A reassessment of Marquesan Ochrosia and Rauvolfia (Apocynaceae) with two new combinations.

ABSTRACT: A reassessment of collections of Marquesan Apocynaceae assigned to the genera Neisosperma Raf., Ochrosia Juss., and Rauvolfia L. revealed that two nomenclatural changes are necessary: 1) transfer of Neisosperma brownii Fosberg & Sachet to the genus Ochrosia, as Ochrosia brownii (Fosberg & Sachet) Lorence & Butaud, comb. nov., and 2) transfer of Ochrosia nukuhivensis Fosberg & Sachet to Rauvolfia as Rauvolfia nukuhivensis (Fosberg & Sachet) Lorence & Butaud, comb. nov. As a result, two species each of Ochrosia and Rauvolfia are recognized from the Marquesas Islands, all endemic. Recent field work has yielded important new data on their distribution, habitat, and conservation status. It is recommended that all four species should be added the IUCN Red List at the Critically Endangered (CR) category.

Project description:Rauvolfia verticillata is a medical plant (Apocynaceae) widely distributed from India to China, the Indo-China Peninsula, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The first complete plastid genome sequence of the species reported here was 155,856?bp in length, with the large single-copy (LSC) region of 86,085?bp, the small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,299?bp, and two inverted repeats (IRa and IRb) of 25,736?bp. The plastome contained 113 unique genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 4 ribosomal RNA genes, and 30 transfer RNA genes. The overall GC content was 37.92%. The result from phylogenetic analysis suggests that Rauvolfia is closely related to the genus Catharanthus.

Two new species of Hoya R.Br. (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) from Borneo.

Project description:Two new Hoya R.Br. species from Borneo are described and illustrated. The first, Hoyaruthiae Rodda was collected in Sabah on Bukit Baturong, a limestone outcrop. It is one of the few species in the genus to have clear exudate. It is compared with the morphologically related Hoyauncinata Teijsm. and Binn. The other, Hoyabakoensis Rodda, was collected in the kerangas forests of Bako National Park. It belongs to HoyasectionAcanthostemma (Bl.) Kloppenb., a section with numerous members in the Philippines but under-represented in Borneo.

A taxonomic revision of Cynanchumthesioides (Apocynaceae) with two new synonyms.

Project description:Cynanchumthesioides, a species widely distributed in north-eastern Asia, is revised to include two new synonyms: Vincetoxicumsibiricumf.linearifolium, described from Shandong, China in 1877, but long neglected and Cynanchumgobicum, previously believed to be endemic to Mongolia. Typification for C.thesioides and all its synonyms is given, including lectotypification of V.sibiricumvar.australe and V.sibiricumf.linearifolium. An updated description, three figures showing the diverse habitats, habits and variation in morphological characters, and a general distribution map are also provided.

Three new indole alkaloids from Rauvolfia yunnanensis

Project description:One rare tetracyclic macroline-type indole alkaloid, named rauvoyunine A (1), and two new picraline-type alkaloids rauvoyunines B and C (2 and 3) were isolated from the aerial parts of Rauvolfia yunnanensis. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 2 and 3 were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity against five human tumor cell lines. Two new Erythrophylloporus species (Boletaceae) from Thailand, with two new combinations of American species.

Project description:Erythrophylloporus is a lamellate genus in the family Boletaceae that has been recently described from China based on E.cinnabarinus, the only known species. Typical characters of Erythrophylloporus are reddish-orange to yellowish-red basidiomata, including lamellae, bright yellow basal mycelium and smooth, broadly ellipsoid, ellipsoid to nearly ovoid basidiospores. During our survey on diversity of Boletaceae in Thailand, several yellowish-orange to reddish- or brownish-orange lamellate boletes were collected. Based on both morphological evidence and molecular analyses of a four-gene dataset (atp6, tef1, rpb2 and cox3), they were recognised as belonging in Erythrophylloporus and different from the already known species. Two new species, E.paucicarpus and E.suthepensis are therefore introduced from Thailand with detailed descriptions and illustrations. Moreover, two previously described Phylloporus species, P.aurantiacus and P.fagicola, were also revised and recombined in Erythrophylloporus. A key to all known Erythrophylloporus species is provided.

A new species and two new combinations of Monolophus (Zingiberaceae) from Indo-Burma.

Project description:Monolophus odontochilus Y.H.Tan & H.B.Ding, a new species from Northern Myanmar, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to M. linearis, but differs by having elliptic to oblong leaves (vs. linear-lanceolate to lanceolate), bilobed ligules (vs. entire), purely white corolla (vs. pinkish white), semi-orbicular crenate labellum (vs. trilobed). In addition, a diagnostic key to the new species of Monolophus and its closely related non-yellow flowered species is provided. New combinations are proposed here for Caulokaempferia phokhamii Picheans. & Douangde. and C. wongsuwaniae Picheans. & Douangde. from Laos.

Project description:Jasminanthes xuanlienensis (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae), a new species from Vietnam is described, illustrated and compared with its five congeners. Jasminanthes xuanlienensis differs distinctly from congeners by the longer peduncles (14-18 cm vs. 4 cm at most in Jasminanthes pilosa and Jasminanthes saxatilis, salmon-pink color of the inner corolla lobes (white or greenish in the other species), and corolla tube length (12.0-14.5 mm vs. shorter or longer in congeners).

Two new combinations, lectotypifications and a new name for Costa Rican Palicourea s.l.

Project description:Species of the complex and diverse genera Psychotria and Palicourea are common but little-known elements in many tropical forest ecosystems. DNA-phylogenetic studies and a re-evaluation of morphological characters have recently shown that species of Psychotria subg. Heteropsychotria are nested within Palicourea s.l., which was traditionally separated by exhibiting a bird-pollinated (vs. insect-pollinated) pollination syndrome. In order to render both genera monophyletic groups, species of subg. Heteropsychotria need to be transferred to Palicourea s.l. For Central American species, most of the necessary combinations have already been made. In the course of ongoing research on the phytochemical characterization of species and clades of Costa Rican Palicourea s.l., the nomenclature of Mesoamerican species was revised. As a result, two new combinations and a new name are proposed here: Palicourea horquetensis (Dwyer & Hayden) A. C. Berger & C. M. Taylor is based on Rudgea horquetensis Dwyer & Hayden, Palicourea tonduzii (K. Krause) A. C. Berger is based on Cephaelis tonduzii K. Kraus and Palicourea longiinvolucrata A. C. Berger replaces Psychotria hispidula Standl. In addition, two lectotypes are designated.
