The 4-diphosphocytidyl-2-C-methyl-D-erythritol kinase (IspE) from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, an enzyme from the 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway, is crucial and essential for the survival of this pathogenic bacterium. IspE catalyzes the conversion of 4-diphosphocytidyl-2-C-methyl-D-erythritol (CDP-ME) to 4-diphosphocytidyl-2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 2-phosphate (CDP-ME2P) in an ATP-dependent manner.
