-end of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene or COI Barcodes for Panimerusnotabilis, P.goetghebueri and P.maynei. These COI Barcodes serve as valuable tools for future species identification within the genus.
