Project description:In the crystal structure of the title salt, C(8)H(12)N(+)·C(2)F(3)O(2) (-), all of the ammonium H atoms serve as donors for hydrogen bonds to carboxyl-ate O atoms, forming an R(4) (3)(10) ring motif based on two cations and two anions. Since both cations and anions act as inter-ion bridging groups, R(10) rings aggregate in a one-dimensional supra-molecular network by sharing the strongest N-H?O bond. Edge-sharing motifs lie on the twofold screw axis parallel to [010], and anti-parallel packing of these 2(1)-column structural units results in the crystal structure. This arrangement is one of the most commonly occurring in conglomerates of chiral 1-phenyl-ethyl-amine with achiral monocarboxylic acids, confirming that these ionic salts are particularly robust supra-molecular heterosynthons useful in crystal engineering.

Project description:The title compounds benzyl-ammonium phenyl-acetate, C7H10N+·C8H7O2 - (1), and its monohydrate, C7H10N+·C8H7O2 -·H2O (2), can be obtained by evaporating methano-lic solutions containing equimolar amounts of benzyl-amine and phenyl-acetic acid in the absence and presence of water, respectively. N-H?O hydrogen bonds in the crystal structure of 1 lead to the formation of hydro-philic channels running along the b-axis direction. The hydrogen-bonding system is best described by fused R 3 4(10) ring patterns, often observed in ammonium carboxyl-ate salts. In 2, the presence of the crystal water leads to the formation of a two-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network. The benzyl moieties in 1 and 2 form hydro-phobic layers in the crystal structures with the aromatic rings adopting edge-to-face arrangements.

Project description:In the structure of the title hydrated salt, NH4 (+)·C8H5Cl2O3 (-)·0.5H2O, where the anion derives from (3,5-di-chloro-phen-oxy)acetic acid, the ammonium cation is involved in extensive N-H⋯O hydrogen bonding with both carboxyl-ate and ether O-atom acceptors giving sheet structures lying parallel to (100). The water mol-ecule of solvation lies on a crystallographic twofold rotation axis and is involved in intra-sheet O-H⋯Ocarboxyl-ate hydrogen-bonding inter-actions. In the anion, the oxoacetate side chain assumes an antiperiplanar conformation with the defining C-O-C-C torsion angle = -171.33 (15)°.

Project description:BackgroundCaenorhabditis elegans chemosensation has been successfully studied using behavioral assays that treat detection of volatile and water soluble chemicals as separate senses, analogous to smell and taste. However, considerable ambiguity has been associated with the attractive properties of the compound ammonium-acetate (NH(4)Ac). NH(4)Ac has been used in behavioral assays both as a chemosensory neutral compound and as an attractant.Methodology/main findingsHere we show that over a range of concentrations NH(4)Ac can be detected both as a water soluble attractant and as an odorant, and that ammonia and acetic acid individually act as olfactory attractants. We use genetic analysis to show that NaCl and NH(4)Ac sensation are mediated by separate pathways and that ammonium sensation depends on the cyclic nucleotide gated ion channel TAX-2/TAX-4, but acetate sensation does not. Furthermore we show that sodium-acetate (NaAc) and ammonium-chloride (NH(4)Cl) are not detected as Na(+) and Cl(-) specific stimuli, respectively.Conclusions/significanceThese findings clarify the behavioral response of C. elegans to NH(4)Ac. The results should have an impact on the design and interpretation of chemosensory experiments studying detection and adaptation to soluble compounds in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.

Project description:Ammonium acetate (0.24M) in combination with cold 66% (v/v) ethanol quantitatively precipitated RNA from very dilute solutions (greater than or equal to mug/ml) after centrifugation for 2.5 X 10(6)g-min. There was also less co-precipitation of detergents with ammonium acetate than NaCl.

In the crystal, the cations, anions and phosphoric triamide mol-ecules are linked via N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into a two-dimensional array parallel to the bc plane. The O atom of the P(O) group acts as a double-hydrogen-bond acceptor.
