A new genus Squamophis of Asteroschematidae (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea, Euryalida) from Australia.

ABSTRACT: Squamophis, a new genus of brittle star is described. Two species are included in the genus: Squamophis amamiensis (Okanishi & Fujita, 2009) from south-western Japan and Squamophis albozosteressp. n. from north-western Australia. Squamophisgen. n. is distinguished from the other genera of the family Asteroschematidae by the following characters: each radial shield is single-layered and is completely covered by plate-shaped epidermal ossicles, and the relative length of the longest arm spine throughout the arms is as long as the length of the corresponding arm segment. Squamophis albozosteressp. n. is distinguished from Squamophis amamiensis in having white, slightly domed, plate-shaped epidermal ossicles on the aboral side of the body, the ossicles on aboral and lateral portion of the arms form transverse rows, and the other part of aboral side of disc and basal to middle portion of arms are brown but tip of the arms are light purple.

A taxonomic review of the genus Astrocladus (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea, Euryalida, Gorgonocephalidae) from Japanese coastal waters.

Project description:Japanese species of the genus Astrocladus (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea, Euryalida, Gorgonocephalidae) are reviewed. Astrocladus coniferus recently has two junior synonyms, A. dofleini Döderlein and A. pardalis Döderlein, however, status of these species has long been questioned. These species concepts have not been reviewed in recent years and no molecular phylogenetic analyses have been performed. Observations of the lectotype of A. coniferus, as well as the lectotype and four paralectotypes of A. dofleini and the holotype of A. pardalis have revealed that A. coniferus and A. pardalis are conspecific and morphologically distinguishable from A. dofleini. Astrocladus coniferus and A. dofleini are supported as distinct species by our molecular data. Additionally, we re-describe A. exiguus and A. annulatus, based on recently collected specimens and the holotype. We conclude that four species, A. annulatus, A. coniferus, A. dofleini, and A. exiguus are present in Japanese waters.

Unravelling the origin of the basket stars and their allies (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea, Euryalida).

Project description:Euryalids, which include the spectacular basket stars, form a morphologically aberrant group of brittle stars. Surprisingly, the most recent molecular work found them to be sister to ophiurid brittle stars, thus challenging the traditional dichotomy between euryalids and non-euryalids, and leaving an enormous ghost lineage of more than 100 million years between the oldest unambiguous euryalid fossils and their predicted divergence from ophiurids during the Triassic. Here we examine both previously known and newly collected fossils to explore the evolutionary history of euryalids. A morphology-based phylogenetic estimate confirms the Triassic Aspiduriella as a basal member of the euryalid clade that superficially resembles members of the living ophiurid sister clades. Furthermore, we use lateral arm plates and vertebrae to identify two new Jurassic ophiuroids, Melusinaster alissawhitegluzae and Melusinaster arcusinimicus, as early euryalids that are morphologically intermediate between Aspiduriella and extant euryalids. Our phylogenetic analysis is the first to combine data from completely preserved skeletons and from microfossils in order to bridge morphological and stratigraphical gaps between the sampled taxa. It fills a major gap in the fossil record of euryalids and sets a robust phylogenetic framework to understand the morphological transition from ophiurid-like ancestors to the typical modern euryalids better.

Order Euryalida (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea), new species and new records from the South China Sea and the Northwest Pacific seamounts.

Project description:Ophiuroids were collected by the manned submersible 'Shenhaiyongshi' from the deep-sea seamounts in the South China Sea and Northwest Pacific regions at 602-1920 m depth, during 2018 to 2020. A total of nine species was identified, including two new species and seven new records from the South China Sea and one new record from the Northwest Pacific region. Two new species are described as Asteroschemashenhaiyongshii sp. nov. and Asteroschemadomogranulatum sp. nov. The seven new records included five species from the genus Asteroschema, and one species each from the genera Asterostegus and Astrodendrum. Comprehensive descriptions of morphological features are provided, including characteristics of the arm skeleton, as well as a phylogenetic analysis based on 16S and COI sequences. Intraspecific genetic distance ranges of Euryalida species from the present study were 0.34% to 1.38%, which was relatively low compared to other orders in the class Ophiuroidea. The present study suggests a high probability that species of the order Euryalida are more widely spread around the Indo-Pacific region than previously expected.

Non-destructive morphological observations of the fleshy brittle star, Asteronyx loveni using micro-computed tomography (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea, Euryalida).

Project description:The first morphological observation of a euryalid brittle star, Asteronyx loveni, using non-destructive X-ray micro-computed tomography (µCT) was performed. The body of euryalids is covered by thick skin, and it is very difficult to observe the ossicles without dissolving the skin. Computed tomography with micrometer resolution (approximately 4.5-15.4 µm) was used to construct 3D images of skeletal ossicles and soft tissues in the ophiuroid's body. Shape and positional arrangement of taxonomically important ossicles were clearly observed without any damage to the body. Detailed pathways inside the vertebral ossicles, lateral arm plates, and arm spines for passage of nerves and water vascular structures were observed. Inter-vertebral muscles were also observed. Forms and 3D arrangements of many important taxonomical characters of the euryalids were scrutinized by µCT in high enough resolution for taxonomic description of ophiuroids.

