The physical therapy profile questionnaire (PTPQ): development, validation and pilot testing.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Country by country similarities and differences in physical therapy practice exists. Therefore, before updates in practice can be provided, such as trainings in evidence-based practice, it is necessary to identify the profile and nature of practice in a given country or setting. Following a search of the international literature, no appropriate tool was identified to collect and establish data to create the profile of physical therapy practice in the Philippines. We therefore developed, validated and pilot tested a survey instrument which would comprehensively describe the practice of physical therapy in the Philippines

Findings

We used a mixed methods design to answer our study aims. A focus group interview was conducted among a group of physical therapists to establish the content and contexts of items to be included in the survey instrument. Findings were amalgamated with the information from the literature on developing survey instruments/questionnaires. A survey instrument was drafted and named as the Physical Therapy Profile Questionnaire (PTPQ). The PTPQ was then validated and pilot tested to a different group of physical therapists.The final version consisted of five separate parts namely (A) General information and demographics, (B) Practice Profile, (C) Treatment Preferences, (D) Bases for clinical work and (E) Bases for educational/research work. At present the PTPQ is relevant to the Philippines and could be used by any country which has a similar nature of practice with the Philippines.

Conclusion

The Physical Therapy Practice Questionnaire (PTPQ) was shown to have good face and content validity among the Filipino physical therapists and their context of practice. It has also been found to be useful, easy to administer tool and in a format appealing to respondents. The PTPQ is expected to assist comprehensive data collection to create a profile of physical therapy practice in the Philippines.

Project description:BackgroundThe Portuguese Physical Literacy Assessment (PPLA) is a novel tool to assess high-school students' (grade 10-12; 15-18 years) Physical Literacy (PL) in Physical Education (PE); inspired by the four domains of the Australian Physical Literacy Framework (APLF), and the Portuguese PE syllabus. This paper describes the development, content validation, and pilot testing of the PPLA-Questionnaire (PPLA-Q), one of two instruments in the PPLA, comprised of modules to assess the psychological, social, and part of the cognitive domain of PL.MethodsDevelopment was supported by previous work, analysis of the APLF, and literature review. We iteratively gathered evidence on content validity through two rounds of qualitative and quantitative expert validation (n = 11); three rounds of cognitive interviews with high-school students (n = 12); and multiple instances of expert advisor input. A pilot study in two grade 10 classes (n = 41) assessed feasibility, preliminary reliability, item difficulty and discrimination.ResultsInitial versions of the PPLA-Q gathered evidence in favor of adequate content validity at item level: most items had an Item-Content Validity Index ≥.78 and Cohen's κ ≥ .76. At module-level, S-CVI/Ave and UA were .87/.60, .98/.93 and .96/.84 for the cognitive, psychological, and social modules, respectively. Through the pilot study, we found evidence for feasibility, preliminary subscale and item reliability, difficulty, and discrimination. Items were reviewed through qualitative methods until saturation. Current PPLA-Q consists of 3 modules: cognitive (knowledge test with 10 items), psychological (46 Likert-type items) and social (43 Likert-type items).ConclusionResults of this study provide evidence for content validity, feasibility within PE setting and preliminary reliability of the PPLA-Q as an instrument to assess the psychological, social, and part of the cognitive domain of PL in grade 10 to 12 adolescents. Further validation and development are needed to establish construct validity and reliability, and study PPLA-Q's integration with the PPLA-Observation (an instrument in development to assess the remaining domains of PL) within the PPLA framework.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Evidence-based practice (EBP) education or training are considered fundamental to building and strengthening an EBP culture, as well as to encouraging evidence-based academic and clinical practice in the nursing community. However, few valid and reliable instruments are available for the assessment of EBP teaching and learning in clinical nurses in China. Translation, reliability, and validity testing of the English Evidence-Based Practice Profile Questionnaire (EBP2Q), which has strong psychometric properties, may encourage evaluation and promote the implementation of EBP in Mainland China. METHODS:Based on established guidelines for the development of questionnaires, the English EBP2Q was translated and cross-culturally adapted. The Chinese version of the EBP2Q (EBP2Q-C) was validated using a sample of 543 nurses. Structural validity was evaluated through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, and the questionnaire was tested for convergent and criterion validity. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability were also evaluated. RESULTS:The content validity index demonstrated good content validity (?0.98). An eight-factor structure was obtained in the exploratory factor analysis, and verified by a three-order factor model from the confirmatory factor analysis (?2/df?=?2.001; RMSEA?=?0.065; SRMR?=?0.077; and CFI?=?0.884). The Spearman's rank correlation analysis of the EBP2Q-C with the Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire showed moderate correlations for Practice (0.58) and Confidence (0.68) and a low correlation for Sympathy (0.32). Criterion validity was demonstrated by significant differences in terms of nurses' highest education, present position, EBP training, involvement in research programs, and level of understanding of English. Both the overall Cronbach's ? and the Cronbach's ? for the domains exceeded 0.70. The intraclass correlation coefficients for the domains ranged between 0.75 and 0.96, indicating satisfactory repeatability. CONCLUSIONS:Except for the convergent validity of the Sympathy domain, the EBP2Q-C provided evidence of validity and reliability. Therefore, it can be applied in EBP education or training assessment in Mainland China.

Project description:ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to develop a multifactorial, self-report questionnaire: Prevent for Work Questionnaire (P4Wq). The questionnaire is intended for screening for risk factors in work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs).DesignData were collected from otherwise healthy workers employed in three service areas at a specialist hospital in Italy: healthcare, administration and ancillary services.Setting and participantsIn all, 115 participants were enrolled (67% women; average age 41.5±9.94 years). The content of the tool for WMSDs was derived from three participation rounds of analysis involving a select group of experts who identified the questionnaire domains and items. Participants responded to 89 items in addition to the EuroQol 5 Dimensions Questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L), Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABq) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). The proportion of missing data and the distribution of responses were analysed for each item. Items with a discrimination index >0.40 and an interitem correlation <0.80 were retained. Factor analysis was performed using the VARIMAX rotation method, factor extraction, and identification, assignment of items to subscales, and assignment of scores to items. Internal consistency, reliability, construct validity and face validity were also assessed.ResultsA total of 52 items were included in the factor analysis and four subscales identified: Physical Stress Subscore (six items); Mental Stress Subscore (six items); Job Satisfaction Subscore (four items) and Kinesiophobia/Catastrophizing Subscore (four items). The items in the final questionnaire version had a factor loading >0.7. The questionnaire consisted of 20 items with good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.81-0.91), reliability (weighted kappa coefficient 0.617-1.00), good construct validity (EQ-5D-5L, r=-0.549, p<0.001; ODI, r=0.549, p<0.001; FABq work, r=0.688, p<0.001) and satisfactory face validity (universal validity index 96.04%).ConclusionThe P4Wq is a 20-item, multifactorial self-report risk assessment questionnaire. It may provide a useful tool for screening for WMSDs by specifically addressing back disorders. It investigates risks for individual workers and may inform educational programmes and preventive strategies tailored to a worker's needs.Trial registration numberNCT04192604.
