A Three-Channel Spectrometer for Wide-Field Imaging of Anisotropic Plasmonic Nanoparticles.

ABSTRACT: A three-channel spectrometer (3CS) based on a commercial digital camera was developed to distinguish among tens of large (>100 nm), anisotropic plasmonic particles with various shapes, orientations, and compositions on a surface simultaneously. Using band pass filters and polarizers, the contrast of 3CS images could be enhanced to identify specific orientation and composition characteristics of gold and gold-silver nanopyramids and as well as the direction of the longest arm of gold nanostars.

Imaging-based intelligent spectrometer on a plasmonic rainbow chip.

Project description:Compact, lightweight, and on-chip spectrometers are required to develop portable and handheld sensing and analysis applications. However, the performance of these miniaturized systems is usually much lower than their benchtop laboratory counterparts due to oversimplified optical architectures. Here, we develop a compact plasmonic "rainbow" chip for rapid, accurate dual-functional spectroscopic sensing that can surpass conventional portable spectrometers under selected conditions. The nanostructure consists of one-dimensional or two-dimensional graded metallic gratings. By using a single image obtained by an ordinary camera, this compact system can accurately and precisely determine the spectroscopic and polarimetric information of the illumination spectrum. Assisted by suitably trained deep learning algorithms, we demonstrate the characterization of optical rotatory dispersion of glucose solutions at two-peak and three-peak narrowband illumination across the visible spectrum using just a single image. This system holds the potential for integration with smartphones and lab-on-a-chip systems to develop applications for in situ analysis.

Imaging through plasmonic nanoparticles.

Project description:The optical properties of metallic nanoparticles with plasmon resonances have been studied extensively, typically by measuring the transmission of light, as a function of wavelength, through a nanoparticle suspension. One question that has not yet been addressed, however, is how an image is transmitted through such a suspension of absorber-scatterers, in other words, how the various spatial frequencies are attenuated as they pass through the nanoparticle host medium. Here, we examine how the optical properties of a suspension of plasmonic nanoparticles affect the transmitted image. We use two distinct ways to assess transmitted image quality: the structural similarity index (SSIM), a perceptual distortion metric based on the human visual system, and the modulation transfer function (MTF), which assesses the resolvable spatial frequencies. We show that perceived image quality, as well as spatial resolution, are both dependent on the scattering and absorption cross-sections of the constituent nanoparticles. Surprisingly, we observe a nonlinear dependence of image quality on optical density by varying optical path length and nanoparticle concentration. This work is a first step toward understanding the requirements for visualizing and resolving objects through media consisting of subwavelength absorber-scatterer structures, an approach that should also prove useful in the assessment of metamaterial or metasurface-based optical imaging systems.

Ultrafast strong-field photoemission from plasmonic nanoparticles.

Project description:We demonstrate the ultrafast generation of electrons from tailored metallic nanoparticles and unravel the role of plasmonic field enhancement in this process by comparing resonant and off-resonant particles, as well as different particle geometries. We find that electrons become strongly accelerated within the evanescent fields of the plasmonic nanoparticles and escape along straight trajectories with orientations governed by the particle geometry. These results establish plasmonic nanoparticles as versatile ultrafast, nanoscopic sources of electrons.

Anisotropic Self-Assembly of Supramolecular Polymers and Plasmonic Nanoparticles at the Liquid-Liquid Interface.

Project description:The study of supramolecular polymers in the bulk, in diluted solution, and at the solid-liquid interface has recently become a major topic of interest, going from fundamental aspects to applications in materials science. However, examples of supramolecular polymers at the liquid-liquid interface are mostly unexplored. Here, we describe the supramolecular polymerization of triarylamine molecules and their light-triggered organization at a chloroform-water interface. The resulting interfacial nematic layer of these 1D supramolecular polymers is further used as a template for the precise alignment of spherical gold nanoparticles coming from the water phase. These hybrid thin films are spontaneously formed in a single process, without chemical prefunctionalization of the metallic nanoparticles, and their ordering is improved by centrifugation. The resulting polymer chains and strings of nanoparticles can be co-aligned with high anisotropy over very large distances. By using a combination of experimental and theoretical investigations, we decipher the full sequence of this oriented self-assembly process. In such a highly anisotropic configuration, electron energy loss spectroscopy reveals that the self-assembled nanoparticles behave as plasmonic waveguides.

Quantifying Shape Transition in Anisotropic Plasmonic Nanoparticles through Geometric Inversion. Application to Gold Bipyramids.

Project description:Unraveling the nuanced interplay between the morphology and the optical properties of plasmonic nanoparticles is crucial for targeted applications. Managing the relationship becomes significantly complex when dealing with anisotropic nanoparticles that defy a simple description using parameters like length, width, or aspect ratio. This complexity requires computationally intensive numerical modeling and advanced imaging techniques. To address these challenges, we propose a detailed structural parameter determination of gold nanoparticles using their two-dimensional projections (e.g., micrographs). Employing gold bipyramids (AuBPs) as a model morphology, we can determine their three-dimensional geometry and extract optical features computationally for comparison with the experimental data. To validate our inversion model's effectiveness, we apply it to derive the structural parameters of AuBPs undergoing shape modification through oxidative etching. In summary, our findings allow for the precise characterization of structural parameters for plasmonic nanoparticles during shape transitions, potentially enhancing the comprehension of nanocrystal growth and optimizing plasmonic material design for various applications.

Anisotropic field-of-view support for golden angle radial imaging.