A New Species of the Genus Ophiomonas Djakonov (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea: Amphilepididae) from the Deep-Sea of Japan.

Project description:A new species, Ophiomonas shinseimaruae, is described based on five specimens collected from deep water settings, southeast of Cape Erimo, Hokkaido, Japan. Ophiomonas shinseimaruae sp. n. is distinguished from other congeners based on the following characters: elongate semi-circular and separated radial shields; triangular oral shields; flat and broad tentacle scales on the second tentacle pore; octagonal dorsal arm plates, approximately three times wider than long on proximal portion of the arm; and three arm spines present proximally on the arm. This is the first record of the genus Ophiomonas from Japanese waters. The COI nucleotide sequence for Ophiomonas shinseimaruae sp. n. is provided.

Description of two species of the genus Astrodia Verrill, 1899 (Ophiuroidea, Euryalida, Asteronychidae), including a new species from seamounts in the West Pacific.

Project description:Five specimens of Ophiuroidea from deep-sea seamounts in the West Pacific were collected and identified as two species, Astrodiaduospina sp. nov. and Astrodiaabyssicola. The new species, Astrodiaduospina sp. nov., can be distinguished from its congeners by having indistinct or underdeveloped oral papillae, relatively short genital slits, crescent-shaped lateral arm plates, and plate-shaped external ossicles on the aboral surface of the disc. One specimen was identified as Astrodiaabyssicola, which has been reported in the north-western Pacific and the north-eastern coast of Japan. The most recent tabular key of Astrodia was revised with two more key characteristics added, the shape and presence of oral papillae and the number of arm spines. The phylogenetic relationship of Astrodia and Asteronyx was analyzed based on 16S and COI sequences. The discovery of the two species further expanded the geographical distribution of the genus Astrodia.

Project description:Ophioderma peruana sp. n. is a new species of Ophiodermatidae, extending the distribution of the genus Ophioderma to Lobos de Afuera Island, Peru, easily distinguishable from its congeners by its peculiarly fragmented dorsal arm plates. Dense granules, rounded or polygonal cover the disc, the radial shields may be naked or completely covered by granules. A good character for recognizing this species in the field is the dorsal side of the disc which is brown with disc granules lighter cream and brown, the arms are mottled with whitish spots and the ventral part of the disc on the interradial part is brown and the radial part bright yellow.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Asteroschema tubiferum (Ophiuroidea: Euryalida: Asteroschematidae).

Project description:We describe the first mitochondrial genome of a brittle star Asteroschema tubiferum Matsumoto 1911 in family Asteroschematidae. The mitogenome was sequenced and assembled using next-generation sequencing technology, and were 16,361 bp in size with 37 genes containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and a control region. The phylogenetic tree was constructed based on 13 protein-coding mitochondrial genes of A. tubiferum and 26 species in the phylum Echinodermata by RAxML, which showed that it was mostly related to the species in Family Gorgonocephalidae. These results could provide a novel insight to the phylogeny of Ophiuroidea.

Ophiuroidea (Echinodermata) from coral reefs in the Mexican Pacific.

Project description:There are numerous and important coral reefs in the Mexican Pacific, but scarce studies of brittle stars conducted in these ecosystems. In this regard, this work provides the first annotated checklist of brittle stars associated with coral communities and reefs in the Mexican Pacific and an illustrated key to identify the species. We also provide taxonomic descriptions, spatial and bathymetric distributions and some important remarks of the species. We report a total of 14 species of brittle stars belonging to nine genera and seven families. Ophiocnida hispida in Jalisco, Ophiophragmus papillatus in Guerrero, and Ophiothrix (Ophiothrix) spiculata and Ophiactis simplex in Colima are new distribution records. The record of O. papillatus is remarkable because the species has not been reported since its description in 1940. The brittle stars collected in this study, represent 22.2% of the total species previously reported from the Mexican Pacific. Presently, anthropogenic activities on the coral reefs of the Mexican Pacific have increased, thus the biodiversity of brittle stars in these ecosystems may be threatened.

A New Fissiparous Brittle Star, Ophiacantha scissionis sp. nov. (Echinodermata, Ophiuroidea, Ophiacanthida), from Jeju Island, Korea.

Project description:A new species of Ophiuroidea, Ophiacantha scissionis sp. nov., is described. It was collected from Munseom Island, Jeju-do, South Korea at a depth of 28-36 m, by SCUBA diving. Ophiacantha scissionis has unique and distinct morphological characteristics: small disk, densely covered by small trifid spines, radial shields completely concealed by disk spines, six arms with four arm spines proximally, fissiparous. In addition, this species is clearly distinguished from other species of Ophiacantha by mitochondrial COI. This species is usually hexamerous and reproduces asexually by fissiparity. It is the first report of fissiparous reproduction in the genus Ophiacantha.
