Comparison of wipe materials and wetting agents for pesticide residue collection from hard surfaces.

ABSTRACT: Different wipe materials and wetting agents have been used to collect pesticide residues from surfaces, but little is known about their comparability. To inform the selection of a wipe for the National Children's Study, the analytical feasibility, collection efficiency, and precision of Twillwipes wetted with isopropanol (TI), Ghost Wipes (GW), and Twillwipes wetted with water (TW), were evaluated. Wipe samples were collected from stainless steel surfaces spiked with high and low concentrations of 27 insecticides, including organochlorines, organophosphates, and pyrethroids. Samples were analyzed by GC/MS/SIM. No analytical interferences were observed for any of the wipes. The mean percent collection efficiencies across all pesticides for the TI, GW, and TW were 69.3%, 31.1%, and 10.3% at the high concentration, respectively, and 55.6%, 22.5%, and 6.9% at the low concentration, respectively. The collection efficiencies of the TI were significantly greater than that of GW or TW (p<0.0001). Collection efficiency also differed significantly by pesticide (p<0.0001) and spike concentration (p<0.0001). The pooled coefficients of variation (CVs) of the collection efficiencies for the TI, GW, and TW at high concentration were 0.08, 0.17, and 0.24, respectively. The pooled CV of the collection efficiencies for the TI, GW, and TW at low concentration were 0.15, 0.19, and 0.36, respectively. The TI had significantly lower CVs than either of the other two wipes (p=0.0008). Though the TI was superior in terms of both accuracy and precision, it requires multiple preparation steps, which could lead to operational challenges in a large-scale study.

Project description:Fruit tree leaves have different chemical compositions and diverse wax layer structures that result in different patterns of wetting and pesticide solution spreading on their surface. Fruit development is a time when pests and diseases occur, during which a large number of pesticides are needed. The wetting and diffusion properties of pesticide droplets on fruit tree leaves were relatively poor. To solve this problem, the wetting characteristics of leaf surfaces with different surfactants were studied. The contact angle, surface tension, adhesive tension, adhesion work, and solid-liquid interfacial tension of five surfactant solution droplets on jujube leaf surfaces during fruit growth were studied by the sessile drop method. C12E5 and Triton X-100 have the best wetting effects. Two surfactants were added to a 3% beta-cyfluthrin emulsion in water, and field efficacy tests were carried out on peach fruit moths in a jujube orchard at different dilutions. The control effect is as high as 90%. During the initial stage when the concentration is low, due to the surface roughness of the leaves, the surfactant molecules adsorbed at the gas-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces reach an equilibrium, and the contact angle on the leaf surface changes slightly. With increasing surfactant concentration, the pinning effect in the spatial structure on the leaf surface is overcome by liquid droplets, thereby significantly decreasing the contact angle. When the concentration is further increased, the surfactant molecules form a saturated adsorption layer on the leaf surface. Due to the existence of a precursor water film in the droplets, surfactant molecules on the interface continuously move to the water film on the surface of jujube tree leaves, thus causing interactions between the droplets and the leaves. The conclusion of this study provides theoretical guidance for the wettability and adhesion of pesticides on jujube leaves, so as to achieve the purpose of reducing pesticide use and improving pesticide efficacy.

Project description:Pesticide misuse incidents are reported worldwide each year. The potential exposure to pesticides creates a concern for occupants in affected homes, apartments, and other occupied buildings. Pesticides that are improperly applied within these locations may require remediation prior to reoccupation. Incident response personnel rely heavily on data from sampling results to identify residue levels and determine when site remediation is complete. Surface wipe samples are often collected for this purpose. Therefore, it is important to ensure sampling and analysis procedures are well established for the contaminants of concern, particularly for wipe sampling variables that can affect analysis results. This investigation evaluated the effects of surface wipe media, wipe wetting solvents, pesticide concentrations effects, composite sampling, surface types, and pesticide formulation effects on analysis results for fipronil, permethrin, and deltamethrin. Tested surface types included galvanized steel, vinyl tile, and plywood. Wipe media included pre-packaged, sterile cotton gauze, pre-cleaned cotton twill, and a pre-packaged, pre-wetted wipes. Surface recovery results are reported for commercially available fipronil formulations and compared to technical grade fipronil solutions. Fipronil recoveries were 92-107 % for twill wipes, 81-98 % for cotton gauze wipes, and 79 % for pre-packaged, pre-wetted wipes on a galvanized steel surface. Permethrin recoveries were 83-116 % for twill wipes, 66-94 % for cotton gauze wipes, and 73 % for pre-packaged, pre-wetted wipes on a galvanized steel surface. Deltamethrin recoveries were 67-88 % for twill wipes, 55-71 % for cotton gauze wipes, and 63 % for pre-packaged, pre-wetted wipes on a galvanized steel surface. The data collected in this study can inform surface wipe sampling methods and potentially assist in obtaining more accurate sampling data associated with pesticide misuse incidents involving the target analytes.