Project description:To provide anisotropic field-of-view (FOV) support for golden angle radial imaging.In radial imaging, uniform spoke density leads to a circular FOV, which is excessive for objects with anisotropic dimensions. Larson et al previously showed that the angular k-space spoke density can be determined by the desired anisotropic FOV. We show that conventional golden angle sampling can be deployed in an angle-normalized space and transformed back to k-space such that the desired nonuniform spoke density is preserved for arbitrary temporal window length. Elliptical FOVs were used to illustrate this generalized mapping approach. Point-spread-function and spoke density analysis was performed. Phantom and in vivo cardiac images were acquired.Simulations, phantom, and in vivo experiments confirmed that the proposed method is able to achieve anisotropic FOV while still maintaining the benefits of golden angle sampling. This approach requires 50% less spokes for elliptical FOV with major-to-minor-axis ratio of 1:0.3, when compared with isotropic FOV with the same undersampling factor.We demonstrate a simple method for applying golden angle view ordering to anisotropic FOV radial imaging. Wide-Field Three-Dimensional Depth-Invariant Cellular-Resolution Imaging of the Human Retina.

Project description:Three-dimensional (3D) cellular-resolution imaging of the living human retina over a large field of view will bring a great impact in clinical ophthalmology, potentially finding new biomarkers for early diagnosis and improving the pathophysiological understanding of ocular diseases. While hardware-based and computational adaptive optics (AO) optical coherence tomography (OCT) have been developed to achieve cellular-resolution retinal imaging, these approaches support limited 3D imaging fields, and their high cost and intrinsic hardware complexity limit their practical utility. Here, this work demonstrates 3D depth-invariant cellular-resolution imaging of the living human retina over a 3 × 3 mm field of view using the first intrinsically phase-stable multi-MHz retinal swept-source OCT and novel computational defocus and aberration correction methods. Single-acquisition imaging of photoreceptor cells, retinal nerve fiber layer, and retinal capillaries is presented across unprecedented imaging fields. By providing wide-field 3D cellular-resolution imaging in the human retina using a standard point-scan architecture routinely used in the clinic, this platform proposes a strategy for expanded utilization of high-resolution retinal imaging in both research and clinical settings.

Anisotropic dual-plasmonic hetero-nanostructures with tunable plasmonic coupling effects.

Project description:The influence of plasmonic coupling effects between different components in Au NRs@Cu2-x Se nanostructures on their characteristics was studied. To this aim, anisotropic Au@Cu2-x Se hetero-nanostructures with well-controlled design and optical properties were obtained. The LSPR bands of gold and copper selenide are superpositioned in the NIR region, resulting in superior photocatalytic properties of the nanostructures.

Dark Field and Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman (DF-CARS) Imaging of Cell Uptake of Core-Shell, Magnetic-Plasmonic Nanoparticles.

Project description:Magnetic-plasmonic, Fe3O4-Au, core-shell nanoparticles are popular in many applications, most notably in therapeutics and diagnostics, and thus, the imaging of these nanostructures in biological samples is of high importance. These nanostructures are typically imaged in biological material by dark field scatter imaging, which requires an even distribution of nanostructures in the sample and, therefore, high nanoparticle doses, potentially leading to toxicology issues. Herein, we explore the nonlinear optical properties of magnetic nanoparticles coated with various thicknesses of gold using the open aperture z-scan technique to determine the nonlinear optical properties and moreover, predict the efficacy of the nanostructures in nonlinear imaging. We find that the magnetic nanoparticles coated with gold nanoseeds and thinner gold shells (ca. 4 nm) show the largest nonlinear absorption coefficient β and imaginary part of the third-order susceptibility Im χ(3), suggesting that these nanostructures would be suitable contrast agents. Next, we combine laser dark field microscopy and epi-detected coherent anti-Stokes Raman (CARS) microscopy to image the uptake of magnetic-plasmonic nanoparticles in human pancreatic cancer cells. We show the epi-detected CARS technique is suitable for imaging of the magnetic-plasmonic nanoparticles without requiring a dense distribution of nanoparticles. This technique achieves superior nanoparticle contrasting over both epi-detected backscatter imaging and transmission dark field imaging, while also attaining label-free chemical contrasting of the cell. Lastly, we show the high biocompatibility of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles with ca. 4-nm thick Au shell at concentrations of 10-100 µg/mL.

Broadband and wide field-of-view plasmonic metasurface-enabled waveplates.

Project description:Quasi two-dimensional metasurfaces composed of subwavelength nanoresonator arrays can dramatically alter the properties of light in an ultra-thin planar geometry, enabling new optical functions such as anomalous reflection and refraction, polarization filtering, and wavefront modulation. However, previous metasurface-based nanostructures suffer from low efficiency, narrow bandwidth and/or limited field-of-view due to their operation near the plasmonic resonance. Here we demonstrate plasmonic metasurface-based nanostructures for high-efficiency, angle-insensitive polarization transformation over a broad octave-spanning bandwidth. The structures are realized by optimizing the anisotropic response of an array of strongly coupled nanorod resonators to tailor the interference of light at the subwavelength scale. Nanofabricated reflective half-wave and quarter-wave plates designed using this approach have measured polarization conversion ratios and reflection magnitudes greater than 92% over a broad wavelength range from 640 to 1290 nm and a wide field-of-view up to ± 40°. This work outlines a versatile strategy to create metasurface-based photonics with diverse optical functionalities.
